Materials List
Instructions
  1. Select colors from the Crafty Chica™ Paint Pack™ and paint each of the watercolor paper pieces with a different color. Let dry.
  2. Choose six large Crafty Chica™ Loteria™ cards from the game, cut out and glue one on each of the watercolor pieces.

Things I'm smiling about...

1. Spent the day at B&N editing my next novel. It's so much better than I remember it and I can hardly wait for you to read it next March!

2. Even though my fingers are numb from holding pencils and erasing like crazy all day, I can still use them to hold a fork.

3. Finally figured out the middle action of my third novel.

4. Happy that I still remember the middle action so far because I haven't written it down yet. Hope to do that tomorrow night. Then I can begin to write the first two chapters.

5. Indulging in my newest TV guilty pleasure, Bravo's Work of Art: The Next Great Artist.

6. Excited to finish making a shadowbox headband for my iLoveToCreate art piece for CHA - and the fact that this time next month, I'll be in Chicago! With Maya too!

7. Planning to visit The Bleeding Heart Bakery while in Chicago.

8. Ready to spend every night this week - Except for the night that Work of Art is on TV! - prepping art for our Phoenix Frida's "Let Frida Reign" (this Friday).

9. Next month - San Antonio!

10. Joined the gym this weekend, have incorporated low-impact water aerobics into my lifestyle routine. A true sign that my Aztec Warrior Diet Angels are in full force by my side.

11. I cut out salt and bread from most of my meals. I can already notice the difference in my feet!

12. Patrick offered to help me with all my work this week. He had just finished his third Pacifico when he offered, but I have it recorded on video!

13. Even though they argue a lot and try to talk their way out of doing chores, having DeAngelo and Maya home for the summer.

14. Mañana será otro día (Tomorrow's another day!)

Peace, love, and glitter!

Glasswork, an artful bootie, and swimming.

(My workshop instructor's gorgeous glasswork jewelry!)

Tonight is my last night in Fresno and I capped off the week of craftyness with a glass fusing class at the Duncan Ceramics Hobby Shop. Artist and teacher, Vickie Recchia, made these beautiful samples in the picture above. It's called Fused Glass Pendants with Dichroic Glass. Here is the link to her site in case you live in the area and want to take a class!

Here is what I did (below). First we chose our background base glass and then sifted through trays of dichroic shards to add the design on top. We cleaned the pieces and added a dot of Aleene's® Clear Gel Tacky Glue™ to set them on the base glass.

Vickie is going to add a piece of clear glass on the top of my designs to give it a cool "under glass" look before she fires them. I made two necklace pendants and one ring. I can hardly wait to get them back to see how they came out!
Vickie gave us a lot of details about the different types of glasses that can be used and tips on what to ask artists when you buy fused glass art. There are certain glasses that work well together and some that don't. The latter can shatter when you least expect it.
I'm sorry I don't have more specifics at the moment.

My brain is fried tonight because I had a very busy week, but I'll do a Q&A with her about it her soon!

(my pre-fired pendants)

Okay, I have a funny story to tell you!

All week I've been busy at the iLoveToCreate working on models and show pieces for the upcoming CHA show. The biggest project is a mannequin to display an outfit I made. Since today was my last day, I was hustling to finish all my loose ends. At one point I plopped down the bottom half to my art mannequin on top of the fabric cutting table.

After work, there was a pillow making class for staffers. One of my co-workers brought her little son. There I was working away, hunched over at my desk, next to the sewing area, deep in concentration gluing crystals to a dress at my desk when I heard a child's voice say, "Ewww, what's this??"

"Eee gads," I thought. I swallowed. I did not dare raise my head. I knew what he was talking about.

No one answered so he asked again. "What is this? What's it for? Why is all this stuff glued on it?"

Pattie, the workshop teacher, politely replied, "Uh, that's...art..."

"Huh?" he said, now more confused than before.

"Kathy," Pattie said. "Want to explain?"

