More Ellen glitter drama - good stuff!

My glittered desk Chihuahua
(Yes, he can be yours!)

Friday night I was mad at DeAngelo for not finishing the kitchen the proper way. I'm talking pots and pans coated with lasagna, sauces, etc. He didn't wipe down the counters, he left a sink full of dirty silverware...he only has to do the kitchen a couple nights a week, how hard can it be?

"Forget it! Go clean your room. I'll finish the kitchen the RIGHT way!" I snapped.

I angrily scrubbed away at the mess. It took a longggg time - but gave me time to ponder about the whole Ellen glitter event coming up. We've had a lot of interest from press, and as I rinsed off the dishes, I began to daydream:

- What if people say "Why are you rallying for this, and not something critical like the war, womens' rights, immigration?"

- "What do you want to get out of this?"

- "How does this help anyone?"

- "Why should Ellen (or anyone else) care?"

These questions are very important to me because everything I do, it comes from a place of love, and wanting to make the world a better place. So I tried to think of how we could do something meaningful with this project. Sure it is fun and silly, but with all the energy so many people are putting into it - I feel it needs substance.

I wondered how we could help the community. Like donating to charity! Not glitter, money!

Problem: I don't have cold cash to donate that would make a difference, neither do many other crafters. That's why we craft, to save some bills!

But, dang, I thought - Idols Give Back is on Wednesday night. I will admit I LOVE American Idol almost as much as I love melted chocolate. It's my main guilty pleasure from January to May. I even spent six years at the newspaper writing about it twice, sometimes three-to-four times a week for Arizona readers.

Well guess what? Ellen is co-hosting Idols Give Back again this year! And in addition to the safe sparkle rally on Tuesday, I scored tickets to be in her show audience on Wednesday!

I scrubbed the stove top harder and harder as my mind raced with ideas of how can we could raise money for IGB. Think about it. Wouldn't it be so cool to have us glitter-loving crafters raise funds for this? And then the golden idea struck my cluttered brain...

We could auction our glitter art and crafts online!

There are many things to love about Ellen and one of them is that she is serious about helping people in need.

“Everyone knows it’s better to give than to receive,” said Ellen in an American Idol press release. “That’s why I want to give you some advice. You get the advice and I get the joy of giving – it’s a win-win. Here it is: Give yourself a treat and watch IDOL GIVES BACK.

1. We crafters will be turning her dislike of glitter into love and much needed funds for the needy. She'll have to at least appreciate glitter after that, right? And it will show how much we all have heart!

2. It will educate her and her fans about "safe sparkle" (loose glitter alternatives).

3. We'll have fun and spread the sparkle (literally and metaphorically) at the same time!

I'm going to start the auction by myself with things I made using glitter. Cathie Filian is making glitter art as I type this! And whoever else wants to join in and donate their glitter art, I'll gladly add it to the list. Whatever is raised, I'll donate 100% of it to IGB inspired by Ellen!

Tomorrow, I'll be figuring out the logistics of it all, if you are interested, shoot me an email or post a comment. The other good thing is that those who cannot make it to the rally, can still get involved!

I am so serious/excited/devoted to this glitter/Ellen cause even more so now. So much that I am even parting with my beloved ceramic Chihuahua statue. It is covered in microfine holographic purple glitter that I mixed myself. I'll miss him so much, but it is for a good cause!

And I must say, DeAngelo thinks I am totally weird because I ran in his room, hugged him and said, "Thank you for doing such a sloppy job on the kitchen! You just helped raise money for starving children!"

In case you are reading this and thinking..."Wha...??", here is the press release that went out last week.

UPDATE:

PROJECT: Beaded Bottle Toppers

It was a tiny secret that took years to be revealed.
When my Patrick and I first dated, I had just purchased a new perfume. I loved it and used it lavishly. Our relationship flourished and I connected my eau de toilette with the passion. But when the romance ran out, so did the fragrance.

Patrick and I eventually reunited, and it was five happy years into our matrimony when I came across a beauty catalog. There on the front cover was a promotion celebrating the relaunch of some old favorites -- including my saucy scent.
I was so excited. This was my chance to right the wrong. I bought the huge economy size, spritzed it on and waited for any retro romantic reaction.

He didn't mention a word, much less come near me.

Figuring his allergies were acting up, I went for another round of the perfume, but I couldn't find it.

"Have you seen my new perfume?" I asked.

"Hmmm, it's not there?" he innocently replied. "Oh, just let it go, honey, I like the perfume you have now."

"But I got it as a surprise for you!" I said, with a big smile. "Don't you remember the smell? It's the one I used to wear when we were first dating!"

There was a pause, and then the horrifying reply.

"OK, I hid it," he confessed. "I never wanted to hurt your feelings then, or now, but dang! That perfume is skanky-smelling! The whole time we were dating I dreaded it, but you liked it so much. ... Please don't put me through that again!"

So I found out the hard way that if only I had asked him long ago, perhaps we would never have ended our courtship the first time. You think?

Anyway, I dedicate this Beaded Bottle Topper project to my hubby. May he find the perfect perfume to go with one of these bottles.

Supplies
* 3 glass, painted or wood beads in assorted sizes
* 3 seed beads
* 1 hatpin
* 1 bag of assorted-size corks
* Glass bottle (any size)
Directions: Match the beads' color scheme with the room where you will display your bottle. Arrange the beads on the hatpin, leaving 1 inch at the bottom. Choose a cork that fits your bottle. Carefully push the beaded pin into the middle of the cork and place into bottle.

Tip: Fill with colored mouthwash for added dimension, or glue other beads around the lip.

New craft books

Kathy Cano-Murillo
Special for the Republic
Mar. 29, 2008 12:00 AM

The crafting industry rings up more than $30billion a year. That means most of us - at one point or another - have picked up a glue stick, a pair of scissors or a needle and thread. If you haven't - it's time you did!

Don't know where to start? The answer is as close as your local bookstore, where dozens of new craft titles have been released.

I've scoured all of them and these are some of my favorites for this season. Pick a topic that interests you, buy the book, and then invite a friend over to share in the fun.

Material World: Home Decor Project for the Fabric Obsessed, by Cat Wei (Quarry Books, 160 pages, $19.99 paperback): You don't have to be a master seamstress to play with fabric. These ideas are all about using material accents to add texture to any room or living space.

