Blurbs needed for new new sewing book!

(Tim Burton in The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy & Other Stories, 1997, from http://www.koikadit.net/)

I'm winding up my next book, which is all about artful stitching. It's for Potter Craft and will be a beautiful book (pub date is spring 09)! I'm looking for small "blurbs" from people to sprinkle throughout about various sewing experiences.

Something gone bad, a favorite memory, even a favorite book you read that has sewing in it, a lesson learned, a sewing circle you belong to, a trick you learned, etc.

Please send them to me! Keep them short - about a paragraph. If it is too long, it may be trimmed. Please send your NAME, AGE & CITY YOU LIVE IN, and it may be published in the book!
Send them HERE

I'm also looking for images of non-traditional sewing art. High end, really clever stuff that is gallery worthy for a special section of the book. Please send me a lo-res image and then if it is chosen, I'll ask for a hi-res.

Thanks! Please spread the word. Tell your moms and nanas too! Deadline is FRIDAY, JANUARY 4th!

Random Acts of Crafty Kindness

Last week I recieved an email from my cousin Stephanie about "random acts of kindness". We've all heard about it and probably have 'paid it forward' many times. But what I thought was so cool was her example of a Starbucks where one person paid for the person's coffee behind them - just because!

This is something I always wished I could do, but usually every single penny (I'm not kidding) is allocated to the essentials - family, roof over our head, meals, etc. But this year, the Murillo household has had many blessings. We haven't exactly hit the jackpot, but we are able to buy namebrand cereal these days! Yay, Kelloggs!

Who knows what the future holds. In the crazy state of this world, anything can change on a moment's notice. So if there was ever a time for me to splurge for someone else's Starbucks, it is now.

In past years, I've passed out handmade ornaments during the holiday season to anyone who was nice to me. This year because of lack of time to make merchandise, I went for gift cards and cold cash. And I didn't do it to people who were nice to me, but people who I thought deserved a happy surprise during their Christmas Eve work day.

So here is how I distributed them!

Meet Wanda.
This morning at 7:30 Patrick and I took the kids to breakfast at the Denny's by our house. Wanda was soooo sweet. She has a grey beehive, bright red lipstick, super flashy sequined earrings, and a Christmas pin that had blinking lights. After our meal, we paid and left her a 20% tip. I signed the slip, and asked the cashier if I could talk to Wanda. Wanda came over to the counter looking a bit frightened, wondering what the heck I wanted. I told her I was practicing random acts of kindness today, and I handed her a $10 bill. "Merry Christmas!" I said.

She squealed as if I were Oprah handing over a million dollar check. Wanda wove the bill in the air and annouced it to those around her. She thanked me over and over.

Here is Sandy.
I went to Target to buy the last of my gifts and chose four of the niftiest gift cards they had. The kind that play music and have games built into them. Sandy was my cashier and I asked her to ring up $5 on each one. The line was gawd awful long and I noticed the beads of sweat trickling just under her hairline. I paid, and she handed me the reciept with a cheery "Merry Christmas!"

I reached in the bag and pulled out one of the gift cards and presented it to her and gave my RAOK spiel. She threw her arms in the air and went "Woo-eeee! Thank you!!" She then looked around sneakily and stuffed the gift card in her pants pocket.

Here you go, pretty Starbucks girl.
I was at Starbucks and I saw the girl on the left making a coffee drink. Watching her was a guy with a scowl on his face and two bitchy-looking chicks next to him - all giving the barista stink eye. Pretty Starbucks girl's face showed she felt their hatred. She finished the drink and set it on the counter and told him: "Here you go, Sorry about that, I hope this one is better..." Dude snatched the drink and said "It better be right, I can't believe you can't even make a f...... coffee drink!" He then stormed out with his chicks behind him, giving her dirty looks the whole time. She blinked away tears and proceeded to tell this other man that the guy didn't think his drink had enough espresso in it, even though she made it the right way. She said she made him a whole new drink with an extra shot just to please him, at no charge, and he still was mad. She was super shaken up.

Three drinks later, she called out my name and I gave her the card and told her not to let that guy ruin her day, that she was doing a great job. She relaxed in that instant, giggled and thanked me. I think it was her dad standing near by because he came over and told me thank you too. I asked to take her picture for my blog and she said "Here, let me get my friend in the picture too!"

The next card I gave to my sister Theresa to give out. As of this moment she said she hasn't found anyone worthy of the card yet, and that is after along day of shopping. Sometimes it is not about finding nice people, it can be about seeing someone who could use a little pick-me-up. Maybe one little gesture will help them change their 'tude.

OK, the last card was kinda, um, uneventful.

When I was in high school, I used to work at a Jack-in-the-Box and always got stuck working on Christmas Eve. So I decided to visit that same JITB and give a card to the window clerk. I ordered our food (it was a very unhealthy Christmas Eve in case you didn't notice) and pulled up to the window.

ME: "Hi! When I was in high school, I used work at this very window on Christmas Eve! Here is a $5 gift card - just because! Merry Christmas!"

HIM: "Oh. Ok. (he tosses it on the cash register) Can you pull to the side and we'll bring your order out to you."

So that one didn't exactly have the Frank Capra holiday magic, but it's cool. Maybe he'll buy something that makes him happy, and he'll think of this random act of kindness that came his way

I titled this blog post "selfish surprise" because it totally is selfish, just like Oprah says. It feels so GOOD to do something nice just out of the blue. The rush on people's faces when you tell them what you are doing...dang, you just want to do it over and over.

I truly hope someday I reach a position where I can give more than $5 gift cards!!

Until then, they will do just fine.

Chica Christmas #25: Wish Upon A Star Bracelet

This is the season for magic, dreams and wishes. Everyone has a secret plan they hope will come to fruition some day. This little bracelet will help. The idea is to give the bracelet to someone and tell the person to wish upon the star and then tie the bracelet around the wrist or ankle. When the thread wears down and breaks, the star charm will be released into the universe and soon the recipient's wish will come true!

