Starbucks VIA makes great iced coffee. Easy!
Peaceful.
My dad died nine months ago and I had yet to visit his grave at St. Francis Cemetery. I’m still very emotional at the mention of his name, the memory of his voice and roughness of his cheek when I would kiss him goodbye. I know many of you can relate. I thought standing at his headstone would take me to a deeper level of sadness, and I didn’t want to go there.
A dear friend of mine, who lost her son five years ago, recently had a party where all the family and friends made beautiful painted rocks to put at his grave. I felt maybe I could do the same in honor of my dad’s birthday, and set them at his resting place. It never happened.
Monday night, I chewed on my thumbnail as I wrestled to write an essay. I finally began to type and get in my groove when I heard my dad say “KATHY!” – the same way he would call my name from across the house. I jumped in my chair - it startled me! Next thing I knew, the essay just flowed from my fingertips like water from a pitcher. That moment became the inspiration for the piece. I went to bed content.
I think that experience triggered an event the next day...
Yesterday afternoon, my mother-in-law called and right before we hung up she mentioned she was headed to St. Francis’ to leave flowers at her parents’ graves.
“Are you coming this way?” I asked.
“No, just taking the freeway,”
“Okay, well, I’ll talk to you soon, bye!”
“Why?”
“Why?” I repeated.
“Why did you want to know if I was going in your direction?” she asked.
“Oh, I thought maybe I’d go with you…” I said, figuring it wasn’t meant to be.
“Actually, you just reminded me that I need to pick up the flowers from Darla’s, I will be going your way. I’ll call you when I’m almost there.”
My heart raced. Not quite to the point of a panic attack, but a few notches lower. She picked me up, we drove across town to St. Francis’ and parked in front of the area where my dad was buried. I took a deep breath and wandered around until I found his plot. I didn’t break down or sob. My sister was right.
Peaceful.
My mother-in-law walked up and handed me a bouquet of hot pink flowers to put in the vase. Okay, most people would think “hot pink flowers for Dave Cano?” I couldn’t help but smile. The flowers were the SAME color of the ring I wear of his. It made me laugh a little and I snapped this picture.
I knew he was happy that I visited and that’s why I didn’t feel sad. He loved company, especially during the hospital days. His face would brighten up as soon as any of us crossed the doorway. I think he loved that we brought the vibe of our busy, adventurous lives into his cozy corner.
After I set the flowers in the vase and talked to him in my head, we got in the car and drove to another area of the cemetery for my mother-in-law’s parents’ graves. We parked, she popped open the trunk and removed the lid to a large plastic bin full of all kinds of silk flowers and fake Easter eggs. She loaded up her arms and we made the rounds to Patrick’s Grandma Minnie, Grandpa Greg, Aunt Socorro, and our friend Andie.
As she arranged the bouquets in each one, adding the colorful eggs in all the right spots, I looked around the cemetery. There were flowers everywhere in all kinds of beautiful shades. I realized that the only time I ever went to St. Francis’ was for a burial. I never noticed the flowers on the graves. They are all part of the process of grieving and moving forward.
Now I feel inspired to paint those rocks for my dad and set them at his headstone. I know he would like them very much. ☺
Peace, love, and glitter!

HOW TO: (Discharge) Bleach and Dye a Black Dress
It started as a $22 dress from Target. Chloe explains how they made it using bleach gel and Tulip® One-Step Fashion Dye™. It process is called "discharge dying."
Tips for bleaching and dying black fabric:
- Not all black fabric will dye the same. Black fabrics come in a variety of bases - red, blue, etc.
- Don't expect even color after bleaching - some areas will turn rusty, others grey or red.
- Check on it to see how long to leave the bleach, some will change color faster than others. Thinner fabric hasd a chance of breaking, so watch out!
- Go with it! After you bleach, WASH the garment and then add the dye. either by squirting, soaking, spritzing, etc.
- Wash again before wearing.- TIP: Use the Tulip Fashion Graffiti Paint Cannon to spray your bleach!
Here are some links about discharging fabr
I have way too many black clothing items that could use some spiffing up, I'm excited to try this technique!

30 days of Glitter: Book reviews

Wow, three weeks have already passed since my novel came out. (LINK!)
My biggest fear was wondering if people would "get it", and secondly if it would translate outside of the craft world. And the Latina/o fiction world.
Thankfully the answer is a big YES to both of those! *Knock on wood* There have not been any scathing or bad reviews, and overall they are all positive. The ones that do have criticism are very valid and insightful. I've found them to be very helpful as I'm working on my next book!
Thank you so much to everyone who has bought and read the book, and those who left reviews too, I am so grateful! It puts a lot of pressure for the follow up, I hope it goes over just as well or better...*yikes!*
Have a super day, and go out and READ - any book, just read!!!
Here is a new review that just popped up today, and it made me so happy to read it.