I lifted my head just enough to see this cute little boy slapping his hands on the butts cheeks of the mannequin, as if they were bongos. "No, that's okay!" I said, lowering my face back into my project.

Thankfully, Pattie led him away from the fabric cutting table to the other side of the room.

OMG, I was soooooo embarrassed. I can just hear him asking on the drive home - "Mommy, why did that lady at your work have that weird naked body there?"

Ahhh, I'll sure miss this place when I go back to Phoenix tomorrow!

Other things from this week (aside from the $100 bonus, mil gracias, Larry!), I've been swimming in the hotel pool every day and am super proud because I've been eating healthy at every meal. It's only been four days, but I already feel different - better! My daughter, Maya, warned me tonight that they have not been eating healthy at home. I'm determined to keep it up!

This weekend, I'm signing up for the gym so I can swim every day, and as soon as I can, I'm going to the grocery shopping for decent meals to cook. My diet/healthy lifestyle warriors angels are in da house, and I have to do everything in my power to entice them to stay!

Have a happy Friday!

Old School Office Craft: DIY Personalized Notepads

(my early craftiness, circa 1984. I used to have this haircut back then!)

My sister came across one of my early craft projects, stationery! I made this when I worked as the appeals clerk for traffic court. We're talking 1984 office supplies, folks. No glue sticks or computer graphics here.

Side note: I used to be a bailiff's assistant, but was "promoted" to appeals clerk.

Here's how it worked: When a defendant lost their case and felt wronged by the judge, they would head straight to the appeals counter, fuming mad. They would walk up, slam their hand on the bell and take out all their agression on the poor appeals clerk, who stood behind a bulletproof window. The appeals clerk would have to listen to the rant, and then inform the person that to proceed, they would have to pay $9 and fill out a bunch of forms and wait three months to be called back to court. After that, said clerk had to listen to more ranting about just losing a case and then having to pay money, yadda, yadda, yadda. Needless to say, the appeals clerk position had a high turnover rate because no one could handle the job.

And then I came along.

I was informed that because I "smiled so much and was always so happy!," the court administrator thought I would be the perfect person for the job. I embraced it, I loved a challenge.

I made it a goal to have each angry person leave with a better perspective. These people just wanted someone to listen to their story. 7 out of 10 times they calmed down after they finished. I would tell them I was sorry that happened to them.

The hardest cases to fight were radar speeding citations, because the officers used calibrated machinery. There was no way a defendant could prove they were not speeding against that. I was advised to inform defendants of this as a courtesy so they wouldn't waste their money or time. I did as instructed and offered them a treat from the candy dish that I would show them from behind the bulletproof window, and they would point to the one they wanted and I slid it through where we were to pass the forms. They'd take the candy, thank me, apologize for their bad attitude and then I'd direct them to the cashier so they could pay their fine. I'd go back to my desk and make office crafts (more on that in a bit)until the next person rang the bell.

Side note #2: The high point of this experience was when this mean dude - stereotypical jock - from my high school came to file an appeal. He used to taunt me so much in the hallways between classes. He would walk by, bump me and stare into my eyes with a snide glare until I looked away. He'd make rude comments about my curly hair, my chubbiness, and tell me that he and his friends had dubbed me "Wilhelmina."

So one day, three years after we graduated, there he was at my appeals window, ringing the bell. I recognized him right away. At first I wanted to be rude, or even hide behind the door to make him wait a really long time for service, but I had become more confident since high school. I had to set the standard of what an appeals clerk should be! I took his paperwork: Radar speeding ticket.

Just as I was about to tell him my bubbly and polite spiel about the calibrated machinery, his gaze locked with mine and he recognized me too. His whole expression changed to that of impressed shock. That was because this time, I was a size four with curves packaged in a tight dress with high heels and flat-ironed hair to match. His expression changed yet again, this time into a slimy grin. He made a comment about my chi-chis and asked me out. He winked at me in a super cocky way, as if I wouldn't be able to resist him. I just about barfed.