Supplies:

1 long piece of thread (about 24 inches)
1 star charm
1 piece of colorful card stock with the directions written on it
Small bracelet gift box
Craft paint

Directions: Paint and decorate the box and set aside to dry. Double the thread and slide on the charm. Leave the ends open so the person can tie it on. Place the bracelet in the box with the directions.

Tip: Instead of just one bracelet, give your friend two so they can pass one on as well. Better yet, give them several to use throughout the month.

Nothing can stop me, not even a toothache!

I didn't want to believe it at first.

I figured maybe I got a popcorn kernal stuck in my gums. Or perhaps I bit my cheek.

By Thursday night, I knew the truth: toothache.

Friday morning I ever-so-reluctantly dragged my aching body into the dentist. I don't do well with professional tooth pickers. My last denist's name was Dr. Lamb. I chose him for his name, thinking he would have a gentle bedside manner. Come to find out, he was more like "Silence of Dr. Lamb" - when this went down.

I haven't been back in the upside chair since. But this time I knew I had to go. My jaw ached, so did my cheek and even my eye socket. So said my prayers and went to my mom's dentist. Thank goodness it was a much better experience, except for the the fact that I have a nasty infection in one of my wisdom teeth. AND that I have a whole extra set of wisdom teeth!

I've been on antibiotics and Vicodin since yesterday, pushing through the pain. I went all week in pain and functioned perfectly, so I tried to continue. But it is different when the doctor tells you "Ouch! How long have you been going with this, you should be crying in bed right now!"

Patrick has been so sweet. Every six hours, including midnight and 6 am, he disperses my pill and water, along with a kiss and hug. Maya set up the XBOX so I can watch movies in between my drug-induced naps. DeAngelo gives me a thumbs up everytime I get up for water.

I'm so bummed because all I want to do is make art or clean the house or better yet, SHOP!

I'm in between pills right now, so I'm blogging to get up more project posts before Tuesday. Like anyone is really reading blogs right now, everyone is out wrapping gifts, sipping on mulled cidar or partying - right?

Chica Christmas #23: Mini-Toy Wreath

(Yes, that is my front door, and yes it is teal.)

Here is a new "Crafting With the Chica" holiday video that went up this week on LifetimeTV.

I'm just not into "pretty" decorations when it comes to decking out my house in December. This wreath proves that. I actually got inspired for this project last year when my friend Margot sent me a bag of crafty goodies. There were mini-tubes of toothpastes, plastic lemons, etc. I added in some of my own items too and the result is a kooky, kitschy, but still quite festive holiday wreath. And half way through, I even give a shout out to Margot! Thank you again for the treats, I love them!!

Here is the video. If it does not play, just click here to see it on the LifetimeTV.com site.

Chica Christmas #22: Accidental Crocheted Cap

Never toss out a mistake! That is my lesson of the week.
I was so excited that my friend Vickie Howell launched her own line of yarns, called Craft. Rock. Love. - and that she even named one after me:

$10.50, Chica 775

She sent me a package with samples and I couldn't wait to crochet something. I happened to be leaving out of town that day, and took the yarn and a hook. I decided on a simple skullcap - something I could finish by the end of the plane ride. I must have been either too excited or too stressed, because the hat came out two times larger than I wanted. So much for my math skills. When I got home, I couldn't bear to unravel it all. A crafty friend suggested I turn it inside out and take it in with my sewing machine's overlock function. A risky move, but I went for it.

I loved the result! The effect was a small "ruffle" looking seam. So I repeated the stitch all around the hat. Not only did it make for the perfect skullcap, it also has a funky ribbed-like texture. My advice? The next time you think a craft project is shot, step back and look at it from a new perspective, see what you can do to make it work. Maybe you'll invent a new technique! As far as this cap, it's a great project to make as a last minute gift because it is super simple!

NOTE: I've been crocheting for years, but never use patterns, so I tired my best to type this out for you, but feel free to adjust as needed!

Supplies:
2 skeins of red cotton yarn
Red thread
1 H-8 crochet hook
Scissors
Sewing machine

Directions:
Round 1: Work 15 single crochet (sc) into ring. Round 2: Begin working through back loop only, 14 single crochet in each stitch (st) around. Round 3: Work 14 triple crochet in each stitch around. Continue until the hat is as long as you desire. I made my down to my eyebrows, so I could flip up the hem. Snip and tie off the end. Turn the hat inside out. Using the overlock or zigzag function on your sewing machine, sew seams vertically around the hat. Snip excess threads. Wear and enjoy!

12 Days of Chica Lit: Christmas Kiss

Last year I participated in 12 Days of Chica Lit! Here is my mini-story. *Bites nails* This is only the third fiction piece I've written in a long time, be gentle on me!
***

Christmas Kiss
by Kathy Cano-Murillo

“You? Roller derby? Ha. No way, I’m not buying it,” Colin laughed as he snipped open a 5-pound foil bag of Sumatra coffee beans and poured them into the wood barrel. A few spilled over the side.

“Swear to God on my bejeweled star helmet,” Anjelica Chavez replied to her Cork and Cuppa co-worker as he tossed the empty bag in the trash. She prepped for the afternoon rush by stacking a pyramid of clear mugs on the shelf above the cash register. “My derby name is Gloria Esteponyou - you pass me on the rink and you’ll feel my rhythm of the beat! I’m the most feared jammer that Las Bandidas del Fuego has ever had. I’ve scored more points than Britney Spears’ driving record.”

“Cute.” Colin deadpanned as he wiped his hands on his apron. “Well, Miss Gloria - I’m going downstairs to hang the mistletoe above the wine bar. You know how rowdy the Christmas Eve Chardonnay crowd gets if we forget it. And I spilled some beans on the floor. You better sweep ’em up before you slip.”

