I'd like to introduce you to my new best friend: the silicone mold. I've been collecting these everywhere. I found them in the dollar bins at Target, Torrid clothing shop and, of course, the craft store in the baking aisle.
I've used these life-changing flexible molds for ice cubes, resin key chains, edible baked treats, melt and pour soaps, and my favorite - candles. I'm watching my waistline so I decided to burn a cupcake instead of eating one.
Candle supplies can be found at the craft store.
Supplies:
1 Dutch oven1 package of candle wax (white)
Oven mitts
1 metal candle-pouring pitcher
Chopstick
1 candle-wax thermometer
Candle colors
Candle scents
1 silicone mold for cupcakes
1 package of tall candle wicks
1 rubber spatula
1 hole puncher
Directions: Fill the Dutch oven half way with water and heat until boiling.Wearing the oven mitts, place cut up chunks of wax (2 cups' worth) into the pouring pitcher and set inside the boiling water. Reduce heat to medium.Stir with chopstick until wax is liquefied. Insert thermometer, and when the temperature reaches 180 degrees, you are ready to add desired drops of color and scent, according to package directions.Stir to mix. Lift pitcher out of water and pour a thin layer of wax in the mold, insert wick. Finish filling the mold. Let cool completely. Remove from mold.Repeat candle melting process again, but this time, put in a different color for the frosting. Remove from heat once liquefied, let cool until you stir the wax so it looks like frosting. Again, wearing the oven mitts, dip the spatula in the wax and "frost" the cupcake. Let cool. For sprinkles: Heat a bit of wax and add a different color and pour thin layers into the mold. Let cool, pop out, and use hole puncher to create decorations.Warning: Always use extreme caution when working with candle wax. Do not use around small children. Burn candle in a safe place, and never leave unattended.

Glittered Cactus Garden

If you read Waking Up in the Land of Glitter - then you know all about making a glittered cactus garden centerpiece! The characters in the book went through a LOT of drama to make 200 of these babies!

The directions are in the back of the book, but in case you need a little visual inspiration, here is a photo!

Supplies:
Assorted plastic cactuses (found in the floral department at the craft store)
Assorted loose green and white Crafty Chica and Tulip Glitters
Collage Pauge® Instant Decoupage or Aleene's® Original Tacky Glue®, brush
Crafty Chica® Little Chica Paint Pack™
1 medium flowerpot
Floral foam
Faux moss or straw
Large piece of construction paper to catch overflow of glitter

Directions: Insert the floral foam in the pot. Take the largest cactus, remove the thorns and set them aside. Dip the brush in the glue and paint over the surface; pour on the glitter while the glue is still wet and shiny. Continue until the entire cactus is covered. Let dry and return thorns to holes. Repeat the process for the next cactus, but use a different shade of green glitter. Continue for remaining cacti. When they are dry, insert them in desired arrangement into the floral foam. Add the moss or straw to cover the foam.

Variations: Instead of a green cactus garden, you can create a frosty look by using white and silver glitters. The plastic cacti also come in miniature versions, so you can insert them in minipots and use as small gifts or place card holders. Add white or green minilights for even more sparkle.

Giveaway Day 2

TODAY'S QUESTION:

In Waking Up in the Land of Glitter, Ofie went a bit overboard with her obsession of crafting, even going so far to shop for art supplies instead of family groceries. Have you ever reached a point in your life when you felt your hobby or was out of control? If so, what was the "wake-up" call? If not, how do you stay on track? And most of all, why do you think so many crafters and artists become obessive?

Daily: Leave your answer to today's question in the comment section to be entered. One entry per person. I'll post the day's winner in the next day's post.

Giveaway week begins!

TODAY'S QUESTION:

In Waking Up in the Land of Glitter, when Star, Ofie and Chloe come together for their first craft group meeting, they have a discussion about art vs. craft. Star feels art consists of one-of-a-kind pieces that cannot be replicated and that have a message to relay. After noticing Ofie's kitschy crafts that are all about love and happiness, Chloe informs Star that according to her theory, Ofie's work qualifies as "art."

What is your personal take on art vs. craft? What separates the two?

TODAY'S PRIZE: A package of Crafty Chica® Mojito Papers™ , one Crafty Chica® Iron-On Applique™ , and a new copy of the DVD, Valentine's Day (donated by Warner Bros pictures).

