T-shirt rug in progress & other weekend adventures

(rug in progress)

Last week at this time we were driving home from Fresno to Phoenix. We were hoping to make it home around 1 a.m., instead it was 3:30 a.m. A 10 hour road trip! Patrick and I took turns sleeping, and we listened to a book on tape (until the sex scene came on and the kids freaked out, LOL!).

Last year at this time, we were frantically repainting the house and speed-stuccoing the fireplace to get ready to film the first batch (12 episodes!) of "Crafting With the Chica" for Lifetime TV - AND I was in the process of making a hundreds plus pieces of jewelry for Target.com.

So the fact that I'm sitting here tonight, nibbling on an oatmeal cookie, typing while wearing my "relax" slogan t-shirt is a wonderful treat! It's still pretty hectic though. Lots of big projects happening. Tomorrow a reporter from Phoenix Magazine is coming over to interview us for a story!!

This is really 'full circle' for us because the last time they featured us, we were in the early stages of our business. Check out this picture, DeAngelo was a toddler! The photographer wanted a pop art Joseph, Mary and baby feel. It came out super cute.

If you look close at the picture, you can see my use of Loteria on everything - back then the games were VERY hard to find and no one else in town was using them. (Who knew 14 years later, we would have our own very own version of the game!)

You can see all my polymer clay jewelry, my safety pin bracelets, and little bit of bead work. This is when we were selling our art to hundreds of stores all over the country. And I was pregnant with Maya! I truly do not know how we did it all...

Anyway - back to NOW... on Tuesday, a photog from the Arizona Daily Star is visiting for two separate pieces. We went into lock down and Patrick's mom came over today to help us scrub the house down. DeAngelo repainted all the kitchen cabinets, Patrick fixed up the front lawn, I managed to get some art work done too.

Noticed how I phrased that? Not "artwork", but art work. As in work that is art.

Our Heard Museum exhibit opens in about four weeks and we are on the home stretch - in fact, we are sprinting! Not panicking (yet), just sprinting. I'm almost done with an area rug made from t-shirts and placemats that is for the living room. Don't got by the picture, it iwll look much better than that when it's done!

I still have a couch to paint, and four hot pink vinyl chairs to trick out in oilcloth and rhinestone trim. I can hardly wait to dive into those projects!!!

One of my other projects is a super-sized headboard for a bed. The whole theme of the room is soft and dreamy - kinda Frida-meets-Bollywood-meets-guardian angels. For the headboard, I want to draw and paint the angels, but I'm still rough and stiff with my illustration skills. I'm stuck in the "face front and center" mode and need to break out of that corner. The easy route would be to ask Patrick to do draw my angels, and they would be better than anything I could do, but this whole room is my vision and I want to conquer my fears and do it myself. Flaws and all!

My friend Yoli and Krissi told me about the class they are digging from Suzi Blu. They are having so much fun, learning so much, that I decided to join in! Last night I signed up for the Suzi Blu Les Petite Dolls online workshop!

Suzi is beyond amazing. She makes these beautiful, playful, artful videos that are so uplifting and inspiring. The class lessons are perfect because they are online videos, and she walks you through each and every pencil stroke and even every boo-boo too...I've only watched Lesson One so far and I'm already working on eyes, face structure, and body gesturing. Just what I needed!

Here is one of my favorite Suzi Blu videos. She makes it look so easy!

Crafty Chica Art Cruise 2009!

We're all set to go!

Crafty Chica Cruise 2009!
DATE: March 15-19, 2009
DEPARTS: from San Diego
WHERE: Catalina and Ensenada (one day at each town, one full day at sea)
COST: $539 inside cabin. $589 ocean view cabin (based on double occupancy)

Cost is lower for spouses/people who do not want to craft.

INCLUDES: Everything! Room, food, tips, entertainment, two cocktail parties, craft supplies/kits for five workshops, personal instruction, tote bag with giveaways, and much more! Plus there will be three bonus mini-workshops for $5 each.

As far as the classes, I will have those listed soon. I do know we will have a jewelry, fabric/sewing, assemblage, paper arts/scrapbooking, and Day of the Dead. Each workshop will have the theme of "art de la soul" - self empowerment, making visual representations of your life goals, and discovering something new about yourself!

The last two cruises were full of laughs and newfound creativity. We crafted our brains out, and then went shopping for cool treasures in Mexico - and then came back and used them in our art projects. Many of us still stay in touch! Check out the label below to see all the pictures and links! This cruise is a great way to connect with your sister, mom, hubby, cousins, and friends.

And why not go by yourself? It's also a bold way to step outside of your normal routine and meet new people.

My favorite quote from this recent cruise was from a sweet lady named Mary Pat. The first day she said "I've never used glitter or such bright colors!" By the end of the cruise, she was like, "Who has the hot pink paint? I need more glitter!"

SWAPS: We will be making two swap projects as well.

Students are encouraged (but not required) to bring personal/favorite supplies, scrap fabric, trims, etc.

Aside from crafting, there will be shopping in Catalina and Ensenanda, great entertainment, a full casino, a spa on board the 'Elation' ship (cost is separate). We will have a 24-hour craft room. This year our dining room is connected to our craft room. And we will have better lighting!

Sign up here at SeaCruises.com. - All it takes is $100 to hold your spot now, and the next $100 is due in September and then the rest is due in December.

Any questions? Shoot me an email!

A crafty sister in need

While I was out of town last week, a very popular local (Mesa) artist and her husband were badly burned in a crazy, awful airplane crash.

I haven't had the pleasure of meeting the talented Stephanie Nielson yet, but I've admired her famous silhouettes ever since I saw them! Here is a really cute Q&A with "Nie" from Cookie Mag.

I found out about the accident on Jaimee Rose's blog and there are all kinds of auctions going on to raise money for the family. Thank God they are alive, but they have a tough road ahead of them and every little bit helps. Here is the story about it, and here is a link to the Benefit Blog where you can shop or attend events to help raise funds.

I'm going to add the button to my sidebar right now and I'll be putting something in one of the auctions as well. In the mean time, say your prayers for Stephanie and her family!

Why "Plan B" rocks

We all have our goals of scoring the dream job, writing the best book, landing a big business deal or creating the perfect piece of artwork.

We have our sights set and devoted to Plan A - that first idea, sketch, sentence or word being PERFECT. Maybe even when it comes to dating, eating at a restaurant, or buying a book to read on a plane. But what happens when Plan A falls through? Do you freak out? Cuss? Whine? Eat the Chips Ahoy you bought for Junior's lunch box?