Anjelica didn’t hear him. She opened a two-pack of chocolate graham crackers, leaned against the counter, and stared longingly into the eatery’s florescent lights. “I wish I could get lucky under the mistletoe tonight,” she cooed as she removed a treat from the cellophane sleeve. “Man, I’d do anything for a Christmas kiss from Kingston. I invited him to meet me after work, you know. I doubt he comes. He probably has a date with one of his cutesy paralegals.” She popped a cookie in her mouth.

Colin folded his arms and smiled as if he had just solved a Scooby Doo mystery. “Ahh, so that’s why you’re all Hollywood today in that Marilyn dress and set of hootchie heels. I thought you were miss hardcore roller derby queen? You should just clobber him and drag him to the wine room. Trip him under the mistletoe, and lay one on him. Point scored.” Colin playfully punched Anjelica’s arm, and dashed out through the door and ran down the outside stairs.

Anjelica may have been roller derby royalty by night, but by day the world knew her as the quirky coffee bar chick with pigtails, matte red lipstick, and polka-dot Converse sneakers.

Not tonight though, thanks to Kingston and his charming ways.

She’d had a mad crush on him for months. What a dreadful, delicious soul he was. He could pass as Ewan McGregor’s double, and even more lethal - he visited the coffee bar every other day and would hang out for her entire shift. And he walked her to her car. Oh, the torture! The two didn’t have a thread of anything in common, yet they never ran out of topics to argue or laugh over. She savored each minute with Kingston as much as she savored winning her roller derby bouts.

A solid 11 years older than her 23, Kingston ran a successful law practice as his livelihood, and she an espresso machine. Anjelica knew he ranked out of her league so she never felt intimidated around him. Still, she didn’t dare spill about her double life with Las Bandidas, although she figured he wondered where her bruises came from. He never asked. He probably didn’t take her serious as a milk frothing barista, much less the silly Gloria Esteponyou. She convinced him she worked on launching a line of graffiti dresses in her spare time, which she really did plan to do.

Yesterday something odd happened that made her insides quiver.

Somewhere between a discussion about London’s Covent Garden and the fate of Disney stars, he asked if she had a boyfriend. Where the heck did that come from?, she thought. She giggled and replied no, expecting him to inform her of his girlfriend or fiancé. Instead he raised one of his bushy eyebrows and suggestively winked. It caught her so off guard that she stiffened up like a drink stirrer. She grabbed a dishtowel, and nervously wiped down the counter top. She didn’t even notice the towel was peppered with coffee grounds.

“Uh, Kingston, I have a lot of work to do tonight. I have to - um, redo all the coffee bin labels in red and green markers for the holidays,” she said in a matter-of-fact tone. She wouldn’t let him lead her on just for his own amusement. She bet he acted this way to every girl he knew. She didn’t want their friendship tainted and hoped by the awkward moment would soon be forgotten.

He stood up from the barstool and blinked at her with his signature droopy eyelids. “Sorry about that, Jelica. Didn’t mean to be nosy.” He reached in his pocket for his keys and shook them in his palm. “Well, guess I’m off then. Have a great Christmas, OK? Get away from that coffee for awhile and enjoy the holiday.”

Jelica? He called her Jelica? A nickname! Anjelica’s mind danced with the thought that maybe he might like her too. She glanced up at him. He towered in his crisp charcoal grey suit, smelling like expensive aftershave that made her tense up from the inside out. Nope, impossible, she concluded. He’d never dig on her. Sitting and chatting over a cappuccino and biscotti was one thing, but he’d never take her out in his scene.

“OK, cool,” she said, rinsing the towel in the sink. “Have a nice one too.”

He nodded, motioned a small salute and walked through the side door.

Chrissie Hynde’s haunting version of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas piped through the Cork and Cuppa’s sound system. The lyrics “let your heart be light” seeped under Anjelica’s skin, and a tingling sensation spread across her face. She threw down the towel and raced out the door after Kingston. She stopped. He must have sprinted down the stairs and off the property, because she saw that he had already reached his car and opened his door.

“Hey Kingston!” Anjelica yelled from the upstairs balcony, cupping her hands around her mouth. Her knees knocked from both fear and chilly weather.

He stopped, turned and tilted his head up in her direction. “Yah?” he asked.

“I get off work at 6 tomorrow, and we always have a Christmas Eve party here. I’m making my famous champurrado con cafe. Wanna come?”

Where that came from, she had no idea. But the pause between her question and his answer came faster than expected.

“I’d like that! I’ll be here at 6. See you then!”

***

Anjelica told herself she could roll like Kingston, dress all slick and stuff. In fact, she used her roller derby routine for motivation - except she gave it the girlie girl twist. Her uniform tonight consisted of a cherry red clingy cocktail dress and embroidered leather stilettos to match. She unleashed her ponytails to let her naturally curly hair work it’s magic on her shoulders. Anjelica wanted Kingston to see her as someone more than just the nighttime coffee girl. And whether it was her hand, cheek or lips - she’d make sure she’d score that Christmas kiss. Just like the winning point at a championship bout. Maybe she’d even tell him about her alter ego too. Maybe not yet.

At 5:45, Anjelica went to the restroom for a quality control once over. She then manned her battle station at the coffee bar. Kingston always entered through the same side door, so at 5:55 she posed pinup girl style against the counter, ready to launch the shock and awe.

Through the door’s frosted window, she saw a shadow move up the stairs. She braced herself, let out an anxiety sigh, tossed back her tresses and let her inner seductress shine through. “Spanx, don’t let me down!,” she thought.

It opened, and Colin popped his head through the crack. “Hey, chop-chop. I need a double capp for a lady in the wine room! Damn girl, you look hot. If Kingston doesn’t give you a kiss tonight, he’s gotta be gay.”