Painted Patchwork Car Mat

Looking for a cool way to customize your auto interior? How about a set of car mats made to your liking? This method is thick and durable and you can paint it any way you want!

Supplies:
Crafty Chica® Little Chica Paint Pack™
Crafty Chica® Glossy Gloss Varnish™
Heavyweight canvas (primed)
Brushes
Rubber stamps or stencils
Your old car mat
Sewing machine with heavy needle

Directions:
Use your old car mat as a guide. Cut shapes out of the canvas and lay them on top of the old car mat until you have the general shape. Make sure your design overlaps the carmat because you will need to sew the pieces together. Turn the pieces over and number them on the back, and then take a picture on your cell phone for reference. I'm sure there is an easier method, but this is how I made mine...)

Paint and embellish the pieces, let dry and then coat them with 5 to 6 coats of varnish 9let dry between coats). Set them back on the car mat and sew them piece by piece until you have the whole thing. Cut away excess. Sew around the edges.

Add two more coats of varnish. Repeat for the remaining car mats.

TIP: If you want, you can glue rug grippers to the back of the mats so they don't slide in your car.

Ping...ping..ping!

As you may or may not have noticed - I learned about Ping.fm today. It's a really cool site where you can post a status update and have it hit across every feed you have.

I got a little Ping happy. Not sure if you readers want to see my Twitter updates mixed in here. They kinda add a cluttered effect. So, I'll only Ping for a newsflash sort of thing!

Oh no! Bret Michaels is back in the hospital! :-( Get well soon!

When I told DeAngelo to live artfully, this is not what I had in mind!

He did this to freak me out - and it sure worked! He was kidding. Minutes later, he finished shaving his head for the summer...BOYS! Grrrr!

Husband just told me to put down the ping and get back to art stuff! Bye for now!
Probably old news to many, but if you have a lot of sites to update, http://ping.fm is great! Mobile version too!
Learning to Ping while paint is drying. multitasking
Our son just volunteered to be our personal asst again for the summer. Yay for free labor!
Today @ Lola Coffeebar, girl from next table told me about Ping.fm. Trying it!

Every day is a new day.

This Friday is a big fundraiser event called Noche de Loteria and I promised to make something for the silent auction. When I agreed a few weeks back, i had a vision of transforming one of my vintage suitcases into a masterpiece. Well, wouldn't you know, the time came around so fast!

Here is the end result. It says "Every day is a new day." This is a picture before the final touch ups. I wish I had blended the red and yellow better around her hair, but I'll know for next time.

To make this, I first sketched with the pencil, traced the designs with a permanent marker and then added the paint (Crafty Chica® Little Chica Paint Pack™ ), trimmed it in Crafty Chica® Chunky Glitters™, and added several coats of Crafty Chica® Glossy Gloss Varnish™.

Painting old suitcases is so much fun, such a stress reliever. And they make great room poppers because they have so much character. You can stand them up, or stack them to make an end table. For our Heard Museum exhibit, I used them as wall shelves (see picture below).

If I were going to use the suitcase for actual traveling, I'd coat the painting with two-part resin. But it is meant to be a decorative item. Hopefully someone will bid on it. I even filled the inside with all kinds of other goodies!

Peace, love, and glitter!
Kathy :-)

Tee-lined tote

This is a light sewing project that is very easy! This is for when you find a really cool t-shirt at the store but they don't have your size. Buy it anyway and turn it into a tote that you can use every day!

Supplies:

1 blank canvas tote
1 fabric that measures the area of one side of the tote
graphic design from tee cut out
interfacing
Crafty Chica® Extreme Embellishment Glue™
Crafty Chica® Chunky Glitters™

Directions:

1. Iron on the interfacing to the back of the tee design and then sew to the center of the fabric.
2. Turn the fabric over and use a brush to add an even coat of Crafty Chica® Extreme Embellishment Glue™ from edge to edge.
3. Apply the fabric to the tote. Smooth down with your hands. Let dry.
4. Coat areas of the tee with Crafty Chica® Extreme Embellishment Glue™ and pour on Crafty Chica® Chunky Glitters.

This is just a basic idea, but you can do more by making a fabric collage or mosaic on the fabric.

Cupcake Scrubber Shrine - Why not?

