CRAFTY CINEMA: Rango-inspired vase

In Rango, the title character finds himself suddenly transported from the confines of a glass terrarium to the dust-laden Old Western town of Dirt. This charismatic chameleon puts on a brave face, designates himself the local sheriff and discovers along the way it’s up to him to save the day! You can celebrate this reptilian hero by designing your own Rango-inspired vase using the Duncan® Oh Four® mushroom canister. Paint your desert backdrop and friendly lizard with Concepts® Underglazes so he’ll feel right at home.

Materials List

Instructions

  1. Sketch your design with a pencil, starting with the background. Draw the mountains and the ground line around the entire vase. Keep proportion in mind; making items in foreground larger and background items smaller. Draw the rock with chameleon sitting on top in the foreground. If you don’t know how to draw a lizard, look online for images. Add in the cacti and dry grass areas.
  2. Use No. 8 Round to paint background. Apply three coats Bright Grape for mountains, Bright Aqua for sky, Bright Wintergreen for vegetation and Bright Grey for rock. Let dry after each coat.
  3. On palette, add a small amount of Bright Ginger to Dark Straw to create desert sand. Use No. 8 Round and apply three coats. Let dry after each coat.
  4. Use No. 1 Liner to paint three coats Kiwi Sprinkles to the lizard. Let dry after each coat.
  5. Mix a teaspoon of silica sand with the Dark Ginger until it is toothpaste consistency and then pat on in various areas for the dirt. Let dry.
  6. Use No. 1 Liner to add Dark Scarlet and Dark Ginger dots all over the dirt. Let dry.
  7. Use No. 1 Liner to add an outline and details to the lizard. Let dry.
  8. Use No. 1 Liner to add Black shadows and outlines on clouds, mountains, rock and vegetation. Let dry.
  9. Use. No. 6 Fan Glaze brush to apply two coats Pure Brilliance®. Let dry after each coat.
  10. Stilt and fire to witness cone 06.