I'm here to tell you Plan B is the way to go. Here's why. A few years ago while working as an entertainment reporter, I had an editor who would always chop off the first sentence or paragraph of my stories. It used to drive me flippin' crazy because I had spent so much time writing and rewriting that lede, slaving away to make it sizzle.

I wanted him to open my story, read the first sentence, and publicly admire my innovation! Instead, his fingers tap danced across his keyboard to highlight and delete. Can you say humbling?

Finally, one day I asked him why. He explained that most of the time, the gold is what comes after that first idea for the following reasons:

- The first try comes with the pressure or stress of trying too hard to be clever or cute.

- The first idea is just a warm up.

- If you think your first idea is brilliant, chances are someone else has already thought of it.

- Sometimes it just doesn't click, kind of like that first pancake on the griddle. It's always a little wonky.

- There is a good chance it is a cliché.

- Often, it is the universe working in your favor, shielding you from future trouble. (He didn't tell me that one, but I'm telling you)

I stopped pouting and let it sink in. He was right! I started going through my past stories and had an Oprah "Ah-ha!" moment. It clicked in my brain that by the time you get past the stress and energy of going for Plan A, you're relaxed and able to find a comfy groove. That's when the best stuff happens!

When I used to interview celebrities, Plan A would be to ask them about their love lives. Duh! They weren't about to discuss that! So I used to dig around their bios and come up with offbeat topics I knew other reporters wouldn't ask about. That is how I found out that Kate Hudson loves to scrapbook with lots of glitter!

Sometimes it happens organically. Other times you have to push yourself to come up with (and embrace) the next round.

I eventually applied the concept to my craft designs. As with writing, it worked like magic! Even today, every project I think of, I'll jot or sketch a few ideas. Even when I think I have a great list, I always, always, always whack off the first one or two. Sure enough, I've seen repeatedly those are the ones others have done first. This process forces us to think outside the obvious. Sometimes I don't do it enough because I'll see the work of other people who went to Plan K or P and the end result is killer - beyond anything I could have thought of!

It also works with marketing plans. Write that press release or pitch. Find a kernel of something catchy in it and then rewrite it with that as the focus. I guarantee it will be more exciting and fresh.

Try it with:
- shopping
- blog headlines
- designing clothing
- making crafts
- naming your business/creating a logo
- choosing where to sell your artwork
- the way you put your jewelry or make up on
- using your art supplies
- the way you approach people
- slogans
- personal or company mission statements
- color combinations

It is still important to unleash all your heart and soul into Plan A of course, but if it doesn't pan out - be confident it's because something more fitting is just around the corner.

Thank you, Scott, for inspiring this post!

NOTE: I didn't even mean to do this, but look at the top of this blog post. You can easily remove that first graph!

Do you have a Plan B story or thought? Share it in the comments!!

P.S. Need more inspiration on this topic? Check out my friend Margot's blog post today! I love it!

PROJECT: Dress Shirt Laptop Sleeve

I once purchased a vintage men’s Guayabera shirt off of eBay, and loved it. But it wasn’t exactly flattering to my figure because of its boxy shape. Another item on my bummer list: I needed a vertical laptop bag for traveling. Something I could easily whip out of my carry-on when passing thorough airport security. Rather than scour the retail aisles, I decided to use my beloved shirt. I know it seems crazy to cut up a perfectly good item of clothing, but what good was it sitting in my closet? Now I can enjoy it on a regular basis. That is what a crafty life is all about, tailoring everyday objects to our personal style!
If you don’t have a shirt you are willing to snip, check out your local thrift store.

Dress Shirt Drawstring Laptop Bag
Supplies:
1 men’s dress shirt
½ yard of contrasting fabric for lining
Sewing machine
1 yard of cording
Chopstick and clear tape
Directions: Determine if you want your bag to hold your laptop horizontal or vertical. Measure your laptop, and then cut the front and back of the shirt so it extends two-inches around the sides and bottom, and 5 inches from the top. Toss the excess. Now cut two pieces of lining to match.
Take the front and back of the cut shirt, line them up face in, and straight stitch around the sides and bottom. Add another row of stitches. Repeat for the lining. Insert the lining, face sides in, inside the shirt. Line up the inside corners at the bottom, and the side seams so they match. Pin the top raw edges in on both sides and sew a straight stitch all the way around. On one side, cut two snips (3/4” each) at the top and sew over the raw edges. Now fold the top of the bag outward to create a 1” hem all the way around, pin in place and sew. This is the casing for the drawstring. Fold the cording in half, take the folded end, tape it around the end of the chopstick and feed it through the casing. Tie a knot at the end of the cording.
Variation: If you want to embellish it more, add embroidered accents, patches, vintage buttons, etc.

The aftermath!

I'm so sorry I haven't had time to blog. Normally I keep it up everyday, but ever since coming home from the trip, I have been backlogged with assignments, emails, phone calls, errands and so forth. I do have a lot of supah-swell things coming up, so please, please, please sit tight while I get everything in order!! Thank you a hundred times over!!!

Have you tried Face Your Manga yet? It's sweeter than edible glitter and just as exciting. I used it to make these pictures of my kids. I swear each one looks just like them!

Some of the crafty Fresno crew!

Fresno event!

Meet Jess. She is a cabaret entertainer. And she loves Crafty Chica
stuff!!!

Bought these at a truck stop.

An espresso shot disguised as a creamer! Perfect for driving home
tonight to stay awake!

Correction on today's address!

The Michaels store we will be at from 3-5 today is:

7400 N. Blackstone Ave, Fresno.

See you there!

Sent from my iPhone

Our last day!

Sacramento gig: There were signs!!!

After hearing about our little ChaCha's puppies, we are ready to bring the sparkle home. Before we do, we are happy to make our last stop in Fresno, which is my second home because I stay there one week every month to work on the line at Duncan Enterprises!

The week has been amazing! Special thanks to all the wonderful La Quinta managers who let us have our rooms early so we could rest up after the long drive each day, we really appreciate it! And I liked how every time we asked what to do in that town, tehy would not only give us ideas, but also directions!

We wrapped up Sacramento last night, huge, wild, party - in a crafty sense. The event manager cheered us on in the loud speaker and all the crowded screamed and hollered. We stayed until the store almost closed. Afterwards, Patrick and I went with our friends Krissi and Yoli to eat. We were so cheery and revved up while we drove that we didn't even notice we took a wrong exit on the freeway. We had to drive about 30 minutes in the wron g direction until we were able to swing around and find our way back.

