Chubby Girl Delight: Tie-Dye Inspired Cupcakes (Contest too!)

Life is too short not to use food coloring in cake batter. I'd seen these crazy kaleidoscope cupcake ideas floating around online and wanted to give it a try. It took a bit longer than making normal cupcakes, but it was worth it!

Here are the supplies you need. Make sure to get primary colors AND new the new neons that McCormick Spices has out now.

You'll make the white cake batter and then sort it into bowls. Add the color to the shade you want.
Spoon into the cups. Next time I will use a toothpick to swirl the colors. I only used four colors, next time i'll go with six or even eight!

This is a great project for 4th of July!

CONTEST! Leave a comment and share your DREAM cupcake from your favorite bakery, or your favorite cupcake experience. I'm sharing mine below!

Peace, love, and glitter!
Kathy :-)

P.S. Check out my new book and product line!

Hey Kathy, those cupcakes came out great! If you really want to put them over the top (and I bet you do), try icing them with this rainbow technique: http://www.chicaandjo.com/2008/09/18/colorful-swirled-cupcakes/

  3. Lovin' the cupcakes. I think a red/white/blue version would be super for 4th of July! :)

As for my fave cupcake experience - takes me back to childhood when my mom made cupcakes in ice cream cones and suprised me at school on my birthday. I still make those sometimes today for my kiddos :)

  4. I love experimenting with cupcakes! I have especially loved playing with cookie cupcakes, but this post is most appropriate for the Crafty Chica crowd:

There, you will find directions for making Loteria cupcake picks - Lots of fun, and you cannot (yet) find these in stores! Enjoy!

  5. Those cupcakes look great...I would love to try that technique. I think some red, white and blue ones would be adorable for the 4th as well. As far as my dream cupcake....it's just a simple devils food cupcake with cream cheese frosting from a local bakery in my town. My two favorite things are chocolate and cream cheese so when I have them both together it's just bliss!
PS...I would love that prize pack...it looks great :)

  6. I just saw this rainbow technique on another blog the other day & bookmarked it so I can try it out in the future! I love the cappacino cupcake from Crumbs. My bf surprised me with them when we celebrated my bday together for the first time. It was lovely!

  8. Nice story! I'm a serious chocolate eater and a baker too. So I like my cupcakes as chocolatey as possible. Moist chocolate cake, rich chocolate frosting on top, and lots of it. I currently get my quick fix at Hey Cupcake, in Austin, TX. They've got a "double" that is really good, and it's not tiny like some bakeries' cupcakes are either. It's big and chocolatey and covered in lots of frosting. YUM. I'm gonna have to go get one. I think they only thing that might make it better is a creamy coconut filling, sort of like one of my fave candy bars, a Mounds. That would be awesome! I'm gonna have to come up with the recipe for that now for sure. Oh! And Hey Cupcake will give you a shot of whipped cream right in the middle of your cake if you want. How cool is that?

Loved hearing your cupcake story! How cute and funny! I recently discovered my favorite cupcake: yellow cake with strawberry jello mixed in the cake mix; filled with strawberry and whipped cream then topped with more whipped cream. I am also excited to bake coconut cupcakes this weekend and look forward to sharing my stories with cupcake lovers!

  10. Kathy, I love your cupcake story and your tie-dyed cupcakes. I don't have any stories about cupcakes like you, but I do love them. When I go to our local grocery story I'm always checking out the cupcakes and usually end up buying some. Thanks again for sharing your wonderful story.

  15. My memorable cupcake experience was back in my teen years. I would make different cupcakes every week & have my friends try them at our lunch table at school. I usually received compliments & requests for seconds, although one time a friend said "Um, you have flour chunks in these cupcakes. Oh, geez, I shouldn't have said that *claps hand over mouth*"

  16. My 3yo will have so much making colored cupcakes. If she had her way, they'd all be pink. Which is why I no longer have any red food coloring.

My sister bought some delicious mini-cupcakes from a local place, Cake Love around Valentine's Day. They were delicious!

  17. Oh how funny your story is! I have had this love affair with cup cakes for as long as I can remember. It usually consumes most of my free time at work, looking for new cupcakes, looking at all the desiger cupcakes. There are so many flavors that I just need to try. My favorite would have to be chocolate filled with peanut butter. OMG to die for!

As for the cupcakes, I really liked it when my friends bought chocolate ones (my favorite!) for my birthday.

  21. if you ever go to portland, you HAVE to go to st cupcake, they make the most incredible cupcakes. gorgeous, and super yummy! all of the cupcakes are awesome, but pumpkin spice is especially amazing - which is weird, cause i'm usually all about the sweet sugary goodness with cupcakes!

you can order them online too!

  22. MMMMM! My dream cupcake . . . there are so many. Do I really have to pick just one? It would definitely involve chocolate, but maybe in the frosting rather than the cake. Okay. Let's say it would be MOIST marble cake with chocolate ganache frosting and a couple of fresh raspberries thrown in there somewhere. YES!
