Chica Christmas #5: Awesome Advent Calendar

Awesome Advent Calendar.
This is a fun way to treat your kids to daily doses of love and smiles. I like to use these little flower pots because they hold so much, and you can choose to remove them and use them in your garden, or keep the calendar intact for next year (just add new paper to the tops of them).

Chica Christmas, 4 of 40: Glittered Message Art

Word messages are a happy way to spread positive cheer, don't you think? Especially when they are delivered in glitter. This project is filled with good intention because you choose a favorite uplifting phrase and use some sparkle-licious glitter letters to relay it. Use the finished piece on your front door, the tree, a wall or even a desk.

1 canvas
glittered letters
Hot glue
Craft paint
Brush
Dremel tool
2 eye hooks
Matching ribbon

Directions: Paint the canvas in your desired color and let dry. Choose your phrase and remove the letters from the box to make sure you have what you need. Arrange the word or phrase on the canvas. If you don't have enough room, use a larger canvas, or use two canvases and break up the phrase. Use hot glue to affix the letters. Drill two holes at the top and add eye hooks, thread the ribbon through, tie at one end and hang.

Tips: You can make your own glitter letters with chipboard letters, white craft glue and microfine glitter. Use an oval canvas for use as a table centerpiece.

Chica Christmas, 3 of 40: Tips!

There are two words to remember as you are creasing those holiday cards and knitting that red and green striped scarf: have fun! I'm a firm believer that whatever energy you put into your project will stay there. If you're singing along to Nat King Cole, great. If you're crying over frayed ribbon, not great. To help you stay calm, focused and cheery, here are some Crafty Chica guidelines for holiday crafting.

GRAB 'N GO GIFTS: Whip up some cards and gift bags, so when you need a spontaneous gift, you will have them ready to go. This is great for when you have a surprise gust, or you get invited to a party and need a quick gift. Make extra ornaments to give away.

MAKE A WORKSPACE: Choose an area in your house, set up a table, a task lamp and a comfortable chair. Plug in an outlet strip for multiple tools (dual glue guns, embossing gun, Dremel, etc.). Store your supplies clear plastic boxes or a plastic wall-shelving unit that you can take down after the holidays.

STOCK UP: Create a crafty toolbox: scissors (regular and mini), chopsticks (great for applying glue, crayons (for applying crystals) gems or poking out pointy seams), pencil, pen, tape, glue stick, pincushion, hot-glue sticks, ruler and anything else you use repeatedly.

GET INSPIRED: Visit web sites, book stores, craft stores for ideas. If in doubt, take a workshop at a local store. Load up your iPod with podcasts, and your DVR with holiday crafting shows!

PREPARE: Before you visit the craft store, make a shopping list so you don't overspend. Buy all your favorite paint colors early because they will likely sell out quick. Check the newspaper for coupons and sales.

PACKAGING: Always keep gift bags, gift tags, cello wrap and ribbons on hand for quick gift wrapping and mailing.

GET SOCIAL: Make crafting a way to bond with friends. Invite guests over or visit a craft shop and take part in its open labs. You pay a small fee and use the shop's supplies. Networking with others is a great way to share useful tips.

SIGN YOUR WORK: Everything you make is a work of art, so sign your name to it!

Welcome to my sweatshop. Then & now.

This was my day today. Waking up at the crack of dawn to mass produce almost 500 individual pieces of art for Target.com (Red Hot Shop). This picture is just one tray of the goods. Sheesh, we haven't had an order like this since the movie "Frida" came out on DVD and Buena Vista Home Entertainment had us hand paint 65 oversized chunky jewelry boxes with Salma Hayek's picture to give as cast and press gifts. Man, I wished I had made an extra one to keep! It was such a daunting job, I didn't want to make anymore than what was needed.

Actually I take that back. 65 jewelry boxes is nothing in our history.

In the early '90s when Patrick and I first started making our Mexicana-inspired arts and crafts, no sooner than a few months into the process we haphazardly picked up two national gift show sales reps. One in L.A. and one in NYC. Patrick and I were freshly married and out of nowhere we had to deal with hundreds of wholesale orders from boutiques all over the country. Now that I think of it, England, Mexico and Japan too!