I have a way of blending one project into another. I'm thinking about the theme of my third novel and cupcakes keep bouncing around my brain. Sacred cupcakes. After asking around, I learned a lot of chicas are into baking and decorating not only pastelitos, but also large theme cakes.

Now where did the scrubber aspect come? My friend Kim showed me a Virgin of Guadalupe shrine she made on a silver scrubber and then gave me a blank one. Something about the shiny silver lends for that glowing tinsel look that I love.

I thought it fit perfect with the cupcake theme of the kitchen, cleaning the mixing bowl, etc. This would be really cute with a ribbon for hanging. Darn, I wish I had thought of that before I took this picture!

This would be a cute gift to make for the cupcake maker in your life - a little inspiration charm for his or her kitchen!

Supplies:
Net-coated sponge scrubber
Crafty Chica® Iron-On Appliques™ (Cupcake)
Crafty Chica® Extreme Embellishment Glue™
Gems or sequins
Letter beads
Tulip® 3D Fashion Paint™

Directions: Glue the applique in the center. Add dots of 3D paint to add the letters along the bottom. Squeeze extra so the color will look like a background to each letter. Now one-by-one, use the glue to add the gems or sequins. Add a ribbon to the back for hanging. You can embellish even further with trims, buttons, fringe, etc.

Virgin of Guadalupe Jewelry Chest

IF YOU CAN'T SEE THE SLIDE SHOW ABOVE, CLICK HERE!

This is a jewelry chest I made from IKEA wood organizer shelves and an old step stool. I saw a variation of this idea and decided to try it and revamp it in my own chica way! I hot glued fake roses all over the outside and left a space for the light up Virgin of Guadalupe statue (she is holographic!).

I covered the front of the drawers with green glittered vinyl using Aleene's Crystal Clear Tacky Glue Spray. The trick to using this product is to first coat both things to be glued together and let them sit for a minute, and then join them. Super bond!! The fabric goes on so smooth, no bumps or blemishes at all! I wish I could Tacky Spray some other things in my life... ;-)

As for the top of the chest, you could put anything in the center as the focal point - a glittered dog, a Lucha Libre bank, a large picture frame, etc...

After I placed La Reina on the top, she needed more glitz. So I took a 14" embroidery hoop and wrapped a multi-colored light string around it and added it to the back.

CRAFTY BUSINESS: DIY vs. hiring someone

I've always, always been a DIY girl. I think I inherited that mindset from my dad. I can look at something and figure out a way to make my own version. And not only about art, also about business. I'm a wheeler and a dealer.

For this post, I'm not talking about DIY home repairs or taxes, I'm talking about DIY as it applies to the business aspect of your creative career.

La Loca Pencil Cup

Pens are like crack for crafters. I have boxes and boxes of pens, markers and pencils in every brand under the sun. I can't stop collecting them. Especially ones with glitter in them.

I always rotate new favorites across my desk. However, lately I have too many favorites so I had to make a special holder for them.

This is what I came up with. It's just a painted flower pot that I decorated with my Crafty Chica® Little Chica Paint Pack™, then I glued the post to the base of the pot (which is turned upside down) and glued things around the top. The "things" are from a bracelet I bought at the dollar store that I cut up. Suddenly that little bracelet turns into a handful of charms! I added buttons and strands of beads for good luck.

I love my new pencil cup!

Mother's Day Silhouette Bracelet

This project is inspired by those silver silhouette charms of boys and girls. Member those???

I used shrink plastic to make these, and I think any mom would swoon over something like this!
It's very personalized because the heads are from family members. I even included a doggie too :-) I made a bracelet, but you could also make a necklace to match!

Supplies

1 package of shrink plastic
black spray paint
black fine line permanent pen
hole punch
heat gun or toaster oven
Bracelet chain with clasp
Medium jump rings
Needle nose pliers
Camera and printer
Beads and head pins (optional)

Directions: Have each person stand at a profile for you. Take the pictures and then print them out to 4x6 size. Cut out the profiles from the paper. Take one sheet of shrink plastic and place the profile down and use the pen to trace it. Cut it out. Use the hole punch at the top. Shrink the piece, either with a heat gun or by following the manufacturers package directions. Do the same for all the heads. When they are shrunk, take them outside and spray paint them black on one side. Let dry, flip them over and repeat. When they are completely dry, use the jump rings and needle nose pliers to attach to the bracelet chain. Add beads to the eyepins and attach if desired.

Peace, love, and glitter!