“Hurry and get out! He’ll be here any second!” she snapped, shooing Colin away. She then heard a familiar voice come from afar.

“You talking about me over there?”

Anjelica gasped. Crap! Kingston had come up the stairs on the other side of the room. He had to walk a good 30 feet across the wood floor to reach her. She gulped, smoothed her dress and pivoted on her heel to meet him half way. “Think slinky,” she thought.

That would have worked well - except her heel crunched an espresso bean on the floor. She lifted her foot, regained her balance, just as her other shoe stepped on another bean. The movement reminded Anjelica of the time she played Twister with her little sister. Crouch forward... bend back... Anything to hang on to her dignity. No luck. She clawed at the air to catch her fall as her feet slipped out from under her.

BOOM!

She landed on her butt, legs spread apart, hands on her head. She squinted to see Kingston intrigued by a table display of Italian coffee mugs. He held one up and read the label on the bottom. Did he not see the fall, or did he pretend not to see it? She didn’t have time to think. She crawled like an escaped crab out the side door, hoping he wouldn’t glance her way.

Anjelica made it down the outside stairs and burst into the wine room, panting. Her legs wobbled like noodles, she held her shoes in one hand, and gripped the doorframe with the other, as if she had just survived a robbery. Dozens of patrons stopped their conversation and wine sipping to watch.

“Hide me, Colin, hurry!” she begged. “I don’t want Kingston to find me!”

“Oh my God.” Colin said, shocked. “You did trip him and kiss him, didn’t you? You really are Gloria Esteponyou! Woo-hoo, rock on!”

Just then they heard Kingston ask a female employee, “Hi, I’m looking for Anjelica, I just saw her upstairs and then she just disappeared...”

“Try the wine room,” the lady replied.

Anjelica noticed a tiny broom closet next to the beer case display. She quickly slipped in and put her finger over her mouth to shhh Colin. She pulled the door closed. Damn, it stank in there. She’d never get that bleach smell out of her dress! How would she explain all this to Kingston? Maybe that an emergency came up? Anything except that she fell flat on her ass. How friggin’ humiliating, she thought. Sure, the roller derby crowd saw her pull off that move all the time, but Kingston was not among them.

“Hey, is Anjelica in here?” she heard him ask Colin. “I’m supposed to meet her and I think she ditched me.”

She held her breath and swore to tell him the truth next time he came in the shop.

Outside the room, Colin decided to have some fun. “Hmm. Well. Why don’t I try her cell. Perhaps she is CLOSE BY,” Colin replied, clearing his throat. He picked up the phone and dialed Anjelica’s cell. Gloria Estefan’s “Conga” chimed from out of the broom closet.

“Aw, nevermind,” Kingston said, dejected. “I’m outta here. Tell her I said Merry Christmas.”

The sauced up wine crowd wouldn’t hear of it.

“She’s in the broom closet!” one of them whispered-shouted.
“Look behind that little door!” another slurred.

Anjelica rubbed her aching shoulder and rolled her eyes. “Damn those wine drinkers!” Just then, the door creaked opened and Kingston stood before her.

Anjelica let out a shaky smile and a mini-wave of shame. “Hi.”

He shrugged. “Anjelica, what’s up? Why did you run away? If you changed your mind, you could have just left a message instead of this.”

She climbed out of the closet and lowered her chin to stare at the ground. Colin picked a mop fuzzy from her now tousled hair.

“I saw you coming towards me,” she began to explain to Kingston. “And I started to walk, but I fell. Right there in front of you. It was awful. I thought you saw me, and I wanted to die. I wanted the night to be perfect. I wanted to be irresistible and classy so you’d see me as more than just your espresso enabler. And there’s something I haven’t told you yet about me ---”

Kingston placed his hands on her cheeks, pulled her face up to his and greeted her lips with his. “I didn’t see it. And you are perfect. I know all about you, Gloria Esteponyou, Las Bandidas best jammer. And just for the record, I’ve seen you fall many times. I gotta say, you’re quite graceful on that track. Even when you get elbowed in the gut.”

Anjelica caught her breath and let out a confused smile. “Wha...How do you know?”

He tapped her nose with his finger. “My sister is Greta Von Clobberher, a blocker for the Busty Bruiserinas. I go to all her bouts. And... yours too. She told me you work here. I never brought it up because I didn’t know if it was top secret or whatever. I just knew I wanted to go out with you. I couldn’t figure out how to get through, you’re always so guarded.”

“So all this time we could have been kissing instead of drinking all that coffee?” Anjelica asked as she slid her hands up his chest.

Kingston scratched his chin. “Well, yah, we could have. But I’m glad it happened this way. Believe me. It’s every guy’s fantasy to kiss a roller derby girl under the mistletoe,” He kissed her again, this time twice as long.

Colin whisked by with a second round of Chardonnay for the anxious customers. As he passed Anjelica, he whispered, “Looks like someone got their Christmas kiss after all. And you didn’t even have to trip him!”

The end.

Chica Christmas #20: Quilted Cards

Homemade Christmas cards are a serious commitment. You have to come up with a brazilliant design, purchase all of the supplies and then set up an assembly line in your home. It's worth it, because in the end, each card is a heartfelt masterpiece of inspired art.

When it comes to card design, the obvious and easiest choice is to go with paper collages, especially because there are so many delectable offerings of rub-on letters, stamps, punches, stickers, papers and photos. I often make handmade cards, but this season, I wanted to try something different. So I settled on creating all my cards using fabric, yarn and thread. My mission was to create greetings that had a quilted, homespun look but were still slick enough for the recipient to hang in a frame as a decoration for their home.

To achieve this look, you'll need to convert your photos into fabric. There are many methods, but the quickest is to pick up a package of fabric sheets at the craft or sewing store. These are pieces of fabric affixed to paper that are stiff enough to run through your home printer. After printing your scanned or photocopied picture onto the fabric sheet, peel away the paper and voilà! You have your picture printed onto fabric! Fabric paper also can be made at home by ironing lightweight cotton to the shiny side of freezer paper and then cutting it to the size of 8 1/2 by 11 inches.