Bead Simple: 150 Designs for Necklaces, Earrings, Bracelets, Embellishments and More, by Susan Beal (Taunton Press, 220 pages, $19.95 paperback): Innovative (and easy) beaded designs that range from classy to campy. Includes projects from dozens of national designers, including a multimedia charm collage by yours truly! (I'll post the project separately)

Art Journals & Creative Healing: Restoring the Spirit Through Self-Expression, by Sharon Soneff (Quarry Books, 128 pages, $24.99 paperback): If you want to use art as inspiration or for healing, this is the one for you. It offers an array of introspective diary pages by various artists, plus the personal story of how the piece came to be.

Downtown DIY Sewing: 14 Easy Designs for City Girls With Style, by Alice Chadwick (Watson-Guptill, 63pages, $12.95 paperback): Quick and clean design recipes for reconstructing clothing into big-city jewelry, accessories and more. Includes three patterns as well.

The Complete Book of Retro Crafts: Collecting, Displaying & Making Crafts for the Past, by Suzie Millions (Lark Books, 176 pages, $14.95 paperback): Fun, colorful, kitschy and downright silly - but still 100 percent cool. Detailed directions for making vintage home accessories that look like they came straight from your hip grandma's house.

99 Ways to Cut, Sew, Tie & Rock Your Scarf, by Faith Blakeney, Justina Blakeney and Ellen Schultz (Potter Craft, 208 pages, $19.95 hardback): Scarves are the new T-shirts! Cut them up, and turn them into something else. This clever little page turner shows every-which-way they can be morphed into runway-worthy blouses, bags and more.

Other fabulous titles to check out!

- Beadalicious: 25 Fresh, Unforgettable Jewelry Projects for Beads Old and New

- Amigurumi World: Seriously Cute Crochet
- SEW Everything Workshop

- Links: Inspired Bead and Wire Jewelry Creations

Hoy hablo sólo español (kind of)

¡Porque mañana tengo la clase española y yo necesito mucha práctica!

Anoche enseñé una clase de la arte por HLI (Hispanic Leadership Institute). OK, this is taking forever to figure out...I'll switch to English just for now.

I taught a class last night for HLI, and we had a blast! (What is the Spanish word for "blast"?)

At first, the women saw the blank saints - and their faces froze. They had t he look of "Oh gosh, we have to paint that?" As soon as I broke it down into steps, they got the gist and we well on their way to making their masterpieces. I love seeing how everyone begins with identical materials, but you could never tell that when they are all finished.

HLI Workshop: Mucho sonrisas!

Lots of camaraderie, laughs, and networking last night. Thank you, ladies!!!

OK, bueno, regreso a hablo español...

Here are the pictures.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE : “Safe Sparkle” Rally Outside the Ellen DeGeneres Burbank Studio

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“Safe Sparkle” Rally Outside the Ellen DeGeneres Burbank Studio

Fresno, Calif. (March 26, 2008) Due to Ellen DeGeneres’ public attempts to ban glitter, Kathy Cano-Murillo, the Crafty Chica, is staging a rally outside Ellen’s Burbank studio on April 8 to spread the message of practicing “safe sparkle”.

The “Safe Sparkle” rally is Kathy’s way of educating Ellen and her viewers on loose glitter alternatives that don’t leave behind the pesky flakes that the beloved TV host has come to hate. Kathy, a glitteraholic, believes glitter adds light and beauty to our troubled world and thinks Ellen would agree - if only loose glitter weren’t so messy!

At the rally, Kathy will be demonstrating various “safe sparkle" glitter applications, so Ellen’s fans can still share the sparkle - but not in a way that will annoy the hostess-with-the-mostess.

WHAT: Safe Sparkle Glitter Rally
WHEN: Tuesday, April 8, 2008.
TIME: Noon to ???
WHERE: NBC Studios, 3000 West Alameda Avenue in Burbank, Calif.
WHO: Anyone who wants to help Ellen find her inner glitter! All are welcome!

The rally is expected to draw a large crowd of supporters, including:

- Mark Montano (TLC Network host, and author of The Big Ass Book of Crafts
- Jenny Ryan (writer and blogger for Craft: magazine and founder of Felt Club)
- Cathie Filian (co-host of Creative Juice on the DIY Network)
- and members of the Los Angeles Craft Mafia, the San Diego North Park Craft Mafia - all gathering to spread the message of glitter tolerance and most importantly, “safe sparkle”.

Kathy Cano-Murillo, known as the Crafty Chica to her 10,245 MySpace friends and two million per month website visitors, is leading this peaceful charge. Posted on her blog, in an open letter to Ellen, the Crafty Chica said:

“I love you. I've always loved you.
So much that I've always had your back through goods times and bad. I love you because you preach love, kindness and equality for all people and things! Which is why your recent segment broke my heart!

Please don't try to get glitter banned! I happen to be a fan of glitter because I feel it shines light both literally and metaphorically. Light is good because it gives people a sense of wonder and hope that they might need at that very moment.

OK, I can totally understand your points - BUT you are talking about "loose" glitter. Please understand that is just one (the most well known) kind of glitter. Not all glitters are the same.

Please don't pass judgment on all glitters based on this one type. Yes, loose glitter can be a headache to deal with. It has no shame, it sticks from person to person, thing to thing, with no remorse. And um, yes, I use it faithfully. And secretly, I kinda like it when one of my flecks spreads to someone else!

HOWEVER - I'm a preacher of "safe sparkle". I teach many workshops and have met many people who don't like loose glitter either, so I educate them on loose glitter alternatives. And I think if you knew about these, you might find it in your heart to come to love glitter.”

The rally will begin at noon at 3000 West Alameda Avenue in Burbank, Calif.

The glitter troops are ready. Ellen DeGeneres, here we come!

Hola, my crafty friends!!

We've set a new date for the Safe Sparkle Rally! I'm writing to you to see if you or any of your posse would be interested in joining me and other glitter lovers across the land in standing up in the name of sparkle in front of Ellen DeGeneres'
Burbank studio!

Ellen hates glitter and is (jokingly??) trying to get it banned!

Attached is the press release that went to Ellen's producers today,
along with some ideas for safe-sparkle alternatives. I'll have samples
of these at the rally, bring yours too!!!!

WHAT: Safe Sparkle Glitter Rally

WHEN: Tuesday, April 8, 2008.

TIME: Noon to ???

WHERE: NBC Studios, 3000 West Alameda Avenue in Burbank, Calif.

WHO: Lead by Kathy Cano-Murillo, the Crafty Chica. Also attending are:

- Mark Montano (TLC Network star, and author of The Big Ass Book of Crafts)

- Jenny Ryan (Writer and blogger for Craft: magazine)

- Cathie Filian (co-host of Creative Juice on the DIY Network)

- Members of the various Craft Mafias, including Los Angeles Craft
Mafia, San Diego North Park Craft Mafia)

- Many more! And anyone else who wants to join us!