Little did we know we had hit a nerve: hip, fashionable Latinocentric home decor and jewelry. Oh yah, it was all fun and exciting until the corporate orders hit, like Bloomingdales. They ordered our jumbo flower pots in chunks of 300 at a time. And then there was MTV that ordered magnets. And Hallmark. And Microsoft. And McDonalds. What budding entrepenuer could say no?

When it all went down, we had two toddlers and we lived in a teeny-tiny house (800 square feet) and every room was used as part of our production. There were flower pots lined up along the floorboards of every wall, on the window sills, the front and back porch, the driveway, on the kitchen table, and every countertop available. Even in the bathroom! Our living room had work tables instead of couches.

We had so many orders to fill and no money to hire help. Anytime friends or relatives came over, I'd see the look of shock on their faces when they saw our sweatshop operation. 80% of the time, they felt so sorry for us that they'd volunteer to help pack boxes, glaze flower pots, or write up shipping labels. Everyone wanted us to succeed. Down the street was a little liquor store and the owner would save us his best boxes. On another street was a print shop, and that owner saved us bubble wrap and packing peanuts so we wouldn't have to spend extra money. It just wasn't enough to save us.

A few years of this non-stop, I remember sitting on the bed and crying in Patrick's arms because we were so overwhelmed. We didn't have Internet, so shop owners would call at all hours of the night asking for their order or placing new ones. It took 3 months for us to make, pack and ship each order, and then the shop owner would recieve it, open the box, love it and then call us and order double! Aside from the flower pots we made chipwood boxes, crosses, earrings, bracelets, birdhouses, magnets and more. We didn't have the heart to say no because Patrick and I had vowed to live the dream of making a living off of art. We were so honored that so many merchandise buyers would want to carry our art in their stores! However, it all happened so fast and we weren't prepared how to make it a success. Even worse, everyone operated on "Net30" payments, or often times their checks would bounce. Talk about stress! Plus, we had no time to spend with eachother or the kiddos. We barely scraped enough together to move to a slightly bigger house, but it was still crafting madness!

One day we got an order from Santa Fe perfume for 10,000 handpainted pots. The company planned to package them with a bottle of perfume inside. I was excited, thinking it might be our big break to get caught up financially - but Patrick flat out said "Hell no!!" Not only to the order, but to all of it.

It was then we decided to give up the sweatshop life. Our sales reps parted with us because of all the headaches we gave them. I always wonder if they know what I'm doing now, and if they cringe when they see my name or picture. They were so good to us, but Patrick and I just weren't equipped to handle so much volume, so fast, no start up money, and two kids to feed.

Needless to say, we swore never to take on large quanitity orders again unless it was for something HUGE. So that's when I took the job at The Arizona Republic as a clerk - I needed to get out of the house and be around people again. Granted, we never stopped making our art, even to this day, as you can see!

At the time I felt like I had failed. I was so depressed. I wanted more than anything to prove I could make something of myself. I thought of how I had this special gem and lost it. Little did I know that accepting that defeat and moving on to a new adventure would be the ticket to my destiny. That part-time clerk job at the paper led to a college degree, a full-time entertainemnt reporting gig (I've always watched movies while crafting!), book deals, my craft column, time to refine my design style, - and "crafty chica" of course!

I learned that sometimes no matter how bad you want something, if all the signs show it is NOT meant to be - get out of the situation, and most importantly - keep the faith!

So here it is, more than 15 years later. Now we only sell online so we have control of the volume (sorta...). Our customer base continues to grow, and it amazes me how loyal our buyers are. At Spanish Market a couple of weeks ago, several people came by proudly wearing polymer clay jewelry I had made more than 10 years ago. Designs I had forgot about! And they still looked very cool!

While we were was working on this huge order today (who could say no to Target??), I thought about all of this. I don't regret any of it, because that crazy, kamikaze crafty boot camp is what helped make me what I am today. I'm so much happier now, at peace with all of it. And I know what the missing ingredient was back then. I was meant to share ideas and inspire others, and that's what I'm focused on now!! I can tell crafters what not to do, and what to do instead!

But I have to admit. I had fun today. It brought back so many memories. And it doesn't hurt to crank out a super ginormous order now and then.

It feels good to know I still have it in me :-)

Chica Christmas 2 of 40: Canvas Shadow Box

The holiday season is in full swing over here. Our whole house is tricked out in lights, trees, ornaments and all sorts of kitschy decorations. Speaking of kitschy - here is this week's video: Glittered Canvas Shadow Boxes!