I went with a vintage theme with the help of old-fashioned collage sheets I found at artchixstudio.com. This project will take a bit of sweat and labor. If that is too much to tackle, you can settle on making one or two and then framing them and giving them as gifts, or make smaller versions for use as tags or place-card holders.

Fabric Quilted Christmas cards

Supplies

Photos

Color copier or scanner

White fabric sheets for the computer

Decorative-edge scissors

Assorted fabrics

Glue stick

Blank cards or cardstock cut and folded into cards

Sewing machine or a needle and thread

Batting

Straight pins

Yarns and fibers

Embellishments

Directions: Put your photos in the copier/scanner and set the print quality to the highest resolution. Insert the fabric sheet into your printer according to package directions (usually face down). Print the images, cut them out and remove the paper backing. Set aside.

Cut a piece of fabric for the background of your card (use the decorative-edge scissors). Use the glue stick to lightly tack it to the front of the card. Sew the fabric in place. You can sew the edges in a curvy border or add dimension by sewing all over the surface of the fabric. Cut any loose strands.

Once you have the background in place, it's time to add the image. Cut a piece of batting to go under it to give it a quilted look. Pin and then sew the image to larger piece of fabric, with the batting sandwiched between. Pin and then sew the image to the center of the card. Sew designs inside the image to make it look puffier.

Sew yarn as a border, or add other kinds of embellishments.

Variation: To make your card stand out even more, package it with a frame that the recipient can use to display the card after they read it.

Heartburn and a headache

Is it OK if I vent here for a bit? I have serious heartburn and a throbbing headache right now, so I'm blogging to see if it helps. I promise to end on a happy note, some way, some how.

Drumroll, please...

We shipped out fifty boxes and dusted off our hands thinking that was the end of the holiday orders.

Wrong.

All weekend new orders have been coming in through our online store. They HAVE to be shipped tomorrow in order to make it to their destinations by Christmas, which means they all HAVE to be made tonight. We've been working around the clock for several months now. I'm freakin' tired already! BUT - I am grateful for the business and the people who like our art enough to spend their money on it. But I'm still freakin' tired. I need a break from sprinkling glitter. There. I said it. Never thought those words would come out of my mouth!

And then the puppy is still pooping all over the house no matter how much we follow him around. It's like he turns invisible to do his business, and next thing you know I'm stepping in it and gagging.

And the kids. Arguing with eachother all weekend. I've already broken up a Swiffer showdown in the hallway, I've slid across the tile floor on a mini-rubber ball, and hollered at Maya for 1. pushing DeAngelo into the door resulting in breaking my craft prpject for next week's newspaper column which I will have to remake immediately, and 2. breaking the clippy thing on the back of my iPhone.

Oh, that's nothing! She happened to read me her "inantimate object memory" monologue for theatre class tomorrow. She is bringing a broken Christmas tree ornament because the story she chose to recite consists of the time I got so mad at DeAngelo for his bad report card that I "threw the Christmas tree across the family room".

Long story. But you would have done the same thing! He was a freshman in high school and his math class had brought on many, many tears and war cries throughout the semester. He swore up and down that he had finally turned in all his homework and was getting a B. The report card came, he hid it, I found it after searching like a ninja spy - and when I confronted him about why he lied - all he could do was shrug and say "I don't know" over and over. It was like talking to the wall. He had no remorse. I told him if he didn't take math seriously he would end up working at a fast food restaurant all his life. He said "I don't mind doing that."

Grrrr...
I was PMSing that day. The tree was fake and lightweight. And close by. I knocked it over in a fit of Mommy rage. I remember his mouth dropping in shock, along with Maya's. Yes, yes, yes, I regret it. Mostly because now Maya is sharing a highly exaggerated version to her whole class about the time I "THREW the tree like The Incredible Hulk across the family room".

Inantimate object memory monologue? I suggested she bring in the Swiffer, the puppy poop, or the broken iPhone clippy thing.

Ah, I think that is the end of my gripe list. So I'll fast forward to happier times. Saturday Patrick and I had a little appreciation night for local folks who have been supporting us over the years. He performed four sets at Cien Agaves Restaurant and in between each song he called out a Loteria card. Earlier I had handed everyone a card, so everyone waited with baited breath (kinda sorta) to see who would win exciting things like an ornament or a CD. Everyone was so nice and appreciative! Even some of our family came out!

Here is Sarah, the drummer's girlfriend. Her alter ego is "Certified Lunachick". She's a roller derby girl and she is showing off her signature scowl!

OK, this next picture shows just how tight the crafty scene is here. This is my friend Stacia who just moved here from New Mexico. She brought me a tree she made. And it just so happened, I had a tree I made. So right there in the club, on the dance floor, right by where the free tequila samples were being passed out, we traded our handmade trees!

And this last photo is from a restaurant. Our waiter showed us this oragami tip he recieved from a customer. He told us how meaningful it was that someone went out of their way to fold their money for him. I thought it was cute too so I thought I'd share it.

Before you click away from here thinking "Oh my gosh, Kathy has anger management problems..." just know it was a one time incident. I've never thrown a tree since!

Chica Christmas 17, 18 & 19: Candy Crafts!

I've always had a fascination with candy, so much that I even like to craft with it. You saw the Snowflake Bark I made earlier this month, but have you seen the previous sugar-inspired concoctions on this site?

Let me refresh your memory....

Candy Kebobs!

These are so cute because you can make use of all the bright colored gummy candies out there and they look great displayed on a tray or in a tall cylander vase. I bet Willy Wonka's mouth is watering right at this very moment!

Chocolate Andes Mint Tree!