Background info:

Ellen wants all glitter banned!

I LOVE Ellen and was heartbroken when she started dissing glitter on
her show because it is messy and gets everywhere. She even went on a
jumbotron on Hillary Clinton's press rally and asked if she would ban
glitter if Hills became our next Prez. I've blogged about it and sent
letters to her explaining all the different kinds of glitters.

I want us crafters to educate Ellen and let her know about the many
"safe sparkle" alternatives out there. We could help her choose the
right glitter for her, so she will stop judging all glitter the same.
It is LOOSE glitter she hates, so her fans need to know to send her
other kinds of sparkle. Ellen is a sparkling chica, she deserves
glitter that suits her!

OK...I know glitter won't be banned, but I thought it would be fun if
all of us crafters stepped up with "safe sparkle" alternatives. I
think Ellen would get a kick out of it and maybe even come outside to
meet us!

Mucha gracias (holds scissors over heart in respect)!

Kathy :-)

PEACE, LOVE, & GLITTER!!

Crafty TV Casting Call for Teens!

My friend Cathie filian, co-host of Creative Juice, asked me to repost this message! If you know of a crafty teen, or if you are one - check this out!

Our production company, Two Bees and a Pea, is casting young adult & teen crafters for a new "untitled" craft show. This show will be guest based - so you could be the star of the show. :) We produce Creative Juice on DIY and HGTV and this will be a brand new show.

We are seeking crafty guests from all over the USA and will begin the process with DVD submissions. The DVD's are not for air on TV they are for casting purposes. Fear not if you don't have access to a video camera. Just send a photo of yourself (big smile) holding or showing off your handmade items.

Here are a few guidelines:

You should have high energy and great style. Show off your style - flaunt it!

Your crafts should be current, hip, cutting edge - think Urban Outfitters, Anthropology, Gossip Girl, Project Runway, MTV!

You can make anything from room decor, jewelry, clothing, soap making, knitted and crochet goods, lip balm, art, etc. The most important thing is that you know your stuff and can explain how you make it in a clear and fun way.

The deadline is May 1st – 2008. Age range: Teens, Young Adults (28 and under)

Video Guidelines:

1.Have high energy and be yourself. State your name, where you are from, how long you have been crafting and what your craft project is. Try to hold your project in your hand or have it next to you and briefly explain to us how you made it. You can show a step or two on how you made it you want.

2.Try to keep the camera as smooth as possible (using a tripod helps) and make sure you have lots of light so we can see you.

3.Fashion tips for the camera: Please don't wear prints, all black (even if you are goth), white or red. Tattoos, elaborate hair dos, and punky attire are just fine.

4.Videos should be no longer than 3 minutes and should be submitted on DVD only. Tapes cannot be viewed. On the DVD please include your name, your craft, email, city, phone number and age if you are under 18.

Photo Guidelines:

1.Have a big smile in the photo. Try to hold your project in your hand or have it next to you. You can include a picture of you at a sewing machine or at your work station or in the process of making something.

2.Fashion tips for the camera: Please don't wear prints, all black (even if you are goth), white or red. Tattoos, elaborate hair dos, and punky attire are just fine.

3.Photos should be digital, high resolution and should be submitted in print and on a CD. On the back of the photo and on the CD please include your name, your craft, email, city, phone number and age if you are under 18.

"Chicafied" Wrist Cuffs

I whipped these up this weekend. Sorry the photo is not more glamorous! I just posted them for sale at my store! Whenever I have nervous energy, I make stuff. These just kinda came out of nowhere, but I love them. If they sell, I'll certainly make more and refine the process!

Check out the new issue of BUST!

It features the first of many magazine ads for the new Crafty Chica product line, which I am still pinching myself over! Last summer, Alyson from the marketing department asked me to gather up some names of my favorite crafty friends. I sent them over. Now I see this ad, and I'm so flattered that these talented ladies all agreed to be a part of it. Thank you, chicas!

And I must say, my list was about double than the pictures you see here (I generous with giving out my friends names!), hopefully there will be a round 2!! The message of the ad is that anyone can be a crafty chica. We come in all shapes and sizes and backgrounds!

And here is video from the SXSW BUST craft party (where they made my totes), courtesy of Jennifer Perkins!

Elijah Wood was the guest DJ for the event. I have a psecial memeory of him from when I got to interview him in 2005!

Elijah Wood, Everything is Illuminated.
Here is the link to the interview!

You likee the picture? My friend and co-worker Celine took it. Elijah came through Phoenix for a publicity tour for his new movie, Everything is Illuminated (loved it!). He met me at The Willow House, a central Phoenix coffeehouse, on a Wednesday morning and put up with all of my goofy questions, while Celine snapped photos. Both Celine and had red cheeks from blushing so much and trying to look cool and normal. Elijah is just how he seems in pictures, interviews and on screen. He is so cool, easy going and funny. I asked some pretty weird questions (that didn't make it in the printed story) and he was quick to answer all of them. Could you imagine sitting down for coffee with Elijah Wood at a local coffeehouse? It was so surreal and an experience I'll never, ever forget!

18 years ago at this moment...

"Til death do us part"

...Patrick and I were at the Pointe South Mountain Resort following our wedding reception, sitting on the bed counting the dollar dance money. $2,0000 to be exact. Next, we ordered a pizza! I was still in my mom’s wedding dress from the late ’50s, and Patrick in Ethiopian royal garb (a gift from a friend of ours who was a prince in Ethiopia!). We had 300+ guests that included nanas, cousins, musicians, artists, business executives, kids, court judges, and even stylin' pachucos with vintage cars! It was literally a wild and wacky artful event, and everyone got along beautifully!

Today is our 18th wedding anniversary, and oh what a fun ride it has been!

We met in January 1985. I was a clerk in the correspondence department of the Phoenix Municipal Traffic Court, and one day this slick, handsome vato loco-looking dude walks up to my desk and asks me if I know where he can find a dolly (to move boxes!). It was Patrick! It was his first day working at the court’s front counter. I had been dating a super nice English-American boy for almost four years and thought my life was set, but meeting Patrick for the first time sent a tingle on the inside and outside of my spine.

We were such opposites! He was into Earth, Wind and Fire; Prince, and Stevie Wonder. He loved to party. I remember rolling my eyes at his taste in music and lifestyle. I was into The Vandals, Peter Gabriel, and the Talking Heads. I loved to read books, and watch my friends’ bands play at local clubs. Patrick rolled his eyes at me! Next thing we knew, we were carpooling and arguing/laughing/confessing about everything from music, to our upbringing, and places we wanted to travel. He was all about discovering Aztlan, I was all about finding cool jewelry at thrift stores.