I ignored his comments and convinced him to file the appeal.

Woooo-hooo! He was out a hefty $9 because of me. Life crushing! You now know the dark side of Kathy! Yah, that's about how sinister I get. Even at 21, I knew about the laws of karma. I figured he'd get a wake-up call to change his ways sooner or later.

Anyway, back to the craft!!! While working as the appeals clerk, I had down time. Hello, office crafts!

I worked some old school cut and paste magic, and then doodled with felt markers and made a master sheet, which I then took to the secretary's Xerox machine and ran off two-up stacks of goldenrod, rose, and seagreen copies. I cut them on the ginormous paper cutter and then stacked and coated the top edges with rubber cement. I put the appeals handbook on top of the stack to weigh it down on my desk until it dried.

The next day, I had a thick fancy notepad! I used my special stationery for all interoffice correspondance. Doesn't it look so professional? Even though it was personalized, it was still used for work purposes!

Here is how to make your own:

Supplies:

Cut images from retro fashion magazines

Black marker

Aleene's Tacky Glue Stick (this is the updated version, okay?)

Rubber cement

Typing paper

Clear tape

Directions: Glue down the image and doodle designs around it. Don't forget to draw your name in fancy lettering! Use the tape to seal down the edges of the image you pasted so the shadow lines don't show. Make two copies, reduced 50%. Glue them down on one sheet of paper, so you have two up. Tape down the edges again. Make a gazillion copies. Cut them in half and arrange in neat stacks. Set a heavy book on top of the stacks, and apply rubber cement to the top. Let dry.

Thank you, Theresa, for finding a sheet of my special stationery, it brought back a lot of cheery memories!

Have you ever made an office craft? Please share!

Peace and love,

Kathy :-)

P.S. Wouldn't the mean guy story make a great plot for a novel or movie? Say he really likes the girl now, but she hates him and he has to redeem himself after what he did to her in high school. It's hopeless, she wants nothing to do with him, until a chain of events take place that makes her see him in a different light...wait. Is there already a movie like this??

Updates!

I'll be catching up on emails this week, and Patrick has mailed out orders and prizes! Thanks for being so patient!

On a side note - I'm headed to Fresno this week for five glorious days at iLoveToCreate headquarters! While I'm there I plan to walk on the treadmill at the hotel gym. I'm determined to start exercising. Working on crafts and writings books is great for the soul, but does nothing for the body! This is going to be tough for me because I HATE to exercise, but it is my last recourse to get on a healthy track. I'm so tired of feeling like I'm wearing layers of wet coats, it is exhausting! I'm ready to lighten up if only my willpower will kick in. We'll see how it goes!

Wish me luck! Let me know if you have any tips! Any favorite web sites? any great starter exercise programs for PLUS size chicas?

VIDEO: Tip for working with hot glue in tight spots!

Thank you to my little sister for helping me figure this method out!

Mommy gets treated on Father's Day too!

Father's Day: 30 lessons from Dad

(Dad's Heart, acrylic on plaster)

I made this to put on my dad's headstone today. I know it will be removed, but that's okay! My dad always expected me to make him things, so why should that change now? I wrote all the things I remember the most about him, and across the front it reads, "I miss you so much."

This is the first Father's Day without my dad. I'm going to be strong! To honor him, I thinking about all the lessons he taught me.

The biggest gift I can offer is to prove to him I really was listening to all those lectures!

Happy Father's Day to all the daddies out there (and mommies that fill in for daddies). And those of you who had your dad pass on, peace and love and hugs to you.

THINGS I LEARNED FROM MY DAD (in random order)

1. Always let the cake cool before you add the frosting.

2. Don't rub your eyes, touch your face, or pick your nose while de-seeding chile pods when making tamales. Cook the beef and pork in separate pots, and don't add too much or too little masa to the corn husk.