My Thoughts
I was rather impressed with this novel. I found it funny, quirky, sweet, and rather inspiring. It was a beautiful story about love, friendship, and hope, all based around a love for crafting and the phenomenon that seems to be sweeping over our nation. Although I am not really a crafty person, I found myself inspired to think maybe I could give it a shot before reality actually set in again.
The relationship between the three women is interesting, but I actually found the character development of each woman much more interesting. The self-discovery process each women went through during the novel was fraught with missteps and problems, but the development of self-esteem, slow as it was, and the discovery of what each of them was capable of in their lives, was utterly fascinating. I found myself rooting for each one, but at the same time, I was also thinking about my own life as each one went through their own changes, and looking at my own life to see if maybe I wasn't achieving my own potential as well. I believe it was one of the reasons I began to blog as I felt I wasn't achieving enough in my own reviewing world; I needed more of an outlet and I needed to achieve something more. I could totally relate to what each of those women was feeling so it felt really personal to me. Naturally the real development of a true friendship always come with a series of tests, and all of these women have secrets that will test their friendship. When these secrets burst open one day, will the foundation of their friendship be strong enough to withstand the forces whipping around them or will they go their separate ways? Sorry folks, you will have to read the book to find out.
Verdict
By writing from the personal viewpoint of each character, you get to feel what each character is thinking and feeling and I really enjoyed that aspect of this novel. The transitions between characters were seamless and flowed beautifully. I especially enjoyed the Spanish influence in this novel and loved learning about the few Spanish cultural traditions that were mentioned. For those who do not have a background in Spanish, the author does include a glossary of Spanish terms to help the reader. I am definitely looking forward to future novels from Ms. Cano-Murillo.
For those who are interested in using this novel for their reading groups, the author includes a great Reading Group Guide, in both Spanish and English, for your use. Posted by Stephanie at 7:03 PM

30 Days of Glitter: Canvas Art

Supplies:Blank canvas
Crafty Chica Glitters

Tulip 3D Fashion Paint
, blackCrafty Chica Tango Markers

Decoupage medium (Collage Pauge
or Aleene's Paper Glaze
)Brushes
Typing paper (to catch glitter overflow)
Directions:
1. Draw your design on the canvas, the bigger and bolder the better.
2. Use a marker to color in the area you want to glitter. DO NOT color the entire picture - only the first area you want to glitter. For example, for the heart picture you see above, you would color the crown yellow and stop.
3. Use your brush to coat the yellow crown area (example) with decoupage medium, and then pour the gold glitter over it. Tap away excess. Move on to the th next section, staying in the lines you drew.
4. When the entire design is covered in glitter, use the Tulip 3D Fashion Paint to draw over the outline. This will make the design POP out. The picture at the top doesn't show how cool it looks, so just trust me, okay?
TIP: You don't have to glitter the whole thing. You can glitter the main design, and then color patterns in the background with the markers. You can also sub paint for markers!
Have fun!

WRITING: Get sketchy

I've been working away on my novel edits that are due next week. I'm barely halfway through and only have a few days left. Actually, nights, because I have my day job!
One of the issues I've had trouble with is pinning down my main character's outfits. She is a vintage fashionista and even though I can see her outfits and accessories in my head, I was having trouble translating them through my keyboard. This is where I unleashed my crafty side.
I sketched her outfits! Every time I come up to a scene where her outfit is supposed to make an impact and I don't have time to search through Polyvore or through magazines, I sketch my vision. It is much easier and faster - and more fun too!
Peace, love, and glitter!

Patrick, his mom and the kids came with me and we made the most of every minute there. Not only did I do a book reading and signing each day, I also led two Crafty Chica workshops. 1. Cut black cardstock into desired card size. Fold. Cut white cardstock smaller on all sides than black cardstock. Using an Aleene’s® Original Tacky Glue Stick, glue white cardstock into center of black card.
2. The front of the card will have three colors of glitter. Squeeze some Aleene’s® Paper Glaze onto foil and using paintbrush, paint a thick strip of Paper Glaze onto top 1/3 of white cardstock and immediately pour the first glitter color of your choice over the glaze. Press with your finger to set. Pour excess glitter onto scratch paper and return to glitter container for reuse.