By early May, still working at the traffic court, we had each broke up with our former partners, and finally went on our first date. He took me to a Mexican restaurant and I ordered a hamburger and fries. He couldn’t believe I didn’t like Mexican food - or that I hadn’t tasted it. He ordered me a green chili chimi (I haven’t stopped eating it since, unfortunately for my waistline). Meeting him changed my life in so many ways.

It was a magical time (I savored every second of it) but we only dated for three months. We decided to go back to being friends. It was the best decision I ever made in my life. As friends we were able to become comfortable with each other, share juicy gossip, give unwanted advice, and help each other out 24/7. We became very tight. We got to know each other’s lives, our friends, and our families. He started playing reggae music (both of our favorite kinds of music!) and I became his band manager. That went on for four years. My stomach did the flip floppy thing every time he called or we met up to do something, or had a band gig. He got me into making art. I took him to Bad Brains and Fishbone concerts, and he took me our salsa dancing (I had never been!). I pretended I was over him, but really I was crazy in love the whole time. I never admitted it until our wedding night. He said he knew all along - and that it went vice versa!

You know that cliche saying: "if you love something let it go, if it is really yours it will come back to you?" - yup! It is true! We officially got back together in winter of 89. It was the single best moment of my whole life. We both knew it was for real. I truly believe that having that long, respectful friendship is what made our bond so strong to this day!

Trivia: When we were working at the courts, one day my boss asked me to write up a flyer using all kinds of markers. I had no idea, but she had asked Patrick to draw an illustration for the same flyer. It was the department newsletter. When it was distributed, my jaw dropped from excitement. On the front page, she had incorporated his drawing with my lettering. At the bottom, it read "flyer design by Patrick Murillo and Kathy Cano". That was LONG before we ever knew we would be doing what are doing now!

Peep my ride

Happy Easter!

Have you seen the Peeps genius going on over at the Washington Post today? They held the 2nd Annual Peeps Diorama contest and have a slide show of 37 of the best entries. Vote for your fave!

I love this "Project Peepway" one: by semifinalist, Kate Wilkoff, 17. She depicts the finalists and judges from "Project Runway."

As soon as I saw the contest this morning, I couldn't help but have a little Peep fun with the kids. We made this one and call it "Peep My Ride".

Here's another funny one that Dlisted.com (one of my favorite sites!) posted today.

Easter ideas!

Just because you are set to color Easter eggs this weekend doesn't mean the holiday duties stop there. There are still baskets to fill, food to cook and, most important, decorations to display. With only 48 hours to go, I'm sharing a few tips and tricks to make the most of the final countdown.

Pop Art Decal Eggs
Pop Art Eggs

Lucha mask Cascarons
Cascarones!
Cascarones! Lucha and otherswise...

Iced Eggs
Iced Out Eggs

Fake chocolates
Fake Chocolate Candies

Other ideas:

* Fill plastic eggs with rice. Glue shut to make musical Easter "shakers."

* Create festive place mats with fun foam. Use one sheet as your base and glue a border of shapes in chicks, carrots, eggs and flowers.

* Use hot glue to cover a basket with faux spring flowers for a centerpiece to hold colored eggs.

* Cut bunny-feet shapes from craft sponge and use chalk to leave a trail of bunny footprints.

* Personalize the outside of plastic glassware with stickers, dimensional squeeze paint or markers.

* Make party favors by filling mini-terra-cotta pots with pastel-colored candy.

* Empty an egg, gently create a little "window,"paint and decorate the entire surface and insert a family photo inside for a minidiorama.

* Roll up small toys or candies in crepe paper into a ball, add wiggly eyes and construction-paper bunny ears and a cotton ball for the tail. Kids will have fun unrolling the paper to find the surprise.

* Decoupage Easter napkins on all four sides of a box and use as a utensil holder.

* Fill a large, clear bowl with water and drop in fresh daisies to float on top.

* Snip strips of party streamers and roll each into small tissue flowers, tie to a string and hang.

* Glue jelly beans around a plastic foam topiary and insert into a painted planter.

Hallmark card contest!

Hallmark is holding a "funny card" design contest. Entries are due by this Sunday! So many of us are creative writers and illustrators and artists, we should take a stab at this!

Click here to check out the details! There are also links with tips, Q&A, etc. Good luck!

Now you can show off all that wit and win big, too!

Make a card that is so milk-spittingly funny that people can't help but send it. (Any day of the year, just to spread some laughter around. Nothing too specific or occasion-based. This means no "birthday" or "holiday" cards.) (We call this a "just for fun" card in the biz). Maybe it's a cartoon with a set-up on the cover and a punch-line on the inside, or it could be a photo with funny word balloons, or even a working model of a 12th century grist mill. Ok, not that. But the other things would be cool.
How does all this funnyness work?

Just send us your original card idea, making absolutely, positively sure it's your idea that originated in your original brain. From the millions of submissions we will no doubt receive, our highly skilled team of guessers will guess in their highly skilled way which 18 make the finals. All finalists will have their funnyness printed and sold nationwide in more than 3,500 participating Gold Crown stores and on Hallmark.com! Then we leave it up to you, World, to pick the Grand Prize Winner.

That lucky duck will receive the cool prizes on the right as well as the enduring admiration of their peers worldwide, except they won't be their peers anymore because now they've surpassed them. (Woohoo! Ditch those former worldwide peers!)

Another goofy post! This time about Ann Wilson.

This morning Patrick and I were discussing my previous blog post, and how we are going to give our art room a glorious makeover. Just then the phone rings and the caller I.D. reads:

"Ann Wilson"

"Ann Wilson?" I asked out loud while the phone continued to ring. Ann Wilson is the lead singer of Heart - only my FAVORITE band from way back when (and secretly a little bit now too).

"Ooooohhh...is she calling to place an order? Maybe she wants me to bedazzle her jeans!!" I squealed. That would just be the highlight of my whole month, year, etc!! We've had celebrity clients before, so anything is possible! I immediately brainstormed a fabulous gift box filled with all kinds of hand made art for her!

Patrick answered, and it was an order for him for a custom Day of the Dead shadow box from our web site. He handed me the phone so I could walk her through the rest of the process.

Finally, I just HAD to ask about the name on the caller I.D. and if she was connected to THE Ann Wilson.

She chuckled.

"I get that all the time. It's my roommate's name. She is Ann Wilson, but not THE Ann Wilson. But the name works great for restaurant reservations!"