3. Keep your mouth closed while running, otherwise you'll taste bugs.

4. Never use up every socket on the power strip and turn each item on high - it WILL blow the fuse.

5. Keep family issues in the family.

6. If the car is overheating, don't open the hood and pour water on the engine.

7. Weekdays are for work, nights and weekends for hobbies.

8. If you want something bad enough, you'll work hard enough to get it.

9. If you have to cut your hair or dress a certain way to impress your friends, they aren't really your friends.

10. Do it right the first time.

11. Never make a big decision in an instant, sleep on it.

12. Make - and appreciate - what you have and don't compare. Just because someone else has fancy equipment or tools doesn't mean they know how to use it/them! Have confidence in what you have, and learn to work it to the best of its ability.

13. If your preteen daughter tries to sneak out of the house wearing blood red nail polish after you told her not to...and you discover she poured the polish remover down the sink thinking you'd have no choice but to let her go to the school dance like that - no worries! Wiping her nails down with turpentine from the garage will remove the polish!

14. Treat elders with respect.

15. Sometimes it's okay to stop waiting on others and just go out on your own.

16. Perfect measurements don't always equal perfect results, sometimes you just have to trust your instincts!

17. Stand up for the underdog!

18. Belly dancers make a nice gift for a dad's 50th birthday party. Seeing him blush is priceless!

19. Always have a Swiss Army knife on you.

20. Take care of your car and it will take care of you.

21. Listen to your mother.

22. It's wrong to hate something before you even try it. (This is when he tried to get me to eat sardines and pig's feet! No way!)

23. If you want to keep the little kids busy for a while, tell them you threw silver dollars in the backyard grass and for them to go find them. If you want to keep them out of the backyard, tell them that's where you keep the pet lions.

25. Teach your kids how to tell a good story, show them by example!

26. The secret to being a good parent is to always practice unconditional love.

27. Let loved ones know you are happy to see them by greeting them with a smile.

28. You needn't be a millionaire to lead a rich life (but that doesn't mean to go blow your money on crap!)

29. When you need to escape, go to the casino!

30. Make the most of every day. Appreciate being alive. Get up and go live your life and make the most of it!

Oh, there are gobs more!!! Thank you, Dad. Happy Father's Day!

Please share lessons from your dads too!

Peace, love, and glitter!
Kathy :-)

We are coming to San Antonio!

Patrick and I are making a special visit to San Antonio!

Remember when I went last November and loved it?

I have never met more friendly people than I have in SA. The crafters there really reached out to me and made me and Maya feel extra special. I will never forget that. I have not been able to stop thinking about San Antonio. I knew I wanted to return, only next time with Patrick!

We finally made it happen.

Here is the deal -

We are being hosted by the lovely Rebeca and Aida at Tres Rebecas (a Latino art boutique and book store). We'll have a trunk show, book signing, and reception on Friday, July 9th. The trunk show begins at noon, Patrick and I will have things we made for sale. At 6 will be a reception, as well as a free make-and-take craft project!

July 10 and 11th, we will be at the NCLR conference at the Tres Rebecas booth.

Any suggestions for must-see places for us to see while we are there?

Any suggestions for media contacts that I can send a press release to?

Let me know!!

Fiesta Flower Pot

This is an article I did a looonnng time ago for Craft Magazine. I just came across it and decided to share it here!

Folk artists in Mexico are a shining example of what being crafty is all about. They can't simply run to Michaels or Jo-Ann Fabrics for a hunk of fuchsia clay. Instead, our south-of-the-border friends make the most of their resources. The results are shiny, happy, thrifty, and wickedly clever. From painted tequila bottles to glittered cigarette boxes to wood frames trimmed in bottle caps, the materials and concoctions are endless.

I channeled that infectious spirit for this project, and used only what I had on my art table to accessorize a bland flowerpot. Toothpicks and head pins are great for making microdots, and small paint bottles as templates for shapes. The secret to this look is to cram in as many contrasting primary colors as possible.