I found a huge stack of small chunky canvases at the craft store in the clearance bin. They had pictures printed on them that were kinda cheesy - but alas, I turned them over and grinned in delight. There was a perfect spot to insert a small trinket! If you don't have such luck at your nearest clearance bin, you can use regular canvases, they are only $2-3 bucks each.

If you can't see the video, click here to see it at LifetimeTV.com.

Chica Christmas 1 of 40: Peppermint Snowflake Bark

Crafting doesn’t always have to involve glue, scissors and paint. Visit the local craft store and you’ll find a whole section dedicated to do-it-yourself food projects such as cake decorating, and my favorite - candy melts!

Candy melts come in all kinds of colors, and you can add whatever other embellishments you wish, including edible glitter, sprinkles, favor bags or colorings. I went with a silicone snowflake molds and crushed candy canes. These wintry treats are perfect for parties, gifts or just to keep the holiday spirit bubbling in your house.

Peppermint Snowflake Bark

Supplies:

1 silicone snowflake mold
1 bag of white candy melts
6 candy canes
Microwave safe bowl
Mixing spoon
2 resealable sandwich bags

Directions: Open the candy canes and put them in a resealable candy bag, and then put that bag inside another. Seal it closed. Crunch candy canes down to small pieces with a mallet or coffee cup.
Pour the bag of candy melts in the bowl and microwave in 30 second intervals, stirring between each one. When melts are soft and creamy (think cake batter), pour it into the molds, evenly distributing through out all of them. Lightly lift and drop the mold tray on the counter so the candy gets into all the grooves. Sprinkle a generous amount of candy cane dust on each one. Let cool for an hour, and then carefully peel them out of the molds.
Variations: For thick snowflakes, add another layer of melted candy on top of the candy cane dust. For thinner, wafer-like snowflakes, use half the bag of melts.

We adopted a baby!

He is of the furry variety, but a baby all the same. He is three months old! He has tan legs, which makes him look like he is wearing boots. So named him Bootsy ("Boo" for short). That means we now have THREE Chihuahuas and one maltihuahua (maltese/Chihuahua). They are so small that they actually are like two medium dogs. Right? Yes, I know I am in denial. I'm a freak for having four yappy dogs, but just let me enjoy this moment in time, OK?

Here's one more puppy picture!

Thanksgiving was nice, hope yours was too! On Tuesday, Patrick and I made a turkey dinner just for the four of us (that means the kids). We have two houses to visit on turkey day, and therefore we just kinda nibble at each one, so when we get home we are always craving cold turkey sandwiches and stuffing. So now, at least we have our own little gobble gobble to nibble nibble on this week!

Before I forget, I want to share a link to a friend of mine's blog. Have you ever heard of Heidi Swapp? She is like the guru goddess of scrapbooking, and the other night I was catching up on her blog only to learn that she and her whole family moved the CHINA! Her husband has a budding business and they all moved and began a new life journey there. I've always been fascinated by China and the culture and hope to visit there someday, especially after watching Top Model, Anthony Bourdain, and Survivor. I feel like China is everywhere I look!. Heidi's blog is the next best thing, her pictures are amazing and so are her journal entries!

Oh! Next week is the launch of my new "Crafting With the Chica" videos. They haven't even aired half of my other ones, and now they are rolling out new ones. These are super fun, you'll see very soon!

And I am keeping true to my "40 Days of a Chica Christmas" idea. Starting tomorrow - *oh, it is already tomorrow* - anyway, I'll post a different inspiration every day!

Well, I'm off to update my store for the holidays!

Merry Christmas! Woo, it sounds so good to say that. Bring on the tinsel and glitter!

CRAFTY CHICA VIDEO: Terrific Travel Candles

Wow, these weeks are just flying by! There is already a new Crafty Chica video posted on LifetimeTV.com!

Here is the insider scoop on this one - I'm uber-hammy in it because the day before was the horrible stretch without the air conditioner, my bad hair, lack of sleeep, cry, cry cry. SO - I had woke up early for the second day, relaxed, vibed up, and told myself no matter what, I was going to let myself have fun.

So I had a little too much fun, because I go waaaayyyy over the campy top with this one. At point I even danced and shimmied, thank GOD they edited that out! What the _____ was I thinking???