30 Days of Glitter: Glittered Bottles

This is a project from my Crafty Chica Collection book, glittered soda pop bottles!
Here's how to do it:
Buy some glass pop bottles. I love the Mexican ones because they have raised designs or the labels printed directed on the glass. But you can also use flat paper label ones. It's all good!
You'll need acrylic craft paint, assorted brushes, and toothpicks for the micro spots.
You'll also need decoupage medium and ultra fine glitter in colors that match your paint colors.
First paint the entire bottle, and all the little details. Let it dry.
Next, working one area at a time, coat it in a thin layer of the decoupage medium and then pour on the glitter. Don't sprinkle the glitter - POUR it! If you sprinkle, you'll miss some spots. Trust me. Tap off the excess glitter and move on to the next spot.
Stop when it is all covered in glitter. Spray with varnish to seal it.
You could skip the paint part, but I like to do that step because it makes the glitter more vibrant. Red glitter on red paint, yah, baby, gimme more....
Now you can use your bottles as vases, centerpieces for a party, for a window sill, etc.
Peace, love, and glitter!

30 Days of Glitter: Glitter-in-a-Bottle Keychain

Today's project is all about making the most of the odds and ends in your art room. Once I cleaned out all my extras, I realized that I could put them all together to make something functional! I posted a picture earlier and got a few emails about it, so I thought I'd share the crafty recipe for it!
I picked up some blank dog tags. I glued down scraps of paper on them and then a picture, and then painted on accents, added micro stars, and glitter. Yes, even in the tiny space of a dog tag, you can cram in all those elements! I covered each one in resin.
And then I took some mini-bottles, filled them with glitter, attached a chain, added word beads and charms and some old-fashioned key rings. Now that I look at the picture, I think it would have been cool to add a bit of yarn too!
As far as the glitter in the little bottle...just think - you will have (contained) sparkle with you where ever you go! I actually glued the lid down. That way I can tell people "In case of emergency, break bottle of glitter!"
Supplies:
Keyring
Decorated dog tag, or another large picture charm of some sort.
2" of chain
mini-bottle filled with Crafty Chica™ Chunky Glitters™ (add a bit of glue inside the rim to hold it tight)
Eye pins
Beads
Needle nose pliers
Jump rings
Directions: Attach the dog tag. Attach the bottle to the chain, and add that to the keyring. Put the beads on the eye pin and use jump ring to attach!

Peace, love, and glitter!

OMG, Just got Michael DeMeng's new book: "Dusty Diablos!" Que cool!
30 Days of Glitter: Vrooom! Glittered cars!

I saw a clip of a Japanese car show and they had a Mercedes that was 100% covered in crystals. Of course I had to drop what I was working on to make something just like it. Problem - I didn't have enough crystals in my supplies. The horror! Well, they say glitter is the poor man's bling, so glitter it is!
These cars in my photo are Patrick's and DeAngelo's. The green car is the exact model Patrick owned when I met him. It was charcoal grey and we used to drive around in it on our early dates. After we were married and had rent to pay, he sold it. He has been heart-broken ever since. We always say someday we'll get another one, so until then, I got him this micro version. He keeps it on his art table for visual manifestation purposes... eee gads, and then I go and glitter it up! At first I worried he would be mad, but he told me loves it even more now!
These are covered in my Crafty Chica glitters
- Glamour Queen Green and Rockabilly Ruby and I added some Be Bop Black to dirty them up for a vintagey kind of look. I bet you are tired of reading me "talk" about my love of glitter - but I am so proud of these glitters, they are truly premium and every time I use them I am amazed at their dazzle. You can't tell by the picture, or even by the bottle, but once you actually use them, you can see the sly holographic effects in them.TO MAKE THESE:
Lightly sand the paint on the cars.
Use a fine liner brush and coat with Aleene's Original Tacky Glue, pour on the Crafty Chica™ Chunky Glitters™ ! Blow away excess. Let dry. For more sparkle power, add some mini-flat back crystals!
Here is the Japanese car show video - fast forward to the 1:21 mark to see the eye-popping crystal car.
Peace, love, and glitter!Kathy :-)

30 Days of Glitter: Artisan Perfume Oils!
This is an unexpected Glitter post!Elli, a reader, wrote me after she finished the novel and asked for my address so she could send a little sumthang-sumthang. I love surprises! Her package arrived yesterday and the biggest smile spread across my face when I opened it.
She created all-natural perfume oils inspired by Estrella, Chloe and Ofie (the characters in my book)! She came up with her own interpretation of the scents, based on the ladies' lives and personalities. I love these one-of-a-kind treasures so much and plan to wear them whenever I feel the spirit of one of the craftistas.
Here are Elli's inspirations for the scents she created (so creative!):
ESTRELLA (Star): Sparkling pink sugar crystals, dusky violet and sweet pea sprays and a Day of the Dead ofrenda covered in rose pedals.
OFELIA: Grainy vanilla lattes and a garden fresh bunch of mixed flowers, topped with a bit of the fastest hook in the land looping warm wool.
CHLOE: No-nonsense, ambitious woods and spices, sparkled up with a citrusy, glittery, mandarin kick. Smells even better when warmed by hot television lights.