Now we are packing up in the room. We'll be at the Federal St Michaels store from 3-5 p.m. today and then we are hititng the road for home. I can hardly wait to hold ChaCha in my arms and bury my face in her fluffy white fur.

Thank you again to everyone who came out! hope to see more of you today in Fresno!

Sad news...

The doctor from the animal hospital called to let us know ChaCha had
two puppies this morning, but they were both stillborn.

We are very, very sad, but very relieved that she is OK, just tired.
We'll be getting her fixed soon, which is what we meant to do in the
first place!

Looking forward to going home!

Cute patch!

Assistant manager folding his drapes!

He was so cute! He actually took them down from his house to use for
the tablecloth! Love it! I love anything that has a fun, personal
story to it :-)

It was so crowded, people spilled into the aisles.

The menu!

Yoli's pre-event party for us!

My dear friend and crafty amiga para vida, Yoli Manzo, had the most
off-the-hook lunch party for us today! Grilled paninis, salads,
desserts and yummy sangria made by her mom. Krissy's Stitchery,
PeptoGirl, Rain's Embellishments, La Mala, Sharon and Marcella were
all there and brought goodies.

Inspiration Angel by Yoli Manzo!

San Jo rocks!

There was a tight fit at last night's Michaels'event. Patrick and I were about five minutes late (wrong turn!), and when we entered, there was a sea of happy faces waiting for us. I never had a chance to sit down, which I didn't mind at all. The manager and staff were so cool, and they even had us sign the event poster because they were going to have it framed and mounted for the store! They even had cookies too!

Some ladies during the night kept saying "I'll see you later tonight!" and I was thinking, "Huh?"

And then our friend and Crafty Chica cruiser, Corky, gave me this look:

Ahhh...crafty indeed! She planned a little post-event reception at her sister's house! Before the event ended, Corky sprinted out and bought us carne asada burritos for dinner and then led us through the San Jose streets to the party. It turned out to be one of the best gatherings ever. We loved chatting with all these crafty, creative women about art, life, traveling and food too. Corky is the best!

This is her sister who hosted the reception. She said she isn't crafty, but all kinds of accents in her house proved otherwise. Look at this idea - she turned a set of cabinets into a window/shadowbox display in her kitchen. And she is currently making a huge flagstone mosaic in front of her house. I am so excited to get home and do the same at our house! (Note to Gina, Darian, Melissa and Cesar: AFTER our Heard stuff is done, of course!)

We came home around 11 ish and crashed on our La Quinta beds! We just barely read the fine print to learn that many locations allow small animals. Good thing we didn't know that before we left - we would have brought Chacha!

Speaking of her, here is a picture of her at the doggie maternity ward, where skilled technicians are watching her until we get home. Doesn't she look soooo offended that she is there, and not home?

And here is Bootsie. Doesn't he look so sad, that we are still gone? He looks so hurt that he can't even put up those Chihuahua radar ears. Don't get me started on the dogs. I'll never stop!

Well, gotta jam. We are leaving for Sac-town (Sacramento) in a few minutes, where the enchanting Yoli from Sacred Snatch is hosting a BBQ for us with some of the local crafters! Then we are off to the night's Michaels event and tomorrow we wrap up in Fresno!

San Jose: tote & CC necklace idea

The best carne asada burrito I ever had!

Thanks to our friend, Corky!

San Jose: Las Olgas!

Seriously! They are longtime best friends and they both craft!! Aren't
they so cute?

San Jose

San Jose!

This lady colored her jeans with Crafty Chica Markers. Even though I
have chubby legs, I want to do the same!

We just had to stop here!

On our way to San Jose!

Yesterday was spent driving all along the coast on the 101 freeway. We woke up late, and hit the road around noon. Special thanks to my friend Stacia who gave us great tips on
California driving! We had gorgeous scenery to keep us company - the beaches, vineyards...and more beaches and vineyards...

We stopped for a late lunch in San Luis Obispo (cute town!) because somehow I had the impression that Paso Robles was only 6 minutes away. Um, wrong. We were back on the road at 4:45, praying we would make it to the hotel and then Michaels on time.
We found the La Quinta hotel, the staff quickly checked us in, and we came in to find a large, wall mounted flat screen TV, and California King bed and a separate lounge area. They even have free wine tastings here!

The kids begged to stay in the room while we went to the event, so we let them be little lounge lizards and enjoy the swanky atmosphere. Patrick and I made it to Michaels with 10 minutes to spare.

It was a smaller crowd than Los Angeles but each person was just as happy. Here is a lady who bought the sugar skull iron-on and the shirt earlier in the day, went home and embellished it and then wore it to meet me. She filled in all the spaces with glitter and sewn on sequins. This is really cool because the iron-on is designed with a flocked base - so when you iron it, it is raised. Then you can fill it in with embroidery, paint, glitter, etc...

Another nifty feature is that you can actually take a small pair of scissors and snip off any portion of the iron-on before you use it, in case you want to iron it on something else. For example, you can snip out the word "amiga" inside the ribbon below and write in your own word!

I remembered one person who came on Tuesday that I fogrot to mention! Stefanie Girard from Craftside!

Well, we are up early today, ready to hop back on the 101 to San Jose!

Paso Robles-our first guest!

This is Joan and she made this shirt today using the Crafty Chica
Skull Iron on. She decorated it with sequins and glitter!!! She wore
it to the event tonight :-)

Sparkling in Los Angeles

I'm warning you this will be a long post, but not as long as the day we had yesterday. It was one of the best days of my life! Jam-packed with lots of cool people and memories. There was so much going on that I didn't even have time to snap a lot of pictures.

We woke up at 6:30 a.m. and headed out to L.A. from San Diego. By 10:30 we were at Olvera Street, doing some retail damage at the shops. I bought Indian Bindi stickers to use in my collages! One of the stores, Olvera's Candle Shop, used to carry our artwork in the early 90s. The owner happened to come by and recognized us! Not by our faces, but by my purse and jewelry. I signed copies of my books and we chatted about the crazy, wonderful explosion of Latino crafting that is happening across the country right now. Her shop, and many others there, are filled with clever, handmade items, all with a hip Latin twist to them.

Here is a dress from one of the shops. All that work is done with sequins!! We stopped to eat at La Golodrina, the oldest restaurant in L.A. (we were told), and had the mariachis play "Un Poño de Tierra" (A Handful of Dirt). It is a ballad about only taking a handful of dirt with you when you die, none of the material things matter in the end. This lady sang it so powerful that Maya began to cry, and then of course I did too!