On that note, I'm off to clean the art room again...

Why, oh why, can't I be like this?

Today I finally hit the art room and cleaned it up for the next round of projects - like my upcoming craft columns, some magazine projects, one sewing book project re-do, and later this week, sample projects for the package covers of my soon-to-be released craft kits.

Let me explain this art room. It was beyond Jack Black messy because the last 30 days have been crazy. Between orders, CHA, the cruise, and then a week in Fresno - I had no time to tidy up there. Imagine what it looked like! OK, now times that by 100. And add the stench of spilled varnish, masked with "clean linen" air freshener. After a couple hours of sorting, dusting, vacuuming, and filing this afternoon, I let out a proud sigh of accomplishment. One minute later, I was already working on the next assignment.

Does it look spiffy to you? It does to me, thank you very much!

After all that, I yawned, streched my arms over my head and took a break this evening after dinner to go online. I visited some sites, including my friend Jaimee's blog. She is to the Martha scene what Jennifer is to the indie scene: A highly respected, professional trendspotter. When she writes about something, it's a HUGE deal.

Today Jaimee posted about the adorable Heather Bailey. I was instantly delighted!! Heather is a Phoenician like me, a mom like me, likes bright colors like me, designs products like me...I felt so proud for all her accomplishments, she is even on the COVER of Mary Engelbreit Magazine this month! Lookie!!

See what I mean? She is so cute! I felt connected to her, we have so much in common! Within seconds I imagined us being lifelong friends, having coffee, and laughing heartily about our favorite clothes we ruined with accidental paint splatters. Or the last time we lost our favorite pinking shears, only to find them at the bottom of the laundry basket because our daughter decided to alter her jeans and then changed her mind and left everything there for Mom to fix. Yup! I was excited to learn more about Heather!

I cheerfully cruised to her web site (just as sumptuous as Heather!) and found she has a whole page dedicated to her studio. Still high off my Project Art Room Clean Up from earlier, I couldn't wait to see what her workspace looked like. With all the designs she cranks outs - way more than me - I was pre-relieved, thinking that it would look as kamikaze as mine. Probably more because she has twice the amount of things going on as me!

*Needle scratches across the record*

My jaw dropped. Um, Heather's room is a leeetle different than mine. Make that a lot different.

Tears welled up in my eyes. OK, I'm being way overdramatic here! But still - how embarrassing of me to think we were alike! All of a sudden I felt like the chubby girl in 8th grade P.E. class. You know, the clueless one with the shirt that is too small, the frizzy hair, and braces? The Ugly Betty of the bunch?

Dang! Heather's studio is an art gallery! I would buy a ticket to tour that space. She even describes all the delicate details she put into every corner (which are followed by oodles of blog comments from people who are just as blown away as me):

"The pink walls are subtley mottled with bit of cream and a splash of funky metallic gold here and there. The large frame resting on the ribbon shelf is decorated with Isaac's grandmother's old sewing notions, and it's covered -- a fun piece to study."

How does she do it? Where can I take a class on it? And with kids? I seriously need to stop the hamster wheel that is my life, board up my current art room, and start ALL over. I'm going to print out this picture of Heather's studio and tape it on my inspiration board so I'll be motivated to makeover my room. I bet having all that clear, organized space helps with the creative process. I'm awestruck. It just goes to show that no matter much you think you have things under control, there is always, always, always room for improvement...

An art studio is a serious thing. It should be treated with dignity, and not like a sweatshop, which is what mine sometimes feels like. I'm already pondering what color to paint it...it's nothing I can do anytime soon, but hopefully by the end of the year! Then again, if I redo it picture perfect, I'll be stressed when I'm working, worried that I'll mess it up. Oh, this is too much for me to think about tonight..

Enough about that. Congrats to Heather, a fellow mom, following her dreams and making them happen!!! And for being so neat about it :-)

Heather's fabrics. Check out her site, read her interviews. Trust me you will be inspired!

Basket rings

When we were on the cruise, one of our crafters, Julie, broke out with a gallon-sized Ziplock bag of mini Mexican basket rings. She bought them at Goodwill and didn't know what to do with them She offered them to the group and none of us knew what to do with them either.

On the last day, I took one and slipped it on my finger as a ring. Next I added yarn. "Put crystals on!" someone chimed...so I did. And I ended up up with a super fly-looking finger flasher.

Ann followed my lead and made a basket ring too. She used holographic sequined trim for hers (que fancy!). It just goes to show that we were drunk on crafting. You know when you finish your drink and sip the straw once more, hoping to eek out that last little bit of fun? Well, it was like that for us, except with craft supplies. We had finished our projects, so we scoured the room and made stuff out of the leftovers.

Here are our finished rings!

And here are Ann's pictures from the cruise!

This is how we clean the art room.

Patrick cleaned his workshop area and used everything to make this
mirror! Foamcore, bows, lights, gliiter, fake flowers. Now - where do
we hang it?

Phoenix Indie Craftorama!

Visit Phoenix Indie Craftorama on MySpace!

This is an event I'm organizing for next month. Special thanks to Tod Mettler from the Duck and Decanter for letting us kamikaze crafters take over the place for a day!

I've always wanted to participate in in a local indie craft show, but never had time to look into it. I've had the Phoenix Fridas group for three years now and recently noticed all these other great craft groups popping up. I thought now would be a great time to stage one event that unites them all! Or at least the ones I've heard of. I asked Tod if it would be OK if we could hold it at the Duck and he was 100% thrilled.

This show is different from many shows because the spotlight is on craft collectives, as opposed to single vendors. It takes a lot of work and passion to keep your art going, much less an art group. So I think it is due time our lovely city takes notice!

P.S. Ellen update coming soon!

My weekend

As soon as I got home from Fresno, it was time to get ready for the event at Changing Hands bookstore. It was called "Hobby to Business" and I led a panel of accomplished women in the local Phoenix crafts scene who shared their success stories.

Lisa Jacobs was there to talk about getting your work into stores either on consignment or in co-ops. She recently opened Conspire Phoenix, a co-op where artists can work there, sell their art and actually make money!

We also had Cyndi Coon of Laboratory 5, she makes these adorable greeting cards using felt and they sell all over the country in hundreds of stores including Kate's Paperie in NYC!

I LOVED chatting with Cyndi because we have very similar horror stories of when we first presented our lines at trades shows and got stuck making our wares non-stop, all through the middle of the night and such. Over the years, she has learned the business of manufacturing handmade goods (out of her home!) in the most efficient way possible. Cyndi had some GREAT ideas for young businesses, and I'm planning to write them and and post it all here very soon. One of the things that stuck out was her "stalker list". She subscribes to dozens of glossy magazines, and then gets the address of the stores featured, and sends them a catalog. Her list is 3,000 names long - and that way she is always working on a steady flow of orders.