Overall, it is still super fun and a really easy project to whip out...Hope you like it!!

Weekend wrap; Books; Felt Club

Well, I made it through another kamikaze week of craft-realted drama. By day I researched and sketched a gazillion potential holiday product ideas. Two nights this week, I filmed 10 more episodes of Crafting with the Chica for Lifetime. Wed & Thurs were at least 18 hour days. My daughter is so sweet, she rubbed my feet last night to help me level out so I could fall asleep. It worked.

This weekend is all about polishing up the final touches on my sewing book and then making my orders for Target. I just realized that I volunteered my time to a Latina mentoring program tomorrow morning, Patrick has a big family reunion party, and I promised my sister I'd go see Aisha Tyler with her.

As crazy as it all sounds, at least this is the tail end of a jam-packed fall season. We've had something going on every weekend since September, and there has been no time to whine or whimper. The fact that people are interested in our art is a blessing! But thank goodness things will simmer down next month so we can enjoy the holiday season.

Speaking of which...I have this crazy idea of doing a "40 Days of Christmas Chica Crafts" here on my blog. Every day starting on November 24th, I'll post a crafty idea for you. Some of them will be reruns, but for the most part, they'll be funky fresh. And of course, they will include my craft columns, and the 10 new webisodes that we just filmed, which are soooooo cool, I can hardly wait for you to see them!

This round of shooting went much easier than the last batch from August. I had everything prepped, the crew came and set designed our house (yes, they let us keep all the decorations- yay!!), and I had one full day to buy 10 outfits instead of two hours like last time.

I knew I needed to get my hair done, but didn't have time to go across town to the fancy salon I usually visit. So I made a last minute call, and went to the Mexican salon by my house. Oh. My. God. Sylvia, the owner, did a *fabulous* job for 1/3 of the price I usually pay (shampoo, cut, color, blow dry, manicure, brows, bottle of product= $112!!). I even got to practice my Spanish a teeny bit. Who knew Phoenix had an alternative rock Latin radio station? That's what was playing in the background. Sylvia is my hero!

Well, I have to go hit the art room to finish up this sewing book. In the meantime, here are some new craft books that came ot me in the mail recently. I think they could make great gifts!

CRAFTY CHICA VIDEO: Witty Word Soaps

Alrighty! Here is the new "Crafting with the Chica" LifetimeTV.com video. But please be gentle on me for this one - it was the first one we shot, I was SO nervous, I'm a little stiff in it. Plus we had to turn off the air conditioning in my house because it was so loud and the tech could hear it in the background.

It was 113 degrees outside that day, so imagine what it was like inside the house!

The next day the production crew rented a 5 ton air conditioning unit to chill the house in between shoots. so it is just the first day that I have a totally frizzed coif. There are two other eps that followed where you can see my hair get progressively worse.

At least the project rocks!! Hope you like it!

PROJECT: Fall Leaf Frame

Fall leaves are hard to come by in my neck of the city. So unless you are planning a trip up north soon, you'll have to check out the floral aisle at the craft store.

Whether they are the real thing or not, fall leaves are a lovely sign that fall is finally here. So why not incorporate them into your latest craft project?

This embellished frame is a wonderful way to embrace November and all it has to offer.

Fall Leaf Frame

Supplies:
1 wood picture frame
Gold paint, brush
Assorted silk fall leaves
Scissors
Hot glue
Gold micro stars
White craft glue
Green spray glitter.

Directions: Paint the frame gold and let dry. Snip the stems from the leaves and sort the large leaves from the small. Hot glue the large ones around the front of the frame in a random but balanced fashion. Hot glue the smaller leaves to cover bare spots. Apply a tiny drop of glue on one of the leaves and place a micro star on top of it. Continue until the micro stars are evenly distributed around the leaves. Let dry. Take it outside and lightly spray on a mist of glitter. Let dry.

Variations: If you have real fall leaves, place them inside a floating frame to preserve them. Use silk leaves to adorn napkin rings, lapel pins and more.

All is well!

I'm alive! My voice is back and I'm down to a few minor sniffles. THANK YOU to everyone who sent me well wishes, they helped!