We met with Rosemond Perdue Cranner from Bungalow 3, and brainstormed new webisode ideas. After that we raced off to my friend Kerith's house for my mask making session. Artist Peter Harper (Ben's brother) is doing a show of all different bronze masks on different kinds of people and I was invited to be one of them. The pictures speak for themselves!

Once we were done, there was no time to go to the hotel before our Michaels event. So with Vaseline coated all around my hairline (I have so much hair no one could notice), and a quick makeup job, we were on our way!

The place was PACKED! There was a line that lasted for an hour and the display was cleaned out by the end of the night. People even brought me gifts! It was a star-studded crafty event. Among the crowd were some friends from MySpace (Red and Janice), Blogger (Carol B), the cruise (Belen and Jesse), Chicken Soup for the Latino Soul (Zulmara!) etc. Cyndi from Santa Clarita Craft Lab, Sew Darn Jenny (Ryan), Cathy (Callahan) of California, The Craft Whore (Stacy McQueen), Lola y Lola (Miriam and Yessenia), Meryl Butler of 90 Minute Quilts, and even movie star Jackie Guerra!! Gosh, I hope I didn't miss anyone!

And drumroll...even Frieda Lay from Chico's Angels came and bought stuff!!!

There were gobs more people (lots of kids and teens too!) and I'm so thankful everyone showed up to make it such a fun night. The team at Michaels was awesome too, they talked with the customers too and helped us with any little thing we needed.

People always ask me if I feel like a crafty rockstar, and I don't let those thoughts go past my ears. I admit, last night I had a teeny feeling of a glittery cape and platform KISS shoes - only because people are just so cool and kind and gracious. But then I realized that this is happening to me for a bigger reason. I know so many people from different genres and groups and it's my job to hook them all up to help them move ahead in their careers. Art makes the world a better place. So I worked hard during the night introducing everyone to eachother and I got goosebumps to see everyone chatting and hugging by the time we left.

One thing We ALL agreed on - we are planning to do another Safe Sparkle Ellen Rally this fall!

We stayed until the store was about to close and then a few of us went out to La Cabinita to eat a late dinner.

It was 11 p.m. by the time we arrived to La Quinta. This location is right by the airport, and it is super swanky and mod. We noted its coolness, dumped our suitcases on the floor, and dove on the beds. They were sooooo comfy, we all konked out within minutes. Well, except me. I did shower first to get that Vaseline off my hair!

We just came back from the yummy complimentary breakfast downstairs (whoever invented that idea - I *heart* you).

We are packing up and heading out to Paso Robles Michaels tonight - 6-8 p.m., hope to see you there!

Thank you again to everyone who I came in contact with yesterday! I will never forget that day!

San Diego adventures

(Pamela with her picks!)
Today was the first day of the California leg of the Crafty Chica Spread the Sparkle Tour! Doesn't that sound so Amazing Race? I'm totally making it bigger than it sounds, (AZ and CA are the only legs, so far...) but I can't help it! We had an excellent day!

We woke up at 4:30 a.m. in Phoenix, and by 11, we were frolicking on Mission Beach in San Diego. Do you know how long it has been since I frolicked on anything? We checked into La Quinta Inn and Suites at 3, and the assistant manager was soooo sweet. He told me they were really happy to be part of the chica excitement, and that he had even checked out my web site.

At that moment, I thought "EEeek!" I was standing before him with beach hair (translation: major fuzzy bob, wide enough to hide a small animal) and sunburned cheeks, my face free of any cosmetic enhancements.

"I look better in pictures," I joked. "I just came from the beach..." I said, raking my fingers through my wirey locks. I should say "trying" because my fingers got stuck at one point.

He smiled bright, like he didn't even notice, and said, "Good for you, I hope you had a great time! Good luck tonight!"

I knew then it was going to be a happy night. We had lots of Michaels shoppers and the display had sold so much that the clerks had to spread out the product to fill the space. They told me that as soon as they put it all up a few weeks ago, certain items were gone in ONE day.

"You're reaching new customers we haven't had before," one of them said.

Aside from hanging with all my favorite friends, one of the highlights was a girl and guy who walked in, and the guy saw the display and goes "Crafty Chica? What is that?"

They walked over to see the products and told me how they were into Day of the Dead. The guy bought the Divine Inspiration Empowerment Guardian and I think the girl bought the Inspiration Cards.

Well, I'm going to flop on this comfy bed (kudos to La Quinta, the King Suite rocks!). I'm going to kiss my pillows tonight!

Tomorrow is Los Angeles!

One more cool thing happening tomorrow...OK, you know Ben Harper, the musician? Well his brother, Peter, is an artist and he is going to make a bronze cast of my face for his upcoming art exhibit!!! I'll post pictures!

Meet Lucy, our Spread the Sparkle mascot.

I'd like to introduce you to Lucy. I made her in a mad rush last week to show off my purple glitter and she has kinda become the mascot for the tour.

If I can find a safe way to pack her, I'm going to bring her to California with me. Will it look weird if I go through airport security with a purple glittered bulldog bank? It's not like she bites or anything...

I would like to give her away at the end of the tour, so maybe I'll do a drawing at the events. Or maybe I'll give her to someone at the last stop in Fresno. I have no idea yet, I just thought of it! I need to get to bed right now, so if any of you have a good pitch of how I can give her away, let me know!

She's heavy (ceramic), and is about 12-14" tall. I think she is a drag queen bulldog. Not to be crude, BUT I remember glittering over her huevos, and raising my eyebrow... Seriously!

Needed: Divine inspiration.

Tonight I made a list of all the things I have to finish in the next six weeks. I stopped at 172, just so I wouldn't faint, cry, or break out in hysterical cackles and frighten my children.

There is just so much going on (I asked for all of it, so I am not complaining!) all at the same time. Where did the summer go? Not only do I have my full-time Crafty Chica duties, which I love, I also have dozens of projects to complete for our upcoming Heard Museum exhibit, which I also love. And then I have my upcoming novel, which I also love, that I'll be revising with my book editor.

And I forgot, we are painting 180 centepieces for the Profiles of Success luncheon again this year. (If any crafty AZ peeps want to come to my house and make a party out of it, I bet we can knock them all out in one night. I will provide food, entertainment, and a lifetime of good karma!) Yes, I love this too!

Next week, we leave for Califas to promote the Crafty Chica line at Michaels stores - I LOVE, love, love that as well!!! I'm excited because all four of us (the fams) are going on this once-in-a-lifetime road trip called the Spread the Sparkle Tour. Tomorrow I have to get us all packed, touch up my hair, pack the samples, finish and pack orders, write two craft columns, and answer emails.