One of Cyndi's cards.

We also had Linda Young from Art Unraveled. She talked about how to pitch a workshop, and how to write it up. Her first tip was to get experience by teaching at small paper arts stores around town to get experience. This is a good idea for artist's who don't want to sell, sell, sell - but want to teach and inspire.

That was Friday night.

The next morning, yesterday, I had Spanish class. Gulp. I had missed the last two weeks because of the cruise, and I almost didn't go yesterday because I hadn't had time to study. The worst feeling is to get called upon and not have a clue what to answer. However, Patrick MADE me go. "It will only be worse next week," he said. I went. I'm glad I did because it was a hardcore lesson on conversation and incorporating "me, le, les, and nos". Lordy, I have a LOT of practicing to do! My teacher's name is Herman, he is from Columbia, and he is very patient with us. I wasn't the only one struggling, thank goodness!

By the time I came home from class, Patrick had already left for his gig in Kingman, AZ. He is so cute, he called this morning to say they were on their way home, and he told me that after the gig, the band saw a limo sitting in front of the club. Patrick said he walked up and asked the driver if he would drive the band around the block for $10.

I know, I know...I'm cracking up thinking about it too. That's how the mind of Los Murillos think though. It never hurts to ask - you might just get a yes!

And indeed, the driver said yes! He escorted them to Circle K, and the band members stuck their heads out of the top window, and cheered like they were Van Halen in Vegas. Patrick said he thinks it would be a fun business to have a tricked-out car or limo and go to events just to drive people to the parking lot. Just for the experience of feeling like a rock star, even if it is only for five minutes! Even if it is in Kingman, AZ!

Maya is at Disneyland this weekend with her orchestra group from school, and my sister took my parents to Laughlin. She left me and DeAngelo (the only two of us home this weekend) with her two dogs, Lola (beagle) and Rocco (Shitzu). We have four Chihuahuas here, and all I can say is I think I witnessed some Brokeback Mountain puppy action going on that disturbed me. Six dogs is way over-the-top!! Everyone wants to be the alpha! I will be soooo happy when she picks up Lola and Rocco tonight.

Yesterday was slow. I finally had a chance to clean the house, catch up on laundry, relax, clear my mind, dream big.

In other words - I was bored out of my freakin' mind.

I lured DeAngelo away from his intense World of Warcraft game, and we ate burgers on the patio. We chatted about life, family, school, friends, money, etc. We watched TV. We yawned. We were going to see amovie but had a bad case of the lazies.

Later on, I sent a text to my friend, Jennifer Perkins, who was at the SXSW Bust Magazine party, she had all her jewelry there! I asked her to please take pics of people working on the Crafty Chica totes and she wrote me back that she already did! No wonder she is one of my best friends! She's on top of EVERYTHING, 24/7!!! And she looks smashing to boot. BTW: That is not her in the photo below, it is someone she took a picture of.

Crafty Chica Totes at SXSW

You can see more pictures here!

Well, I'm off to make an event flyer, and then clean the art room and work on art orders. Even though I've been at home for hours, it feels like it was a jammed packed couple of days!

PROJECT: Picture Bracelet (made from washers)

This is a bracelet I made using washers, pictures, bola tie slides and jump rings. A wonderful chica named Mona turned me on to the idea a long time ago, except she used pictures of typewriter keys. Very easy, and it is a great project for kids! My daughter, Maya, even demoed it on the DIY Network, and it is featured in one of my Crafty Diva books!

PROJECT: T-shirt apron

Whether you are into cooking, crafting or plain sewing - making an apron is a great project to tackle.

I've seen my friends use so many resources I never would have thought of - vintage linens, old pajamas, a men's dress shirt, cloth napkins, even fabric scraps sewn together.

This week, it's all about the old T-shirts. Finally, you have a use for that concert T from college or your husband's old sports shirt, the one he won't throw away. You'll need two T-shirts, one to show off the pattern and one to cut up, for this project. Find what you love, and then hack it to pieces in the name of art.

If you stayed in and studied in college, then check out the junior T-shirt section at stores such as Wal-Mart (locations Valley-wide at www.walmart.com) and Target (locations Valley-wide at www.target.com), where you'll find a cheap selection of vintage-looking T-shirts with concerts, cartoons and other logos for around $10.

For adult sizes, thrift stores will have a great selection of real vintage T's for as little as $2.

I plan to use mine in the art room, where I'm forever looking for a paper towel to wipe my hands or a cloth to clean my paintbrush. This is a great project for beginning sewers because no pattern is needed.

Supplies

Coordinating fabric, about 12by 12 inches

Sewing machine

T-shirt with your favorite design (shirt A)

Scissors

T-shirt you can cut up (shirt B)

Straight pins

1 ribbon 1 inch by about 48inches

2 ribbons 1 inch by 12inches

Directions

Hem the coordinating fabric on the top and both sides. With shirt A, cut out the design, going through the back layer as well, in the shape for the top.

Turn them right side in, and sew up three sides. Turn it right side out. On the open side, fold the raw edges in and sew a hem along it as well as the other three sides. Attach to the center of the coordinating fabric to create the top of the apron.

With shirt B, cut the bottom half off for the skirt of the apron. Leave it right side out and sew a hem along the sides and bottom.

Center and pin the top of the apron to the bottom of the apron and sew. Center the long ribbon (cut to the length to fit you) along the middle seam and sew. Sew on ribbon straps, one to each side of the top of shirt A.

Variations: You can alter the decorations the way you like. I added lace along the edge and a cupcake pocket made from scrap fabric and decorated with ribbon. For an even easier apron, skip the coordinating fabric and cut shirt A to fit as the top.

The Chocolate Lover's Club

I'm here at the Fresno airport waiting for my flight home. I remember
slipping a new book in my carry-on, so I bypassed the magazine rack,
but did pick up a bag of M&Ms. I just finished reading a novel last
week and forgot what book I brought with me for this trip. So I popped
a candy-coated peanut in my mouth, unzipped the side pocket of my bag,
and found this book!

Perfect timing! I'm only three pages in and I LOVE it! It's about a
group of English women who have a secret chocolate club. Considering I
have been kicked out of a chocolate club once for accidentally eating
all the group's chocolate, I think this page-turner is quite fitting!

Crafty Chica at SXSW this Saturday!