This is a design I created in 2004. The funniest thing about this project is my memory of demonstrating it on the live local news. I had it pre-prepared the process in stages, one of which was a tree-shaped Rice Krispie Treat base that I was going to add the chocolate on to. Well, the station had a new anchor, and during the commerical break he walked over, said "I love Rice Krispie Treats!" - picked up the tree with his chunky man hands, and took a huge bite out of it! I squealed in horror and had only a matter of seconds to get my shizizzle together before the camera light turned on. I shooed him away, and quickly smashed the tree back into a tree shape the best I could, and then wiped my gooey hands off on the back on my expensive black skirt. The rest went off without a hitch. He didn't last too long at the station. Ironically, last I heard, he is working as a host for an HGTV show!

And last, here is my Snickers Tree.

I didn't invent this idea. In 2004, I was in New York City and I stopped in Dylan's Candy Bar (LOVE that place!) and they had the whole place decked out with these candy trees. They were $30-40 bucks and I decided to make my own for about $10.

Over the years, I've had hearty handfuls of candy-themed crafty ideas, but I didn't want to overwhelm you! Three is a good place to start!

Chica Christmas #16: Festive Spheres

Sphere's a festive feature

Kathy Murillo
Special for the Republic
Dec. 14, 2007 11:59 AM

If you are in search of a memorable tabletop adornment, the solution is easier than you think.

Next time you are at the craft store, pick up some round papier-mâché ornaments and use them as the foundation for festive holiday spheres.

Once decorated, they can be displayed in a large clear vase or box, a bowl, platter or basket. The idea is to decorate each one in a contrasting style.

This is a great way to make use of straggler supplies or even wrapping paper taking up space in your workroom.

I went with paint, crystals and decoupage, but you also could work magic with mosaics, dimensional paints and more.

Centerpiece Holiday Spheres
Supplies
5-6 papier-mâché ball ornaments
Assorted craft paints
Brush
Clothespins
Decoupage medium
White glitter
Foil leafing
Decorative paper
Adhesive
Small clear crystals
Metallic mini-stars
Scissors

Directions
Paint the ball ornaments with a base coat in the desired colors. Use clothespins to hang them by the thread to dry.

Decorate each ball in a contrasting design - for example, paint one white. After it dries, cover it with decoupage medium and pour white glitter over it.

On another, follow directions on the foil leaf package to make the ball silver accented. On another, decoupage with pictures.

Apply dots of adhesive on another and then apply small crystals. Continue decorating the balls until you like the results. Hang to dry, and then snip off the thread. Display in a pretty bowl or centerpiece dish.

Note: Buy extra ball ornaments and use non-holiday paper and accents for a centerpiece to use in January.

Chica Christmas #15: Podcasts!

I'm really slacking on the "40 Days of a Chica Christmas" thing. So I'm cranking up the speed tonight and posting some extras.

Around this time last year, I was sitting here talking in a microphone, recording holiday podcasts. I noticed they still get a lot of hits, so I think I'll repost them for anyone who has missed them!

Crafty Chica Holiday Podcast #1

Crafty Chica Holiday Podcast #2: Fat Girl Confessions

Crafty Chica Holiday Podcast #3

They are also on iTunes, in case you want to download them on your iPod! What do you think - should I record some new shows? Are you Crafty Chica'd out yet??

Chica Christmas #14: Crafty hook ups

There is a lot of crafting going on this time of year. But no one should be sprinkling glitter all alone, that's a crime! They should join or start a craft group!

When I launched the Crafty Chica web site in 2001, I met all kinds of other creative women from around the country. Vickie Howell, Christy Petterson, Jean Railla, Jenny Hart, Susan Beal, Jennifer Perkins, gosh the list goes on and on... I was always so bummed that they lived in cities that had cool, blossoming craft scenes, while here in Phoenix, I just couldn't find the hook up no matter how hard I tried. That's why my friend Tracy and I started the Phoenix Fridas in 2004. I'm sure there was a scene happening, but I was missing it somehow.

Wow, things have changed!!

Fast forward to NOW. I'm soooo proud of the crafty achievements that have come out of my 602 hood. In the past year, a handful of strong, determined, crafty, artful, uplifting collectives have sprouted, and are hardcore thriving!

I had the honor of spending an afternoon with The Phoenix Craft Mafia this past week. We hung out at the Duck and Decanter and swapped stories about yarn, beading, sewing, and brownies too. We even traded ornaments! You must go check out the PCM web site to see all the goods that these talented ladies are making.

(Me with PCM members Mary, Tressa and Astrid)

Tonight I was a featured speaker for this month's Phoenix DIY Meeting. This is a new meet up that is really taking off.

I've spent so many years yakking away on message boards and blogs and such, that I forgot how nervous I get in front of a crowd of my peers. The room was full with a nice ratio of men and women, all with that look of "I'm all about making art" on their faces, which gives me - as Posh Spice would say - may-jah goosebumps. After my portion, I had to split to pick up Maya from her orchestra concert, but I did get to chat with a few folks. I'm looking forward to next month's meeting. I finally got to meet Stacey from The Arizona Crafty Burrito Collective. This is a groups of artists who all sell superfly wares on Etsy.

I also found another crafty homegirl in Lisa Jacobs of StickerClubGirl.com. She has launched a new collective called Conspire. Conspire is more than just a craft group. It is a cooperative art space in downtown Phoenix (901 N 5TH ST on the NE corner of 5th St and Garfield) that embraces fashion, art, politics and coffee. Read more about it HERE.

And don't forget about the Phoenix Chapter of Church of Craft!