Materials

Large terra cotta pot
Crafty Chica® Little Chica Paint Packs™
Crafty Chica® Glossy Gloss Varnish™
Cardstock
Scissors
Polymer or air dry clay

Craft knife
Cookie sheet and oven
Head pin or toothpick (for painting small details)
Hot glue

Step 1: Prepare the pot for painting.
Base-coat your pot with a paint color of your choice, then varnish it and let dry. Set aside.

Step 2: Make a template.
Use the bottom of the paint bottle to draw a silver- dollar-sized circle template on the cardstock. Cut out the template.

Step 3: Make the circles.

flashback-flowerpots-step3.jpg

Working on a clean, flat area, pinch off a hunk of clay, flatten it, and use the template to cut out a circle.

flashback-flowerpots-step3b.jpg

Pinch off another piece of clay and roll it into a long skinny snake, about the size of a spaghetti noodle. Arrange it around the clay circle to look like a border, and cut excess with the craft knife. Add a swirly design of choice in the center and cut off excess. Make 10-12 more.

Step 4: Bake the clay.
Bake in oven according to package directions — usually about 15 minutes at 175 degrees. Remove and let cool.

Step 5: Paint the circles.

flashback-flowerpots-step5.jpg

Base-coat the circles, then let dry. Add contrasting colors to the top ridges, let dry.

flashback-flowerpots-step5b.jpg

Use the head pin to add dots and squiggles, let dry. Add a coat of brush-on varnish, let dry.

Step 6: Attach the circles.

flashback-flowerpots-closeup.jpg

Hot glue the circles around the rim of the pot. Add more painted designs if desired, and a coat of high gloss varnish for that extra punch.

Variation: Add glitter to your circles, or make them in squares or other shapes. Use the clay to spell out words or other designs. Alternate the sizes of the circles for a crazier effect. If you absolutely must, use rubber or foam stamps on clay circles instead of swirlies.

Peace, love, and glitter!

CRAFTY CINEMA: Steel Magnolias

video

Tonight while finishing up a dress design for the upcoming CHA show, I had Steel Magnolias playing on the telly. I swear I've seen this movie a gazillion times, but tonight's viewing was the first time I saw this adorable crafty scene. How could I miss it?

"They had mismatched manger scenes at incredibly low prices. I cleaned them out of baby Jesuses, which I made into ornaments!"
- Annelle

Love. It.

Playing with papercutting

This by no means is a finished project, it is just a trial run of learning a technique. When I want to try a new craft, I don't spend a lot of time or money on the first draft, I just dive in and go for it. Usually by then I'll get the hang of it and take a more invested route.

So here is my rough draft of papercutting. I love it and plan to do more!

1. Sketch a design. Think simple - like a coloring book. I used a marker on a sheet of recycled typing paper. Put x's for the areas you want to cut out. Make sure your inner edges join with the outer edges.

2. (Patrick cut while I took this picture!) Use a craft knife and cut away where the x's are.

3. Glue it against contrasting paper. I saved the inner piece and glued it in the center.

Other ideas: Imagine drawing or writing on the paper before you cut it. Or using foil or tin. Fabric. Glitter sheets. Duct tape? Why not? There are so many variations!

I'll post pictures when I tackle a more detailed project! Until then, give it a try! If you need inspiration, check out Elsa Mora's wonderful site, All About Papercutting. Trust me, you will want to bookmark it!

Craft Therapy: Fabric markers on silk

This is a project I'm working on for an upcoming show. I found a vintage silk slip at Goodwill for $3 and am giving it a makeover. If you are thinking, why do that to a vintage slip? Don't worry, they actually had a lot of them! Check out your local GW to see for yourself!

I drew on it with my markers and will go over it with colors and maybe some crystals here and there. I love drawing on silk, it is so relaxing. I crank up my tunes and the times floats on by. Next thing I know, I can't find an extra spot to draw on, that's when I know I'm halfway done.

