Rest in peace, Dad.

(Photo: David A. Cano)

Yesterday my dad went into ER because he had trouble breathing. The tumor on his lung had grown so big it was blocking his blood flow. It was determined that the cancer pills were not working. He asked about other alternatives even though we had been told there weren't any. He was not ready to give up. They kept him over night for observation. While we were waiting for the room, he joked "Come on, let's get out of here and go home!"

Finally, they secured a room - a brand new remodeled huge swanky hotel-suite looking thing. He loved the huge bed, he said it was very comfy. He was in so much pain, he deserved every ounce of comfort he could get. We helped him get situated and then kissed him goodnight and left. I prayed for him to please be released in the morning so he could go home.

He passed away peacefully in his sleep early this morning. My heart is broken, as is my family's but we are happy that he is not suffering anymore. He suffered a LOT these past few months, but did his best to push on. He left this life with so much dignity, he always stood tall and looked to see the best in people. He loved to make people laugh. He loved to create things with his hands. He loved a hardcore math problem. He loved make red chili sauce from scratch. He loved the Cardinals football team!

Most of all, he loved to be with his family.

I'm so proud to be his daughter.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone for your well wishes, they meant so much.

- Kathy

I'm so sorry for your loss. But yes, he is HOME.

Have you ever read the poem, The Ship? It's a little corny, but I find it so comforting.

I am standing on the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean.
She is an object of beauty and strength, and I stand and watch her until at length she is only a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky meet and mingle with each other. Then someone at my side exclaims, “There, she’s gone!”
Gone where? Gone from my sight, that is all. She is just as large in hull and mast and spar as she was when she left my side, and just as able to bear her load of living freight to the place of her destination. Her diminished size is in me, not in her.
And just at the moment when someone at my side says, “She’s gone,” there are other eyes watching for her coming and other voices ready to take up the glad shout, “There, she comes!”
And that is dying.

My dad went the same way. He had to go to the hospital a couple days, then passed away early in the morning after we had all spent the day before with him.

I know it's hard, but stay strong and be proud and count your blessings that you ever had such a wonderful father!

Kathy - I lost my father back in 2005 after a very long and painful illness (he had lung disease as well).

It is still one of the most profoundly sad events of my life. My heart goes out to you and your family.

I wish you sunshine, and sparkles, and joy and happy memories during this sad, troubled time.

May your dad enjoy crafting really awesome signs to help people get around his new place! (I imagine where he is, the paint never runs, the glitter stays in one place, and the glue dries quickly!)

Ah Kathy,
I am so sorry to hear about your father. I was thinking about him last night after your tweets yesterday and hoping that he would make it through the night but I guess it was not to be. He is in a better place now and free from pain. My dad died from prostate cancer a year and a half ago so I know how much sadness you and your family are experiencing now but try to focus, as you did above, on the wonderful memories you have of him and let those memories comfort you.