Come visit the Bust Magazine party at the South By Southwest Music Conference this Saturday. for free totes from my new product line. You'll get to decorate them in Crafty Chica glitter too!

It's a full-blown crafty party! Check out the flyer to see all the other cool things going on.

Stay tuned!!!

PLEASE send me a note if you will be able to help round people up, so I can put you on my list. KathyATcraftychicaDOTcom.

Hola, my crafty sistahfriends!!

I'm writing to you to see if you or any of your posse would be interested in joining me in standing up in the name of sparkle in front of Ellen DeGeneres' Burbank studio this Thursday, March 13th.

Ellen wants all glitter banned!

I LOVE Ellen and was heartbroken when she started dissing glitter on her show because it is messy and gets everywhere. She even went on a jumbotron on Hillary Clinton's press rally and asked if she would ban glitter if Hills became our next Prez. I've blogged about it and sent letters to her explaining all the different kinds of glitters.

I want us crafters to educate Ellen and let her know about the many "safe sparkle" alternatives out there. We could help her choose the right glitter for her, so she will stop judging all glitter the same. It is LOOSE glitter she hates, so her fans need to know to send her other kinds of sparkle. Ellen is a sparkling chica, she deserves glitter that suits her!

OK...I know glitter won't be banned, but I thought it would be fun if all of us crafters stepped up with "safe sparkle" alternatives.

I have the power of Duncan Enterprises (Duncancrafts.com) behind me, we are all driving down there with signs and samples of non-messy glitter to show the public and ELLEN. We are sending out press releases to all the major news outlets.

I think Ellen would get a kick out of it and maybe even come outside to meet us!

So, basically, I'm in need of more bodies to join me! Interested??

Mucha gracias (holds scissors over heart in respect)!

Kathy :-)

p.S. Please email me at kathyATcraftychicaDOTcom for details if you are seriously interested in joining us! Please pass this on!

PEACE, LOVE, & GLITTER!!

On to the next adventure!

Tomorrow I head out to Califas again. Fresno to be exact, to - get this - MIX MY GLITTER COLORS! These are for the product line. After scouring the craft stores for every packaged speck of the shiny stuff, I came to the conclusion that my glitter botellas had to be muy especial. I'll be mixing hot pink with light pink, maybe a pinch of microfine holographic silver...

I don't know exactly how this will work. I mix glitter colors all the time at home, but I never measure. I'm thinking I should take a set of mini-measuring spoons with me to accomplish this very important task.

After I leave Duncan's office and got to my comfy hotel room, I have to dive into the final edits on my sewing book. And watch American Idol!

Also this week, I'm organizing a "practice safe sparkle" campaign in honor of Ellen DeGeneres. (see two posts down) I know in my heart that someone as lovely as Ellen secretly pines for the magical wonderment of these shiny flecks. I respect that she hates the loose variety, so I want to present her with samples of mess-free glitter gifts. That way she can tell her fans, "Sure, send me glitter, but only the squeeze on liquid kind..."

As my friend Julie Peterson says: "More shining, less whining!"

I'll be hanging out in front of her studio with a bunch of Los Angeles craftistas waving banners. So... if you happen to see me on CNN being hauled away in handcuffs, that's why. JK!! That's not against the law, is it?

Friday I come home in the early afternoon, and then I jet off to the other side of town to moderate a panel on turning your craft hobby into a business at Changing Hands Bookstore.
6:30 p.m.
6428 S McClintock Dr
Tempe, AZ 85283
480-730-0205

Saturday is VERY exciting. SXSW is going on in Austin, and BUST Magazine is hosting a party along with Elijah Wood as the DJ. The Crafty Chica product line is one of the sponsors. Jennifer Perkins will be there making luxurious eye masks. If you want to attend send an email to rsvp@bust.com.

Sigh. I have to miss this one. I'm a mom of two lovely kiddos, and I missed the first act of Maya's play Saturday night because we got in late from San Diego. The guilt is weighing heavier than a dictionary on an ant. (Ew.) Plus, this weekend, Patrick's band is performing in New Mexico. It's my turn to stay home, relax, and have some much needed cuddle time with DeAngelo and Maya. And the Chihuahuas!

2nd Annual Crafty Chica Cruise: Wrap up!

Assorted pix

It's taken me a good two days just to wind down from the fun we had. First of all, this group was twice as large as last year. Patrick and I drove from Phoenix to San Diego with his mom, Susie, and her cousin, Cecelia. I love road trips. After being married to Patrick for 18 years, we both learned from his mom that he was conceived on Halloween night. Explains a lot, and I mean that in a good way!!

As soon as we reached the port and started unloading our suitcases, I spotted the cruisers. I had never met them in person, only online, and pictres on our message board - but they all had a certain kind of crafty glow about them. Or they were wearing lots of wild handmade jewelry or clothing!

The morning before we left our hotel for the port, I realized I need to have some kind of icebreaker for our meet-and-greet cocktail party - or at least name tags! I'm learning as I go, OK? So we drove to Von's and I bought blank index cards, twine, and a hole puncher.

Once we docked, the chicas from the last cruise helped me make the impromptu necklace name badges. I also made little slips of paper, and each one had the name of one of the cruisers. I thought it would be fun if each person had a secret pal. It would be their job to get to know that person, and then make them a little gift during the week. We'd present them at the closing cocktail party.

Let me tell you about these cocktail parties. 90 minutes of free frou-frou drinks. The waiters walk over holding drink trays filled with colorful concoctions. Hello, rum punch! I passed out the tote bags and we exchanged names. We were off to a great start!

Krissi and her tote

Tuesday morning was our first full day of crafting. Carnival gave us the main conference room for almost the whole cruise, so it became our home base. We decorated our Crafty Chica totes with glitters and paints. I set out little bells on all the tables so every time someone did something they were proud of, they would ring the bell and show their masterpiece to the group.

The first bell ringer came from my mom-in-law. "I have a bell ringer", she told me. "This is the first time I've ever put glitter on anything."

I rang the bell and announced it to the group. They all cheered and clapped and sang out "Yay! She's no longer a glitter virgin!!!"

Later in the day we began working on our Create-A-Saints. These are plaster statues I designed for the new product line. There is a saint, and angel and a queen. You decorate it for something you want or are good at, like "The Queen of Clunky Jewelry", etc...These saints came out absolutely amazing.

