Whenever I get stressed or overwhelmed, I go in the art room and just...glue things. I have a bad habit of buying hardback blank journals, just so I can glue stuff to the covers! I have a whole bookcase shelf filled with them. Kinda like Anne Bancroft in How To Make An American Quilt (she breaks pottery when she's mad, and then lovingly mounts the broken pieces to the wall as an ongoing mosaic project)...except I affix stuff to journal covers.
I'm sharing this because I just cracked the above pictured blank book open to use as a new idea holder (all my others are filled up!). It's like shopping, without having to pay!
This is a fun project to make for a group craft night. Everyone can put all their supplies and clippings and trims in the center and go for it! Here are some other ideas:

Tin Flower Mirror and/or Candle Base
Labels:
mexi-crafts,

Easy project to add some colorful accents to your home!
Take one of those mirrors from IKEA, paint it. The take some heavy-duty shears and cut off the top and bottom of a Mexican juice (or soda) can. Smooth out the center - very carefully so you don't cut yourself. In fact, wear garden gloves for this project just to be safe!
On the silver side of the can, draw flowers with a permanent marker. Cut them out. Now repeat, making smaller flowers to go in the center of the other ones. Use a nail file to smooth the edges of the tin flowers. Use upholstery tacks or short nails to secure them to the wood frame (or glue). Add crystals in between the flowers. And now you have a cute candle tray!

Now that my book outline is done, I don't know what to do with myself after everyone goes to bed. That was my writing time, and I can't fall asleep any earlier than 1 a.m.
Therefore, I used the time to practice my sketching!
Don't judge, I'm still learning. Wonky eyes, wonky body shape, etc., I know, I know! Practice makes perfect, so I'm practicing!
After I finished this drawing, I noticed I used the word "she" two times. ARGH! In my mind it read "She had the whole world in her hands...and decided to share."
I pouted/cussed/hit the table so hard my stapler fell off the shelf for a moment and moved on. I can change it later, no problem. It will lead to more crafty opportunities. I can cover her dress in patterned paper or paint over it, or collage typed words over it.
Sometimes, mistakes are a good thing. They push us to learn and adapt. Accept them, own up, and march on to the next adventure!
(CRAFTY CHICA LESSON LEARNED: When it comes to illustrations, always do pencil first, and then step back and give it a once over. Make changes BEFORE you add the ink!)
I spent the night working my pencil-to-paper. Err, make that eraser to paper. I cranked up Bomba Estéreo and sketched away, bouncing in my chair the whole time. Here's a video of the band, I hope to see them in concert some day. I'll bring my sketchbook and dance in the front row at the same time!
Peace, love, and glitter!

Think of each one of your blessings as a brilliant, shiny bead.
Now visualize them as one big juicy cocktail ring that you wear everyday! Every time you doubt yourself or the situation your are in, glance at your ring and feel confident knowing you have a lot going for you!
Now how about manifesting this idea into an actual finger bauble?
You can buy a ring that has a lot of beads, or you can make your own!

Done! (For now)
Labels:
third novel,
writing
It only took four months, maybe even longer, but I sent over the first two chapters of my (hopefully) third novel, along with a 20K word outline.
It wasn't a matter of procrastinating, it was more about finding the right story to tell. And I've learned that if I put emphasis on a healthy outline, it makes the writing process go much faster. Granted, the final outcome will likely vary from the outline, but it feels good to have the major plot points worked out. An outline is like a pencil sketch.
People always ask me if the process is easier after writing two other novels. Yes and no. It's easier because I know what NOT to do. The hard part is coming up with new characters, new names, new jobs, new drama, etc. They have to be different from my previous characters. You have no idea how many awesome story arcs I drafted for this new book, only to step away and think - "Oh, that's Chloe." or "Eeee, that's Scarlet!" I had to go back in and re-craft!
What happens now is that my agent will read all of it and then let me know of revisions, and then it goes to my editor. It's up to her to decide if she wants to buy it or if she will send me back to the drawing (sketch) board. It's the whole "hurry up and wait" game, but I'm used to it and mentally prepared. Besides, I have plenty of other work to keep my mind occupied.
I'm using this post to send a message out to the universe in honor of Desi, Edie, and Juliet. I have come to love them and hope their stories make their way to the printed page so you can read all about them!
Peace, love, and glitter!