ChaChaWe are taking our dog, ChaCha, to the doggie maternity ward in case she goes into labor while we are gone. (Our housesitters were a bit hesitant out about maybe having to deliver puppies, I don't blame them!)

Once we return, I'll be on high speed, with laser beam focus on completing all my projects. I have a plan. This is how I can make the most of my day and not waste time:

- Turn off the computer.
- Turn off the TV and leave the radio on.
- Make a week's worth of meals ahead of time and heat them up as we go along.
- Have Patrick hide my iPhone from me for at least six hours during each day.

Even though it is going to be a lot of work without much sleep, I'm super proud of each and every task. I'm ready to rock and roll. *Deep breath.*

This isn't the first time I've been in this spot. A long time ago, Patrick and I used to make our home decor and jewelry art for places like Bloomingdale's and Hallmark, plus indie shops like Serendipity 3 in NYC. I'm talking gluing, basecoating, accent painting, varnishing, packing and shipping hundreds of items a week. And all the paperwork too. We would wake up at 5:30 a.m. and work all through the wee hours of the morning, and we still never caught up. We used to have a clipboard of orders about half an inch thick. We had 50-60 different items on our line (bad idea), and each order was like "nine dozen of this", "three dozen of that, no red please..."

Deangelo and Maya were only toddlers then!

If we could survive that and keep it all going, we can handle this, no prob. Although I am soooo happy that I came up with the idea of the Decorate Your Own Empowerment Guardians. I don't mean to sound like I'm pushing them on you. I'm serious. As serious as spilling paint water on a finished canvas!

I swear, up until right now, I thought these were so cute and clever to offer a little lift for anyone who needed it. Now, people? I'm cradling this Divine Inspiration baby to my heart - and then I'm using duct tape to strap her on my shoulder!

Every little bit helps!

Patrick and I with the crafty crew from Michaels corporate!!

They are so supportive and awesome! They made every event super
special for everyone!

Great turn out last night!

My Internet is down this morning so I'm blogging from my now even more

night. Patrick and I arrived early and there was already a small group
of peeps waiting. People kept coming all night! Here are my crafty
homegirls, Lolita and Cherry Pop from Las Bandidas del Arte, and my
friend Stacia. She even snuck in her 2-pound Chihuahua, Coco! Yup, it
was a wild and crafty crowd alright! Thanks everyone! Today is the
last AZ event. It's in Tempe at 11-1. See you there!

Sublime Stitching meets Crafty Chica!

Back in the day when I had first put up my site, Jenny Hart of Sublime Stitching wrote me and told me about her new site and her signature embroidery patterns. We helped each other out by linking up and to this day, we are crafty hermanas por vida (friends for life!).

So tonight when I saw this young girl shopping for Crafty Chica, I noticed her purse - it was embellished with Sublime Stitching sugar skulls! She let me snap a picture. This is true crafty networking and friendships coming full circle!

This is how we spread the sparkle when the day is done.

Three cheers for the Italian Margarita!

Anthony loves Crafty Chica goodies!

This is my little cousin Anthony who started first grade this week. He went into the Peoria Crossing Michaels today to see me, and picked out some red glitter and a frame for his craft projects.

He looked around the store, saw the unfinished kids chairs and stools, and then ran to his mom (my cousin) and asked her to buy him "a new naughty chair".

My cousin goes, "You want a new naughty chair? Hey, wait a second - you shouldn't want to sit in a naughty chair!"

We cracked up! Isn't he soooo cute???

Spreading the sparkle: First night is a hit!

We had a nice, steady crowd tonight at the first stop on the Spread the Sparkle Tour! Lots of friends and family arrived and hung out to cheer us on and shop, shop, shop. Many items are sold out and it is only the second week into the display. I'm jumping for joy at the response! The coolest aspect is that people don't just buy one item, they buy two or three items, sometimes four and five, which is exactly how we designed the products - to work with each other!

Thank you to everyone who came out, it means a lot to have that kind of support! And special thanks to the team at Michaels! Wow, they are on top of every detail to make sure everything is a success. All the way from corporate to the store managers and employees. I love hearing the employees talk about the things they like to make, and even better, seeing them shop in the store. It's nice to know they are very passionate about their jobs! It proves that crafting isn't just a hobby, it is a lifestyle! Craftaholics, unite!!!

There was so much positive energy tonight, I'm really looking forward to the rest of the tour! I totally want to go into every detail, but I am so sleepy right now. I signed a tall stack of books, gave away bobbleheads, Mexican fortune cookies and posed for pictures with my crafty comadres. I'm going to crash and recharge my batteries for tomorrow.

Here is where we will be! Come on out!! more goodies await those who visit!

Crafty Chica Loteria Bracelet

I made this today using the Crafty Chica Loteria game! The game is $8.99 and it comes with 18 playing tablets, plus a full deck for the caller. There are 55 pictures ot cut up and use in art projects. I made this bracelet using the pictures, wood pieces, and jump rings.

VIDEO: Ombre tie-dye technique!

I am really, really, really embarrassed to admit that I did not know what the term "ombre" meant until recently.

Every time I would go to Fresno at Duncan, I would hear the designers and trend team talking about it. Ombre this, and ombre that. At first I thought they were speaking Spanish about hot men.

I Wiki-ed it, giggled, and thought "Oh, it is a card game!"

But then I wondered why they would all be so excited to play cards when there are crafts products to invent and test. So just to be sure, I cross-referenced, and Googled it, and was like, "Duh! This is a fashion art manufacturer, it has to do with fashion."

I should have just asked, but oh well!

From FabSugar:

Ombre

n. A French term meaning "shaded." Usually a multicolored stripe, with colors graduating from light to dark. The color effect is woven into the fabric. Generally produced by arranging different tones in the warp.

Now I can finally sleep tight, because not only do I know what it means, I also know how to create the look. Duncan has just released an excellent how-to video on mastering the ombre technique with Tulip One-Step Fashion Dyes!

Crafty shout outs!

It's due time for a new batch of crafty shout outs! These are over-the-top achievements by people I know and admire, or sites and things I've found and want to share. In no particular order...

Enjoy!

1. Latin America in the Modern Age.
This is a muy cool new site featuring all kinds of rockin' imported goods from Latin American countries. It is by an interior designer who discovered...

That Latin America is more than salsa and fiestas, coffee beans and bananas, sombreros and panama hats. Its ancient artisans have evolved into imaginative designers and its unknown cities are becoming exciting metropolises with contemporary cafes and chic boutiques.

