Working on project step-outs!

Did you get your GLITTER yet?

I had a nice catch up talk with my book editor yesterday and now have enough creative fuel for the rest of the summer! Whoa, spring isn't even over yet!

My manuscript for Miss Scarlet has been sent off to the copy editor. Funny thing, I had rewritten the first chapters last week and told my editor. Her reply? "No. It's done!"

At first my heart sank, but then I realized that every project has to come to an end at some point. If I could, I would rewrite certain parts of GLITTER, and so on and so on. I'm like that with my craft designs too, I keep adding and adding until Patrick comes over and say, "STOP! It's done!"

So now what do I that Miss Scarlet is being primped and prepped for her debut? Start on book three, that's what! My goal is to get writing by summer, so that means I need to forumlate the idea, devise the characters (their goals and weaknesses), write the outline, etc...

Even though Miss Scarlet stretched me beyond my limit, I'm ready for the next round. I know even more things of what not to do!

And for those of you who want to buy Waking Up in the Land of Glitter, but haven't yet - hurry!!! Here's why: The first edition has that beautiful embedded glitter on the cover, spine and back cover. Once the first batch is sold out (soon) the next printings won't have that feature. So consider them collector's items! Buy your copy today!

I'm still looking for promotional opps to help get the word out:

- If you have a blog, podcast, radio show, Twitter or Facebook etc, would you be interested in featuring it?

- If your local bookstore doesn't have it or is sold out, please ask for it.

- If you know of a cool indie craft boutique, ask the owner to carry it. You can email here for info: customer.service@hbgusa.com

- Mention the book to your friend, family, co-workers, or even something as easy as standing on top of your car and using a megaphone to shout out the news. This chica would so appreciate it!

Here is the link to a copy: Waking Up in the Land of Glitter!

TEACHERS: Five W Storyteller Book Lesson Plan!

This is a project I developed for our iLoveToCreate booth at the National Association of Art Educators conference that was held last week. I attended the show last year and loved it. Remember how excited I was when I came home?

Well, this year's event was the same week as the cruise and I didn't realize that when I booked the dates. But I was there in spirit! My friend and co-worker, Pattie Wack went and I should be getting the scoop from her soon.

At least I was there in spirit! Here is a project I designed for our display! If you are a teacher, it makes for a great lesson plan. also, did you know that iLoveToCreate has a whole educator program called ColorWorks? that is free? Check it out here!

Okay, on to the project!

The five W words (who, what, where, when, why) are critical in language and storytelling, and will be used all throughout life in writing and speaking. This
exercise will help young students practice and creatively play with the
meaning of these words by matching words to go with them in a cohesive,
simple story. Choose a subject for your students or have them choose their own; it can be a pet, movie, fairy tale or even a headline in the news!

Materials List

Instructions

  1. Select two sheets from the Mojito Paper set to cover each cardboard piece. Set one sheet face down on work surface then use the glue stick to coat one side of cardboard piece with the glue stick and set it glue side down in the center of the paper. Glue other sheet to other side of cardboard piece. Repeat with other cardboard piece.
  2. Cut a diagonal incision on each corner of the paper covering cardboard pieces. Apply glue to the paper flaps and fold them inward and press against cardboard piece to create finished edges on each side. Repeat for the other cardboard piece to create book covers.
  3. Cut the sheet of construction paper to 4¼” wide. Cut more strips and glue end-to-end until you have a 35” long piece.
  4. Create 5” pages by fan folding the strip seven times.
  5. Use the glue stick to glue one end panel to the inside of each book cover. Now you will have an accordion book.
  6. Have the student dedicate a page to each of the following in this order:
  • Who (subject of their story)
  • What (sentence that says what happened to subject)
  • Where (sentence that says where it happened)
  • When (sentence that says when it happened)
  • Why (sentence that says why it happened)
  1. They can use markers to draw pictures to go with their story.

INSPIRATION FRIDAY: Martin Armado

Design Detail: Recycling Tips for Kids

-- Martin Amado

Earth Day is celebrated now in April, so this is the perfect time to start teaching our kids the importance of being eco-friendly. And what better way to inspire them than to turn recycling into a fun game that will help conserve our planet, too! It is this month’s Design Detail, which is where I highlight a quick DIY project on a budget.

The concept is to have separate bins in their bedroom and/or playroom where the children can learn how to recycle items properly and dispose of garbage. I began by purchasing three waste baskets for only $2.00 each at Target. Instead of placing them on the floor like a typical waste basket, I made them part of the room’s décor by hanging them on the wall. It makes recycling fun as the kids can attempt to throw the items into the baskets as if they were basketball hoops! I hung the bins from a simple drawer knob, but you can also use a larger cup hook. Just keep in mind that the idea is to be able to take them off when they are full and put back on, so you don’t want to screw them permanently to the wall.