"WHAT are these for?"

| The topic of discussion at the fabric counter. |
The other day at the fabric store I asked the clerk to please cut my selected trims. Orange, hot pink, purple...you know, one of my usual color combinations.
She snipped the first two and then couldn't hold it in any longer.
"What are these for?"
"A lampshade!" I replied, just before I whipped out to snap the picture of my trims so I could blog the moment. I somehow knew it would be a memorable one.
My response made her even more confused. "All of them?" she asked right back.
"Yup!" I said proudly.
She kinda half smirked/half smiled and said "Hmmm. Well, good luck with that."
Just then the other fabric clerk came over and said, "Oh my gosh, it's the Crafty Chica! What are you buying?" She glanced at my trims and said, "Why of course, bright colors! I bet you are going to make something really neat with those!"
The other clerk was kind of startled at first and then seemed to go with the orange, hot pink and purple groove. She smiled bright and told me good luck and to have fun with my crazy trims.
The entire transaction ended on a happy note!
The moral of this story - always stay true to who you are, even if not everyone "gets" you. There will always be someone who does!

Last week was the 20th Annual Valle del Sol Profiles of Success Luncheon and awards ceremony - and this was the secret project I had been working on for the past two weeks with the Fridas.
Carlos from Valle called me a couple weeks ago and presented the idea of creating an art gown as the showstopper piece for the event's fashion show. I'm talking about an audience of almost 2,000 people! Of course I agreed, but called in reinforcements - my craft group, The Phoenix Fridas!

| Shopping for fabric. |
We sketched it and Anita and I shopped for fabric - 8 yards of Duponi silk, and lining too.
![]() |
| This is when I ombre dyed the silk. It was a challenge dyeing all that fabric on the kitchen counter. i did it late at night when everyone was alseep. There was blue dye everywhere! It looked like a ginormous blueberry exploded! Luckily, no one noticed by the next day. :-P |
She cut the pieces and I dyed them, Emily painted them and then 800 crystals were glued on!

The dress was auctioned off for over a hundred dollars, we were very happy!

BOOK REVIEW: Crochet It. Love It. Wear It!
Labels:
books
Anyone who has read my recent novel, knows that I have a character named Ofie in there who not only crochets, but crochets fast. Well, that aspect of Ofie's life is inspired by ME! I love to crochet! I learned many years ago from a Jamaican woman at a reggae party. She taught me how to whip out crocheted tams and beanies. I used to crank one out a night and then sell them at Patrick's concerts! I only know the double stitch, but I sure work it at miracle speed.
Because of this personal history with yarn, I've always had a soft spot for crochet. I once wrote a story for the newspaper about how crochet was the Jan Brady compared to knitting's Marcia. Knitting gets all the attention. I also interviewed Lily Chin when she won the International Speed Crochet competition!
Yup, I love me some crochet. In my opinion, we hot handed hookers are quirky as much as we are sassy.
If you agree, you'll love the spirit behind the new book, Crochet It. Love It. Wear It! by Drew Emborsky, The Crochet Dude.
There are thirteen projects that range from beginner to heavy duty expert. From skirts to scarves, there is something for everyone - even a type of crocheted corset.
Now here is my take on this book - I love all these offerings. They are tailored to show off a woman's best curves, the styles have movement, yet also structure, and come in gorgeous solid colors. Drew has a fun, conversational tone that makes you feel like he is right next to you, explaining his inspiration for the projects. This dude knows his stuff and is excited to share!
If you are like me and want to "chicafy" these looks, take each project as a wonderful foundation in which to build upon. Maybe a little weaved-in ribbon around the neckline, beads stitched in throughout, appliques here and there, etc.
Bottom line? No matter what your personality, there are oodles of opportunities with Drew's new page turner!
Peace, love, and glitter!