2. Jennifer Perkins' new book is officially out today!

If you like livin' large and feelin' flashy you will totally dig
The Naughty Secretary Club: The Working Girl's Guide to Handmade Jewelry
($16.99, North Light Books, 144 pages, paperback).
The Naughty Secretary Club is packed with more than 50 kitschy-secretary-themed jewelry projects, plus lots of quirky sidebars covering hot topics such as office romance and the best secretary theme songs to listen to on your lunch break. You’ll learn how to use your office supplies in a whole new way - did you know standard office fare, like binder folders and shredded junk mail, makes craftalicious jewelry? Plus, author Jennifer Perkins will teach you how to turn almost anything into a charm, including plastic gnome cake toppers, doll furniture and cast-off hotel keys.

3. Stacy McQueen's, The Craft Whore, new web site!!

I've posted her hilarious vids here, now I'm happy to report Stacy has a new cyber home to host all of them!

4. Frida Lookalike Casting Call!

One of my artsy inspirations is Rio Yanez, and he is currently working on a Frida-friendly project with the San Francisco Museum of Art. They are having a model search to recreate Frida's paintings and moments in her life as living art. The next (and last) casting call is this Saturday.I will so be going to this exhibit!

5. My friend Krissi is coming out with a line of SkeleKitty rubber stamps!

See her blog for updates!

6. IndieFixx Craft-Off Contest!

Here are the rules and you can win all kinds of crafty loot, as seen in the photo above!

From Jen Wallace:

In order to win the Indie Fixx Craft-Off, you must create a crafty item of some sort and that craft must incorporate the number two in some way. I’m not picky about the type of craft and I will even accept creations that are more artsy or diy in nature, but whatever you decide to do, you must create it solely for the contest and you must incorporate the number two.

7. Margot Potter and her award-winning video series has a new installment!

8. Claudine Hellmuth just released her new product line too!! Sticky back canvas? Genius!

9. A Terri O Show!
Every week Terri Ouellette, Emmy winner, demos new art products on the market and tells us where to find them andhow to use them. She has an internet radio show too!! Check out the link and you'll see what I mean!

10. Only a few more days to enter Creativity 350!

Oh gosh, did I miss anyone? I didn't mean to. Have something to shout out? Leave it in the comments - a show, your site, your art, a gig, etc!

Patrick and his pencils. All he needs in life!

Patrick always gets excited over new pencils. Not fancy trucks, football games, or camping. Just pencils. He just scored these from my desk.

"Why?" I asked. "They are just pencils."

"Because they represent potential," he said. "A pencil and piece of paper can go a long way."

After saying "Awwww...", I immediately snapped this picture. It dawned on me that all the illos from the product line started with Patrick's pencil and a blank sheet of paper. I rattled off ideas and he sketched them to life!

Three cheers for Patrick!!!

Another round of thanks to Jaimee Rose for this wonderful blog post about the tour. Thank you, Jaimee!! and gracias to everyone else who has been posting about it, I appreciate it so much!!

On set at channel 3!

(click for a larger view)

And so it begins! I'll be on Good Morning Arizona at 8:45 to talk about the new product line. And then we will kick off the first appearance at 6pm at the Michaels Metro location.

This is the store where I have been shopping for years and years, so it really is a full-circle kind of thing. Gosh, I hope people come! I will just die if I show up and all there is are crickets chirping. How could I ever shop there again after that.

Ack! I'm stopping that. I'm going to think positive. Positive! POSITIVE!!!

The first 18 people get a FREE GIFT!

I also have some cute "I am a Crafty Chica" buttons to hand out. I'll be there with Patrick and the kids for two hours at each store. I'll answer questions, show the products and all kinds of fun stuff! And I'll also be signing books too!!

PROJECT: Inspiration Ribbon Collage Frame

This is an inspiration frame I made using one of the cards from the new Crafty Chica Inspiration Card Decks. (Click on photo for a larger view)

Each deck is comprised of paintings that Patrick and I made. Each card is double sided and comes with an artful affirmation on the back!

Show me a blank frame and I’ll show you a good time craft project. I recently came across some large matted frames on clearance at the store. I brought them home and showed them the love with a little help from my ribbon basket. This idea serves two purposes: it will clear your stash to make room for new trims, and it will add a textured look to your home decor. You can use the same technique on wood blocks, boxes, pillars and any other large smooth surface.

I used the "indulge" card to remind myself that it is A-OK to dive in every so often!

Supplies:
1 11x14” frame with a flat base and 5x7” mat
Assorted trims and ribbons, at least 1 yard of each
Aleene's Original Tacky Glue
Scissors

Directions: Separate the frame, setting aside the backing and glass. Take the mat and using flat ribbons, lay them down in various patterns until you like what you see. Start from the center and work your way out. Work one side at a time, and add a thin line of glue. Set the ribbon down on the glue, and run your fingers over it so it lays flat. Continue adding the ribbon and trims all around the mat. Add ribbon around the outer border as well. Set aside to dry. Repeat the process for the outer frame. Let dry and then add your picture and reassemble the frame.

Sneak peek of my new sewing book!

(click for closer view)

"Crafty Chica's Guide to Artful Sewing: Fabu-low-sew Ideas for the Everyday Crafter".

Just this morning I emailed my book editor asking for a proof of the cover of my new book. I hadn't seen it yet. I went out shopping with the fams, came home, and found the new Potter Craft spring catalog in my mailbox. I opened the page to find Martha Stewart's new book.

I turned the page and went - "Oh wow, what is this? This book looks really cool!'

Duh!

It was my book!!! So I did the happy dance all over the kitchen. I love that this design is totally different from my Art de la Soul book. I totally heart that book, but it is always fun to go in a different direction. This book is themed around a bright and cheery oilcloth design and has HUGE pictures of all the projects!

It comes out Feb 17, 2009. And it is even up for pre-orders on Amazon!

It's OK to believe in long shots: Oprah box sent out!

Remember this post from last month?

Well, I sent off that package to the senior producer of The Oprah Winfrey Show. Maya and I gave it a little happy blessing before it went out. Back at the Unity conference in July, I had given the producer my 15 second pitch and she loved it, gave me her card, and asked me to send her the details to her office. I was so nervous about it, I stalled. I don't know why I did that. This morning I woke up and made it the priority of the day. Twenty minutes before the Fed Ex man came, I decided to give her a decorated Empowerment Guardian for her TV show I had one finished, I just added some personalized touches).

Talk about speed crafting!