Art is so healing. And calming. What would we do without it?

Wacky Rhinestone Day of the Dead Earrings!

I like gaudy, okay?

I bought some wire frames on clearance at the craft store and wanted to give them the chica treatment. You know, something that I bet no one else ever did with these wire frames.

So I pulled out my trusty bottle of Aleene's® Original Tacky Glue® and rubbed a bit on each side of the frame and then wrapped embroidery thread all around. I kept going from there. Stuff on top of stuff on top of stuff. The sugar skull picture is from the Crafty Chica® Inspiration Card™ set.

Can you guess how many steps went into the making of this pair of earrings? I'll wait here while you count.

Alright stop counting, it's a LOT.

Sometimes when I'm lost in thought while crafting, my hands get carried away and keep going and going. It could be the inside of a sunflower seed shell and I'd still find a way to add paint, glitter a pop-out focal point picture. That was the case with these earring. I have yet to wear them. They are a wee bit heavy, so I might change them to clips.

Yay, another step!

Peace, love, and glitter!
Kathy :-)

Weekend stuff

This weekend was action-packed! Movies! Pool parties! Brunches! Lunches!

Here are some pics from Barrio Cafe today. We met some friends from the cruise for brunch and to see Patrick's paintings on display!

Sorry for the grainy photos, I took them with my cell phone.
We met this guy in the parking lot. He drew and cut all these stencils and then used them to decorate his car. The dashboard was painted like piano keys. Wish I had snapped a picture of that!
Bathroom. I am adding this idea to my home improvement to-do list for the summer. I love this simple mosaic tile pattern. I'm going to use all kinds of art tiles. Different sizes of squares. I can handle that. Our front bathroom needs a serious update, and this is it!

I ordered Mexican coffee and this is what I got. YUM. French-press with a shot of Kahlua (much better than yesterday's Starbucks FAIL). I drank half the pot! It is 12:31 am right now and I'm still buzzing...bzzzz....bzzzzz...BZZZZZ!!

Aw, yah, bring it on home to mommy. Dessert: Stuffed churros filled with sweetened goat cheese, drizzled with chocolate espresso sauce. This followed our brunch of huevos con chorizo...y pan...y salsa...y ceviche...

After this we went to our other friend's house for a BBQ dinner, which was equally delish in every way! We were FULL by the time we got home in the evening. I didn't even mention that yesterday we had two parties going on, well, actually three. It was quite the social weekend.

In between all of this, I've been working away on my book outline. It is taking much longer than I thought it would. Right now I'm hoping that today's fancy coffee keeps me up a bit longer so I can get some more chapters detailed. Once I close out the file, I can't open it until after work tomorrow. I'll be thinking about it all day!

Okay, getting back to work. Everyone have a super Monday!

Peace, love, and glitter!
Kathy :-)

CRAFTY CINEMA: The Karate Kid

When I first heard about The Karate Kid remake, I rolled my eyes like everyone else who experienced the 1984 version. I scoffed and said "Noooo....! How could that movie studio even think of doing that?"

But then I remembered feeling the same way about the Freaky Friday remake. And Pride and Prejudice. And Dawn of the Dead. And Star Trek. I gave two thumbs up to those do-overs.

We’ll have the luxury of a large conference room 24/7, plus daily use of the dining room to craft our hearts out! All skill levels of crafters welcome.

This is our BIGGEST cruise ever!

With special guest...

Traci Bautista!
I'm delighted to announce that Traci will be joining us on the 5th Annual Cruise! She is a long time friend, a fellow craftista with a artful spirit, savvy business sense, a pure heart and oodles of creativity and talent! She'll teach a mini-workshop one night on the cruise! Her energy is infectious, you know what I mean if you have ever met her!

Click here to visit Traci's site where you can see more of her art collage work, as well as her new online classes. http://www.treicdesigns.com/