Wednesday was a bit rough. We got word early morning that Patrick's Aunt Socorro had passed away from cancer. Patrick's mom was very sad, as were we, and it was especially hard being in Mexico, when the rest of the family is mourning in Phoenix. We made it a good, memorable day though. We went to Cabo Wabo in Cabo San Lucas and shared happy memories about Socorro. She loved Coors, so we ordered Pacificos and clinked our bottles in her honor. I went on to drink five cocktails that day, and Patrick and I drew Sharpie tattoos on each other's arms. Cindy Kovack taught the evening class and it gave me time to charge my batteries for the next day! The next morning I learned that students stayed in the room very late. Midnight crafting, love it!!!

Thursday was a marathon art day. We made these really cool journals and love shrines.
photo(64)

Oh! One of our cruisers, Julie, won a slot in the Carnival Legends show. She had to practice her Madonna performance for Friday night. Friday we hit up Ensenada, and then we had our exchange party, and then we watched Julie grace the huge stage and perform "Like A Virgin" in front of 1,000 people. She even gave a shout out to the chicas!

Sure, it was super sweet that our rooms got made up twice a day, and that the food was always yummy (they had a chocolate buffet!!), and our waiter, Carlos was a Peruvian dreamboat...but what really made my whole week? The people in our groups.

AND the chocolate dessert at dinner every night. It was like warm cake batter in a cup.
photo(8)

Anyway, we had:

Six mother/daughter sets
Four sibling sets
Three husband and wife sets
Two cancer survivors
Two people there on behalf of a loved one who passed away
Several people who came all by themselves, just to meet other crafty people!
And friend pairings too!

I had no idea how special this gathering would be for everyone involved. I choked up more than once thinking about it. It was so hard to say goodbye! Plus, there were many of us who had only known each other online. Like Yoli, Mala and Krissi. We chat all the with each other on MySpace, so it was fun to meet them in person. And then there were four ladies who returned from last year - Teresa, Corky, Alisa and Ann.

It makes me think that next year I want to do more meaningful projects, and make it a type of self-empowerment cruise, not all mushy style, but just art ideas that people will look at and say, "Making that changed my life!"

Crafty Chicas in action!
(Some of us pose for a picture)

I've barely scratched the surface. I'm so excited, I'm still in four-alarm giddy mode and I'm already making plans for next year's cruise. I do know aside from the cocktail parties, I want to add a chocolate tasting and a hand massage! Stay tuned for sign up time!

Kathy :-)

p.S. Please email me at kathy@craftychica.com for details if you are seriously interested in joining us! Please pass this on!

PEACE, LOVE, & GLITTER!!

PROJECT: DIY Party Favors

I'm revving up to share all the details of the cruise, but first I thought I'd post a project.

Planning the party of the century?

Take that extra step and make customized favors. I made these for the cruise participants so they would feel like queens of creativity!

My original intention was to purchase plastic crowns from the party store and be done with it, but my craftaholic tendencies took over when I spotted these mini tiaras. They work great for weddings, birthday parties and anniversaries.

Custom Party Favors - Tiaras
Supplies
1 bag of small wood hearts ( 3/4-inch each)
Color copies of small pictures
Glue stick
White craft glue
Loose glitter
1 package of mini tiaras
Hot glue gun
1 boa or lace ribbon

Directions
Cover the wood hearts with the images (1 picture per heart) using the glue stick. Using your fingertip, add a thin border of white craft glue around the edge of each heart and then pour glitter over it. Tap away excess. Set to dry.

Use the hot glue gun to attach the heart to the center of the tiara. Snip off a piece of boa or lace ribbon, about 1 inch long, and hot glue it to the back of the tiara, so it protrudes from the top.

Maze Game
Supplies
1 package of mini maze games
Craft knife
Color copies of picture to fit the size of the game
Scissors
Glue stick
Hot glue

Directions
Turn the game back side up. Carefully use the craft knife to remove the cardboard backing of the game. Don't lose the ball inside the game!

Use the backing as a template to cut out circles of your favorite pictures. Use the glue stick to affix the picture to the backing. Make sure the ends are sealed down. Replace the backing and add a dot of hot glue on the back ridge to seal it.

Variations

Instead of the tiaras or maze games, you also can make other kinds of party favors by using your own paper: party horns, mini Rubik's Cubes, ball paddles, lip balms, purse mirrors, mini notebooks, etc.

Cruise: students

Belen, her hubby Jesse, and Alice showing off their one-of-a-kind work!

Cruise: me lounging on the deck

Cruise: Michele's journal

Cruise: saint project

Here are our saints drying in the sunshine at the back of the boat.

La sacred Yoli!

Yoli is such a rock star thanks to her MySpace profile. I'm still giddy she came on the cruise. She even gave me a wrist cuff she made! Doesn't her book look fabulous?

Cruise: Mala es muy feliz!

Cruise: Krissi loves Crafty Chica glitter!

Krissi Sandvik is a fabricaholic, just like moi. She creates these wildly innovative quilts themed around her skelekitties!

Cruise: Lisette

I met Lisette two years ago when I taught a writer's shrine class in Miami. She stayed in touch with my site and signed up for this trip. I'm so glad she did, she made some super fun artwork, like journals and shrine boxes!

Cruise: Isabel

The adorable Isabel was the youngest crafty chica cruiser. She came with her mom, Ursula. Isabel saved up her babysitting money to help pay for the trip. She told me that the week before she left, she called all her clients and said "Hi! I can babysit this week if you need me!" so she would have spending money. She brought all kinds of cool supplies and clippings to use in her projects. She loves Audrey Hepburn, and even wore long strands of pearls while she worked on her projects!

Cruise!! Cindy Kovack

Here is a picture of the wonderful Cindy Kovack. She is a very popular teacher and artist and was kind enough to teach a class on the cruise! She also graciously carried half of our saints to the ship from Phoenix. For that, she will have good karma forever!

Mexican candy on a stick!

We saw these for sale at an Indio, CA mini-mart. Is it weird that I
want buy, like, 100 of them to give as swag? They even have a
Chihuahua as the logo!

Goodbye!

Well, we are off to San Diego for the 2nd Annual Crafty Chica Cruise!!

We have family staying at our house, but I don't think they'll be manning my MySpace or web site much! But I will be photo blogging the cruise all week here!

Once again, I have to send a HUGE thank you to Valerie, Lauren, Alyson, and Lindy from Duncan Enterprises for supplying us with all the Crafty Chica products! As well as all the other nice folks who did too! I'll be giving shout outs here!

Have a safe and happy week!!!

Love and glitter,
Kathy :-)

Sir Ozzy

Such a noble pet!

Princess Cha-Cha

She wears her crown well!

A view from the back.

So much for that new ball of yarn!

I thought I lost it, but it looks like Bootsie found it. It was even
wrapped around his wagging tail!