I know this is a lonnnnggg shot. I may have a better chance of losing 50 pounds by Monday. However - I'll never know unless I try. So we shall see what happens!

Look at Claudine Hellmuth...she made a gift for Martha and was determined to get it to her. She kinda did, in a round about way - but just when she least expected it - the call came. Eventually, she ended up on Martha's show!

You just have to put out that positive energy and have faith that something will come back around somehow, someway. Sometimes it may not be in the form we expected or hoped for, but it all comes out the way it was meant to be!

My sister's craft project!

She says she is not super crafty, but she did come up with an easy, nifty way to display her necklaces. She took an ordinary bulletin board, spray-painted it silver, and then used clear thumb tacks to hold her jewelry.

You could take this idea further - pick up a bulletin board at a thrift store, cover it in fabric, or paint a design on it and embellish thumb tacks with polymer clay, paint or glue glass marbles on them!

Store sign at Michaels!

Talk about SURREAL! I walked into Michaels today and saw this! I hope it helps bring people into the store next week!

PROJECT: Oilcloth Patchwork Messenger Bag

This is a bag I made a few months back, and every time I see the picture, I want to make a new one!

It's made from strips of oilcloth - actually some leftover pieces that I was almost going to toss. Then it dawned on me to just sew them all together to make one bag.

First, lube up your presser foot with some Sewer's Aid.

You will need to sew strips of oilcloth together horizontally, all the way down until you have one long piece of fabric that measures about 30" x 14".

Next, cut a piece of lining to match.

Sew the two pieces face in, on three sides. Turn it inside out and sew the raw ends closed (fold in the edges and stitch).

Fold it in thirds, determine how long you want the front flap to hang. I wanted mine about 3/4's down, and I wanted to add pompom fringe.

With the lining facing out, sew up the two sides. Turn that baby inside out and sew on that pompom fringe on the flap.

Sew the strap end to each inner side and you are good to go!

Prepping for our Heard Museum exhibit

(Patrick, going over the dimensions and layout of our upcoming art installation with the Heard Museum team)

I'm up late again because I drank way too much iced tea at lunch yesterday, and now it is after midnight and I can't sleep. Instead of tossing and turning, I decided to fire up the ol' tube and blog a bit until, hopefully, my eyelids begin to droop and I see double.

This afternoon (err, yesterday afternoon) Patrick and I met with the team at the Heard Museum to nail down all the final logistics of our upcoming exhibit. I was super excited and hyped (another side effect of too much tea at lunch) and kept asking for all these crazy extras. They were all approved by the staff and now. I have a LOT of work to do! We also received news that our show might be extended a couple of months, so I'm vibing on that!

It's such a weird/exciting time right now. On one hand, we are working like mad to promote the new product line in Michaels, and on the other we are busting out art for our first ever high profile gallery exhibit. We're experiencing both ends of the art spectrum simultaneously. Toss in our son starting college in a couple weeks, and a pregnant dog, 180 centerpieces to embellish - and yuppers. We have our hands full these days. Maybe I do need the iced tea afterall.

One thing I miss is making random stuff. You know? Hot gluing? Stitching? Sprinkling glitter? Making art that is not tied to deadlines, assignments or techniques. Just goofy, spontaneous creativity sessions while watching repeats of A Haunting. Plus, I've been slacking (for good reason) on adding new projects here, so look for some new ones soon!

Tomorrow (today?) I'm going to lock myself in the studio and just make things. That is my medicine more than anything. For me, it's the equivalent of rolling around in the grass or playing hookie from P.E. class. I love it! Even more than sipping melted chocolate, noticing the waistband on my pants are loose, or watching new episodes of Project Runway.

Oo-ooh. I just yawned!! Yay! OK, holla atcha later!

Customer question GLITTER

Cheves from Flickr asked: "What is different about your glitter than other glitters?"

ANSWER: Thank you for asking! I know there are a lot of glitters on the market, just like there are a lot of lipsticks, pens, tank tops, etc...

For my glitter, I asked the manufacturer (Duncan Enterprises) if I could *custom mix* each and every color. At first they thought I was crazy, because they had given me dozens of beautiful colors to choose from to create the selection. I told them that I loved the colors, but that I was so excited about the line, I would love to personalize it even further by blending my own shades.

You would have done the same thing. You know as crafters and artists, we are always mixing our own shades of everything. This was my one chance to really take it to the next level. So I thought I would at least ask.

My bosses finally came back with a happy YES and gave me their blessing. They brought me buckets and buckets of all the shades and I spent two days mixing, writing down measurements, sampling them on paper, velvet, wood. On all different types of adhesives, etc. Each glitter is holographic, except for the gold. I even designed them right down to the cut ("Can they make this one chunkier?").

*Side note*: For those two days that I was mixing glitter, I was in Fresno. After work, I went to Red Robin to eat, and the same waitress helped me. She always had a weird expression I couldn't quite pinpoint. It wasn't until I got home to Phoenix that I realized how weird it must have looked to see a big-haired chubby lady - dusted with glitter - eating a Bleu Ribbon Burger all by herself two nights in a row at a hamburger joint...

Back to the glitter. The cool thing is knowing that this is one person who is a craftaholic and glitter lover, who went all OCD on the process to make sure it came out with a one-of-a-kind spirit :-)

ALSO: We used Patrick's flaming heart drawing for the caps!! After you are done with the glitter, you can use the jar for something extra special!

Here is where you can buy the glitter right now!!

Thank you for the happy

This week is Art Unraveled 2008 (a national mixed media art retreat) and I've spent Sunday, Monday night, and today there. There is no better way to get inspired that to hang out with hundreds of artists and all-around crafty people. The event lasts through Sunday, and I have two more events.

Last night I taught a new class (for me) all about kamikaze PR for working artists. I was so nervous because all my previous workshops have always been about making art. I usually lug about three suitcases and come home covered in glitter. Last night I felt naked because I strolled in with a small rolly suitcase filled with student workbooks.

Three hours of talking! Can you say, "shaky palms"? To help stay focused, I typed up my presentation, about 20 pages and made copies for the students. The classed was a major hit! Once I started, everything clicked. I was so proud that I got everything in, and everyone stayed asking questions until the very last moment.

After spending 13 years at the newspaper, selling my art, and running my CraftyChica.com site, I've learned a thing or two of insider tips about scoring media hits. I coached last night's class on transferring the energy of their artwork into creative press releases, media pitches, blogging, networking, and so on. It's all about making you sound as interesting on paper as you are in your art.