All these groups have me super excited and way motivated. I can h ardly wait for our next Phoenix Fridas meeting so I can share all this juicy info. Personally, I think we need to have one big honkin' Phoenix art and craft show that features all of our groups. I chatted about it on Sunday with Mary, Tressa and Astrid from PCM, and Stacey tonight. Everyone nodded in agreement. If any Phoenix crafty folks want to join in, send me a note so we can get this rolling. Seriously. i used to work as an event planner back inthe day, so I know I can help put something together. We can pick a spot so we can all show off and sell our stuff on a gorgeous March afternoon. Or maybe a First Fridays night??

Regardless - Just think handmade. If you aren't into making anything just yet, then at least buy handmade. If not from your hometown, then from a local boutique that sells handmade goods. Or look online!

I bet you've already heard about the Buy Handmade movement going on right now. If not, here is a head's up! You know, I used to always give handmade gifts to family members, but then someone told me one year "Kathy, Buy real gifts, please! Not crafts!"
That broke my spirit big time. So I resorted to making ornaments and handing them out to random strangers who I know wouldn't complain. I also make ornaments and use them as gift box decorations for my family members, so at least there is a little handmade touch. This year, thanks to the Buy Handmade campaign, I'm revisiting my roots and making my gifts! Except for my teens. They'd totally revolt.

I Took The Handmade Pledge! BuyHandmade.org

OK, so I've loaded you up with info on Phoenix craft groups (the ones I know of). If you don't live in the area, take time to check out your own scene and maybe even spark something up. It doesn't have to be all fancy and organized. Just buzz a few friends, get together at a restaurant or coffeehouse and share stitches.

Yikes! speaking of stitches, I forgot to mention the Phoenix Stitch-N-Bitch!

12 Days of Chica Lit

When I'm not crafting, I'm writing novels!

Well, I wrote one anyway. And it is going to be published in the summer of 2009 by Grand Central Publishing. The same publisher for authors such as Steven Colbert, Amy Sedaris, Nicolas Sparks! It feels so good to type that!

A HUGE inspiration for my fiction writing comes from a some talented Latina authors I met over the past couple of years, thanks to my friend Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez, the "Godmother of Chica Lit" according to Time Magazine!

Alisa held a Chica Lit writer's conference in Miami in 2006, and people came from all over the country to meet up and share their book writing adventures. We've all kept in touch, and last October a few of us rolled out The Chica Lit Ghost Story Blog Tour - and it was a huge success.

Well, now 12 of us are doing it again - holiday style!

Here is the line up. I'm talking 12 days of mini-stories that celebrate December cheer. The blog tour began today with Mary Castillo! There are prizes too! My turn is Tuesday, the 18th and I'm already biting my glitter-encrusted nails!

Chica Christmas #12: Holiday Canvas Art

Chica Christmas #12 of 40!

(Photo property of DuncanCrafts.com)

Last week when I was at Duncan, I was cleaning up my work area and came across these holiday canvases I made for a magazine assignment. I forgot how cute they came out!! I brought them home, hung them up and decided to share them with you! I have them hung on my wall in a block of four, but this picture gives them much more justice.

I just took four blank canvases, painted them in contrasting colors, glued on the Boho appliques in the center of each one and trimmed the backgrounds in glitter, and added dimensional accents with Tulip 3D Fashion Paint. The trick to this look is the contrast. Holiday decor doesn't always have to be only green and red. I added in white and gold and the colors really played off eachother well.

Click on the link below for the detailed directions and product list. I swear, you can whip these out in no time at all. I think they would make a cute hostess gift or party favor!

Healthy puppies! The Cruise! Target!

Whew, thank you for all your support for our little Bootsie! We went to the vet and he does not have parvo, or anything like it!! He is growing super fast and that is why his body is so skinny. And he is pooped out (literally). Today he was back to his bouncy self and we have put him on a new diet (chicken broth over his dry food) to help him eat. And that was the magic trick! I was soooo worried. I thought he had parvo, and that he gave it to our other dogs and that by this time next week, they would all be goners. I cried and cried all night on Sunday. I finally took a Tylenol PM at 3:30 a.m., by the time I woke up, Bootsie was back to his silly self. He reminded me of the kids when they were little. They would be on their death bed, we'd race to the ER, get there and they'd be all happy and chatty, and the doctor would ask "So, um - whats wrong with them??"

Anyway, I'm so happy all is well!!! What a way to start off a birthday!!

Speaking of brthday, mine rocked yesterday. I got so many wonderful shout outs, emails, cards, calls, gifts from all kinds of cool people. The kids baked me cupcakes and I ate one in everyone's honor!! I am so grateful, thank you!!!

OK, now down to business! The cruise! The cruise!

THIS SATURDAY, December 15th, is the last day to sign up to get the discount rate. So if you are considering going, please sign up here. Read all the details about workshops HERE. We already have a nice amount of people signed up and we are going to have a blast. Last year was a riot and I know this year will be even better. Mexico, crafting, 24/7 food buffets, freeglitter - what more can you ask for?

OK, last - if you are looking for a handmade gift this season, Target is still selling my jewelry! This week they are on sale! The Religious Ribbon Necklace is really cute and affordably priced!

Ok, I'm off to get some much-needed work done. Thank you again for all the good vibes about my little doggie, they helped!!!

Please pray for us.

Our beloved puppy, Bootsie is not feeling well. He won't eat, drink and all he wants to do is sleep. If you know about puppies, I know what you are thinking, I'm thinking/worrying/crying about the same thing. Inside and out, I feel so sick, like I want to toss my cookies. Deep breath. We're taking him to the vet first thing in the morning.

Say a little prayer please. We love our little Bootsie so much...

CRAFTY CHICA VIDEO: Gift Card Book

#11 of 40 in the Chica Christmas series!

CLICK HERE TO WATCH THE VIDEO ON HOW TO MAKE ONE!

I love this project because it is all about presenting ordinary gift cards in an unpredictable way. You simply buy a few, and then make pages (that are actually small envelopes) so you can slip them in.

This is a great project for teens because you can put $5 from Starbucks, $5 from Borders, $5 from Target and so forth. They will feel like they are rich!