The most important step is to label the baskets accordingly for recycling the different items and this where the children can also help. I used adhesive letters that can be purchased at any craft store and separated the bins into plastic, paper and garbage. Super easy to do!

I implemented this concept in a playroom, but you can also do the same in your garage or kitchen and add more bins for the adults to include aluminum and glass. It’s a rewarding activity where the entire family can contribute as a team and do their part to conserve our planet!

Martin Amado is a television designer, lifestyle expert, and contributing writer on the subject of home décor. He is the designer on the national home makeover program, Decorando Contigo, airing on the Spanish-language Galavision Network and can also be seen on Room for Improvement on WSVN 7 News, a FOX affiliate in Miami, FL. He works exclusively with clients through his home styling company, The WOW Factor!, Inc., where he specializes in one-day makeovers and working with a minimal budget to achieve the decorator look for less! Ofie wants you to crochet!

If you read my novel, Waking Up in the Land of Glitter, you know about the character of Ofie Fuentes and her passion for crochet.

Well, when I saw this new campaign from Red Heart, I knew Ofie would want me to encourage all of you one-handed hookers out there to join in, buy a kit, and stitch some scarves for a good cause!

My beloved Nana Cano was an avid crocheter all her life and she passed away from heart disease. She would have loved this and cranked out dozens of these babies! I'm buying and making one in her honor and I hope you'll join me! This is a cause close to my...well, heart.

From the site:
HeartScarves Crochet Kit

Red Heart Yarns and WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease have joined forces to create the HeartScarves Project Kit featuring everything you need to knit or crochet a red scarf. HeartScarves provides handmade red scarves to members of WomenHeart Support Networks, and to women undergoing cardiac procedures. The red scarves offer comfort, support, and encouragement for a woman with heart disease and become a part of her healing journey. For every kit purchased, Red Heart will donate $3 to WomenHeart.

4th Annual Crafty Chica Cruise: Day Five (Part 1)

The craftermath!

This last day was CRAZY! We all woke up early and headed to the art room. We spent the day creating our mixed media art badges and embellishing ceramic sacred hearts, hand cast for us by indie artist, Cesco. You can find his work on Etsy! Special thanks to Annette Armas from CJ's Angels for facilitating it. She and her husband drove the precious cargo from Cesco's studio in Los Angeles to our hotel in San Diego so we could have these special hearts.

We used gobs of Aleene's® Original Tacky Glue® , Crafty Chica® Little Chica Paint Packs™, Crafty Chica® Glossy Gloss Varnish™ and Crafty Chica® Chunky Glitters™ to decorate them, as well our Tim Holtz Grunge Books (Thank you, Tim and Ranger!)

Grungebook in progress!
Ok, this class was one of the earlier nights in the week, but I just remembered it now. Patrick taught the cruisers how to make shadow boxes using recycled shims.

At the beginning of the week, we all exchanged names and then made a secret gift for our person. Everyone put a lot of thought and care into it!
Down from 32 pieces of luggage to this. Time to go home!

4th Annual Crafty Chica Cruise: Day Four (Part 3)

Yes, as you can see, Day Four was action-packed!

The highlight of our shopping excursion was visiting a Mexican fabric store where one could find sequins the size of grapefruits and oilcloth for a little over $2 per yard. Our only challenge? We took so long in the arts district that we only had 30 minutes to shop in the fabric store! It was like crafty supermarket sweep! Next year, I'm booking a good three hours for the fabric store alone, there were so many things to look at and shop from!

The peso was about 10 to a dollar - so check out the price of that oilcloth!

Now, let me tell you how this works. You go to the various departments and ask someone to cut your portion of fabric or trim. Then they write up a little ticket and give it to you.
After you gather all your tickets, you take them to the cashier, which is one booth in the center of the store. One cashier. ONE. (There were two cash registers, but when we went, only one worked)
After you pay, she hands you your tickets back and you go to another booth to pick up your goods. Imagine the flurry of emotion I triggered when I asked to buy a magazine at the last minute. They had to call over the loud speaker for a guy to come write me a ticket. But it was a cute Mexican fashion glossy, I wanted it! Meanwhile, our bus driver was hollering at us at the entrance of the store because our cruise ship was about to leave Cabo!

It all worked out! We also had a free cocktail party one of the past nights, I can't remember which one, but it was fun. The waiters strolled in with wide trays filled with drinks in every color.

The minors had virgin rum punches with pineapples.
After dinner we had a mini-workshop making resin pendants, taught by Michele Parlee, the Artsy Gringa!