I received great feedback and am finetuning my lesson plan so I can teach this class again in the future. What a lot of artists don't realize is that they can further their customer base, sales, and brand name by leaps and bounds by dedicating time to a publicity plan. You won't get asked to dance floor if you are hanging out by the punch bowl all night. Well, you might get asked to dance, but the chances increase if you show off your Moonwalking skills!

I taught a fabric collage purse class today. I was soooo sleepy because I put so much energy into the PR class, I didn't have any left when I came home last night. I woke up at 5 a.m. this morning and prepped for the class. I had nine students and they were armed and ready to make purses! Check out the picture up there of some of the bags they made.

Stacia made us all crack up. She walked over and held up this amazingly tricked out, fully-lined bag - with a flap and a long strap and says "Here's my bag, but it isn't embellished yet!"

Some people brought machines, and some didn't. We all ended up trading off, and I had a blast driving two vintage sewing machines - one from the 60s and another from the 80s. I tackled the challenges of fussy bobbins, I sweet-talked one into zigzagging properly, and at the end of the day, it felt sweet to go home with my good-natured Janome in tow.

Everyone was excited to use the Crafty Chica glitter, and I was happy to feed their fix! However, this one lady did not want glitter at all. No way. She had a cool vibe, made a fun purse, but she went all Ellen on me, and admitted she just wasn't into the micro sparkle.

I know art is about letting people express herself, but dang - I made it a personal mission to convert her. By the end of the class I had pushed a micro crystal on her. She smiled, sighed, and glued it on her bag.

Score!

At the end of the class she walked over, gave me a hug, and said, "Kathy! Thank you for the happy!"

...then she said, "I meant to say thank you for the help, but actually, thank you for the happy is better."

THat is my new catchphrase: "Thank you for the happy".

I just got home from a long day teaching at Art Unraveled, opened my email and found a long list of emails from Michaels store customers who bought Crafty Chica goodies. Thank you for all the pictures, sneaky videos (!!!), and letters. I appreciate them so much!

Isn't this little girl adorable?? Thanks, Maria Sanchez, for sending the pic! And look what CatBoxArtStudio had to say!

Look what artist Joanne Yada made with the Crafty Chica Wood Frame. She made a dimensional tribute to one of her favorite directors (and mine too!). Look close to see the tin foil UFO!

PROJECT: Postcard PIllows

I have some new projects coming up, but in the meantime, here is a replay: postcard pillows!

These are made from two cloth napkins (brand new). I whipped up this fetching set using postcards. I printed them on InkJet fabric sheets and sewed them onto a bigger piece of background fabric and then stitched the whole dang thing to the napkin, did it again, stuffed the pillow and sewed the seams shut.

Reports from the retail aisles!

What a weekend! More stores have put up the display, thank goodness! Word spread on MySpace and Twitter this weekend, and between calls and people going in and asking, many of the shelves have been filled. I've been receiving all kinds of emails from people all over the country. Here are some interesting notes that have come in:

- Some things are already sold out in certain stores!
- At one store, a lady said she was among six people who were waiting for the Michaels doors to open on Friday morning so they could but CC stuff!
- A woman from a Santa Fe location said the display very pretty much cleaned out.
- There is some confusion about the stores I'm visiting. The managers are holding the stock hostage until the appearance date, which isn't until three weeks away. We're trying to fix this.
- A lot of folks are buying items online!
- A Michaels employee told me to tell people that if their local store does not have the line, to ask to have the products transferred from another store. This will show that there is a demand at that location for the products.
- I've received several emails from Michaels employees saying they have purchased products!
- Some people have driven more than an hour out of the way to find a store that had the display up.

These are just a FEW of the notes! I'm amazed and overwhelmed and GRATEFUL! Here's some pics from the front lines. Tomorrow we are going through the list to see what stores have not displayed yet. I would love to hear from folks in Florida, Nevada, and Colorado! Thank you to those who wrote and sent pictures! don't forget to post them in the Crafty Chica Inspiration Gallery!

Customer purchases

See the Chihuahua patch? Patrick drew that design in the likeness of our dog, Ozzy. it is so cool to see that someone bought it!

Inspiration Cards are a hit! They are sets of 24 cards that feature my art collages and Patrick's paintings. On the back of each one is an affirmation message in both English and Spanish. See that lovely lady in the black and white top? That is my boss, Valerie Marderosian! She is the one who made this happen! Please throw her a handful of cyber glitter for supporting indie artists. Hopefully this line will help pave the way for all kinds of other lines by other artists!

I love this picture because I can see that a lot of items are sold out: Love Shrines, Empowerment Shrines, the bracelet and necklace kit, and the both sets of charms! And gold glitter! And my books!

Update on Michaels stores!

(Pictured left: My friend, Alleigh, poses in front of the display!!!)

Thank you 1,000 times over to those of you who have sent me emails with the updates on the Michaels stores!!! I appreciate it sooo much, it is so helpful!

I am so sorry for those of you who have gone into stores today to find no display yet!

I'm one of them!

Some stores had the display up since Tuesday (yay!), and others have yet to put it up. I called Duncan corporate and was told that EVERY store on this list was sent product on time - about two weeks ago.

The official program runs from August 1-October 31st, so every day of sales opp is crucial. These stores should have it displayed as of today. My crafty cohorts have informed me that they have been told by individual store managers that the product is either in the back stockroom, on a truck waiting to be loaded, not in the computer system yet, etc...

I am vibing up, thinking positive! Hopefully they will get it all displayed very, very, very, very soon.

In the meantime, I would encourage you to politely ask the manager or send an enthusiastic (we are all about peace, love, and glitter!) to Michaels customer service letting them know. I'm really grateful to Michaels for taking the line in 141 of their stores, I'm sure they will do their best to get it out there. I hope so!

Here is the "Crafty Chica" way to voice your concern:
Kill them with kindness! Express that you are ready to go spend money in their store, but can't because the items you want are not stocked yet. Tell them we've all been anxiously awaiting the big reveal. I think if they see how excited and happy we all are they will get excited and happy too and want to help.

And if your local Michaels is not on the list, you can also send a note to Michaels customer service asking for it! Every little bit helps!!

And if your local store DOES have the display and you like what you see, even if you don't buy anything, let the manager know.

IMHO, this is why it is so important that this line sells well in Michaels:

1. To pave the way for other indie artists to have their own lines.
2. To show the buying power of a different type of crafty consumer.
3. To add diversity to the retail world.

During our sales meetings, I expressed these points with the Michaels team and they all wholeheartedly agreed. I know they are on board with the game plan, it is just a matter of each store to follow in the excitement.

Anyway, thank you again!!!