Another idea: You can put different things in each envelope, like a gift card in one, and then a letter in another, a picture in another and so forth. Maybe even theme them all!

And it doesn't just work for the holidays, you can also make one for Valentine's Day with love letters, concert tickets, or St. Patrick's Day with good luck charms, and so forth!

The video is part of the "Crafting With the Chica" series I did for LifetimeTV.com. Enjoy!

Chica Christmas #10: Bottlecap Tree

Turn your revelry into bottle-cap tree

Kathy Cano-Murillo
Special for the Republic
Dec. 8, 2007 12:00 AM

In our house the holiday season means lots of parties. Between family and friends, and imported beers and sodas, I'm always left with an abundance of bottle caps.

When you are a hopeless craftaholic like myself, you see each one as a mini picture frame. I can't even think of tossing them out. I recently arranged them all together and came out with this cool collage tree decoration.

I used vintage holiday images from ARTchixStudio.com, but you also can use personal photos, as long as you shrink them to fit in the bottle cap.

Bottle Cap Picture Tree

Supplies:

Holiday images (color copies of personal or other photos)
1-inch circle punch
Hot glue gun
75-80 silver bottle caps
Aleene's Paper Glaze (in bottle that has long skinny nozzle)
Micro fine gold glitter
1 foam tree, 10 inches tall
Micro fine green glitter
Red ball for the top of the tree
4-inch clay saucer to serve as pedestal for tree

Directions:

Cut out images with the circle punch, and glue each one into a bottle cap. Run a bead of the dimensional adhesive around the inside of the bottle cap (to frame each image with sparkle). Then, sprinkle gold glitter inside, and tap out the excess. Start at the bottom of the foam tree, and using the hot glue gun, affix the bottle caps in a row along the bottom. Repeat for the next row, working your way up.

Use the dimensional adhesive to squeeze glue in crevices between the bottle caps and pour on the green glitter. Tap away excess. Hot glue the red ball to the top of the tree, and the saucer (inverted) to the bottom.

Back in the saddle.

I've just returned from a whirlwind week in Fresno finalizing the packaging on all the Crafty Chica product line goodies. Not only did I pour over and double proof all the copy on the boxes, I also wrote up new directions each and every item. The design team has been retooling the color concepts and it just keeps looking better and better!

Every time I go to Duncan's magical headquarters, I see a whole new area I missed before. This time my friend Lindy took me into the chemist's lab where everything is white and pristine, just like you would imagine a chemist's lab to be. It's a secret room where two whizzical guys concoct and test out all kinds of formulas that eventually do or do not make it on our store shelves.

I also got to see another room that is crazy cool - it is like a HUGE mock store - every aisle represents a different retail store and their display set ups. One of the Duncan sales reps let me help her play around the with Crafty Chica set up - mixing and matching the products to see how they look on the walls and shelves. I had no idea all that went into it!

Aside from working on the products, I had other kinds of drama, all fun memorable stuff - like using a rental car for the first time in Fresno, and in that car - getting lost at night, in the rain, for an hour. And a flat tire. And accidentally flinging a breakfast fork off the table with such force it landed on my te and pierced it!

Yah. For real.

*Waves hand in front of face* Don't ask.

I'm not complaining, I got to hang with the Duncan crew for lunches and dinners and even the movies (yay, August Rush!!) The high point was the entire marketing staff had cake for my birthday Friday morning!! I made it home safe and sound Friday night with lots of hugs and nuzzles from Patrick, the kids, and our four puppies.

While I was at the Phoenix airport, I noticed a gallery display featuring the work of one of my former newspaper editor, Jenny Ignasewski! I'm so dang proud of her, she left a cushy cool gig at the paper to pursue a painting career and now her art is EVERYwhere and people flock to see it and buy it.

Oooooh, I'm so happy. When I came home yesterday, I was delighted to see that my Moo cards had finally arrived! I'm going to put them in all my outgoing orders and Christmas cards, and then I'm going to make up a special collector's batch for the CHA winter show. At the BlogHer conference, ArtUnraveled and CHA Summer Show, everyone and their crafty mother asked me if I had any to trade. This time I want to be prepared and come fully loaded! I'll test them out tomorrow when I have lunch with the Phoenix Craft Mafia chicas!

Well I am way behind on Internet stuff, I better get for now. I have a gazillion emails to answer, projects to post, and other things. Get ready for a steady stream of posts!

You know how they have "Christmas in July" events over the summer? Well I think it is only fitting to have "Fourth of July in December". So here is the uber-clever, super cute Craft Whore starring in "Craft and a Cocktail: 4th of July". If you likee, check out her other videos on You Tube or her MySpace page. All I can say is that I'll have what she is having! And stay tuned past the end credits for an extra giggle. Or two. Or three.

Chica Christmas, 6, 7, & 8: Nifty Secrets!

Sometimes to keep things fresh, you have to step away from the scene. That's what I did this weekend from my blog. But now I'm back with three nifty secrets of the trade to help you with your holiday crafting!

1. How to unclog your glue nozzles without tears.

I have a very bad habit of losing the caps to my glue. That leads to the glue drying inside the nozzle and makes for a headache next time I go to use it. So now I just whip out my Dremel. We're talking kamikaze crafting, people. It works, and it works fast.

2. How to dry wet ornaments without tears and cussing.

Next time you are at Target, or any place where they have a garden section, spill 3 bucks on a tomato cage, and use it to hang your wet ornaments. I use clothespins. Actually, this cage is great for hanging all kinds of stuff to dry!

3. How to make your own super shiny plastic-coated stickers.

Print out your favorite images on glossy photo paper. Cut them out. Use two-part resin and a chopstick to coat each image with the resin. Let them dry on a flat surface lined with wax paper. When they are dry, they will look just like those expensive ones at the craft store! I like how the coating is so thick and shiny!