MOTHER'S DAY: Eyeglass Holder Necklace

Is your mom always looking for her eyeglasses? Keeping them around her neck is the easiest way to keep them safe, but those double loop eyeglass chains are so last decade. It's time to upgrade the idea.

I saw some of these eyeglass holder necklaces at the bookstore recently and knew it was exactly what I wanted to make for my mom for Mother's Day. Sure you can buy one, but it's much more fun to spend a relaxing night in front of the TV set beading, don't you think?

(Wear the necklace and hang the eyeglasses from the ring)

This is one of my "halfway handmade" ideas. I only made half of this necklace - the tiny beaded strands. The faux pearls came in two strands and I simply unhooked them and connected them to portions I made.

You'll need:
.018 bead string wire
#1 size crimp beads
a crimp tool
beads
large ring
charm (optional)
pre-connected strand of beads (optional)

Using matching, yet contrasting beads, string portions (about 4" each)and close the ends off with a crimp bead and jump ring. NEWBIES: Watch this little video to see how to attach crimp bead and start beading. Instead of a clasp, add a small jump ring. Keep going until you like the length.

Easier way: Make half the amount of stands and fill in with pre-connected beads like I did!

MOTHER'S DAY: Art Crowns

This project started with a dollar store plastic tiara like this:
I picked up a few of them and transformed them into Mother's Day art crowns! First thing - cover the cheapie plastic. For the one that says MOM, I wrapped it with colorful yarn, using white craft glue to seal it down. I bought some blank wood letters and painted them in all kinds of contrasting colors and accents and then hot glued them to the top of the crown.

For the other, I hot glued silk leaves around it. I used the "Forever a Queen" card from the Crafty Chica Inspiration Deck and glued it to a circular piece of wood, which I then trimmed in glitter. It needed height so I used some snowflake ornaments leftover from the holidays and glued those behind the circle. I glued rose buds at the bottom and wow, the crown is amazing!

These are just two ideas!! Here is the trick - if you wrap the base in fabric strips or yarn - something to make it smooth, you can then glue away to decorate it! Make one for your mom to wear while she opens her gifts, she will truly feel like a QUEEN!!

MOTHER'S DAY: 'Hablamos' Flower Pot

This flower pot gives mom the gift of your undivided attention. Just you and her, everything else tuned out.

Often we are so busy with our routines, deadlines and chores that we forget to just kick back and chat. Let this flower pot that says "hablamos" (we talk) change that.

Here is how it works. Think of it as a conversation starter. You decorate a flower pot that relays the message in your own special way. It becomes a type of symbol in the house that represents quality time.

When your mom is running around trying to save the world, step in to help her out so she will finish up early and then she'll have free time to sit down with you. Set the flower pot in front of you two and well, talk. About anything - her day, her challenges, her accomplishments or even sharing a story about when she made you proud. Moms love stuff like that!

Supplies:

1 terra cotta flower pot
Crafty Chica® Little Chica Paint Packs™
Crafty Chica® Tango Permanent Fabric Markers™
Letter beads or Magnetic Poetry beads or magnets (my first choice, but I was all out, so I used letter beads)
Liquid Fusion® Clear Urethane Glue
Brushes
Pencil
For paper flowers: tissue paper, chenille stems, floral foam

Directions:
Base coat the flower pot with the paint, let dry. Use a pencil to sketch a doodle design of you and your mom and the word "hablamos" - or you can choose any word or phrase you want. Go over your lines with the black marker. Set the pot on its side and apply a medium to thick layer of glue and add beads, one-by-one. Slowly work your way around the ridge of the pot. The glues dries pretty fast, so work on a two-inch section at a time.

To make seven medium-sized flowers, cut out 6-inch circles of teal tissue paper (12-15 per flower) and 3-inch cirles of yellow (4-5 per flower). I used teal and yellow, but you can use your mom's favorite colors!

Stack the yellows on top of the teals. Fold over and cut two small snips in the center of the fold all the way through. This will create two openings in the center of the stack. Cut a piece of the chenille stem, about 6-inches, and thread it through the holes from the top of the flower to create a stem at the base of it. Twist the strands to make a secure stem. Now, starting that the top piece of yellow tissue paper, carefully crunch it to the center. Continue until all the layers are fluffy. Insert the floral foam inside the pot, and stick the stems of the flowers into the foam.