Spanish Market rocked. We did indeed have plenty of merchandise. Eek, I still don't have time to blog a lot right now though. I need to conserve my energy. We have to unpack the truck with the leftover goods and then clean out the art room. It looks like Martha Stewart had a meltdown in there - ribbons strwen all over the floor, glitter spilled on tables, fabric scraps piled on top of the TV set, etc. I crave order right now. I still have sewing projects to finish for my book, a huge Target order, plus I have to update my website really bad, and then hello? I still have my day job! It all culminates at the end of the week the filming of TEN more epsiodes of "Crafting with the Chica" - special holiday projects! Somewhere this week I need to find time to get my hair cut and shop for 10 new slenderizing outfits for the shoot. How will I get it all done?

I'm not complaining, I love and savor every second. Besides, after this week, things should calm down quite a bit. I'm so ready to relax for the month of December!

I'll try to pop in here to share pictures from this weekend and keep you updated on the time clock that is my life right now!

Factory closed.

OK, I give. Turned the lights off in the art room last night. I think I have strep. I'm going to give in to this thing. I'm going to the doctor, and then I'll have a daylong healing session with my bed, pillow and TV remote until further notice. Hopefully I'll be back in the game tomorrow. I have a list of things I wanted to post here like the new Lifetime craft video and my recent column, but I need to mend, so I'll catch ya on the rebound. Have a super day anyway! Gosh I hate being sick :-(

Not quite a marathon.

Vitamins.

I should have remembered vitamins.

Perhaps if I had thrown in a few One-A-Days with my fancy-schmancy trail mix I wouldn't be sitting here breathing through my mouth and sneezing. Yup, one day into my craft marathon and I caught a cold. I'm still pushing through, but things are going way slower. I've been taking Airbourne all day and I think this will be a cold that does not fully develop. At least that is what happened a couple of weeks ago, so I'm hoping for the same.

You'll never believe what Patrick did to me tonight! Grrrr...

One of his pet peeves is when I run errands in my paint clothes. This is like the artist equivalent of a bathrobe and fuzzy slippers. Ratty clothing items that are covered in hard, crusty, dried paint and holes where dried varnish has cracked off. And black pants to match. I swear to God that I only wear them out when

1. I know I'm NOT getting off the car and
2. When I know the trip will be super short.

Tonight Patrick played for our friend's poll results party (congrats Mike!!) and wanted me to go and hang out with him - take the night off listen to some grooves, chat with friends. But no, I dropped him off in true tuck-n-roll style, ran an errand (we only have one car!) and went home to finish up a batch of 20 painted crosses.

When it was time to pick him up, I thought: "I'll just go in my paint clothes so he won't make me get down from the car and say hi to everyone." I mean, come on now, I don't feel good!

So I get there and Patrick runs up and hops in the car. "Darn, you wore your paint clothes! I wanted you to say hi to everyone, they want to see you!"

I giggled in a "Ha-ha, my plan worked!" kind of way. Patrick kissed me and went to go pack the band equipment in the back of our 4Runner. I smiled in satisfaction and pulled out my iPhone to check my MySpace messages to pass the time. No sooner than one minute, I hear Patrick tell someone "Yeah, she's here! Crafty Chica is in the car! Come say hi to her!"

My eyebrows popped up in ultimate horror. Before I could angrily "sshhh' him, our handsome friend Sammy the fireman pops his head in the window to kiss me on the cheek. "Hi Kathy! Wow, did you make your shirt?"

For the next 30 minutes while Patrick loaded the car, he sent everyone over to say hi to me. So there I am with my frizzy Marge Simpson ponytail on top of my head, in my grungy paint clothes hugging a line of nicely dressed people through the driver's window.

I didn't have a chance to be furious because I was genuinely happy to see all my old friends, but man, I learned my lesson! Next time I'm taking five extra minutes to get dressed because cold or no cold, quick trip or not, you just never know who you are going to bump into!

As far as Patrick, hmmmm. Maybe next time I'll just call him a cab! (JK!)

Recipe for marathon crafting

If you are a serious crafter, you know what it is like to prep for a big show. We have Spanish Market this weekend, and like every year, we only have one week to prep.

Five days.
120 hours.
Ten shifts: 5 mornings and 5 nights.

Spanish Market is our biggest event of the year. As much merchandise as we can make, we sell it. It takes two car loads to set up our booth and we come home with one milk crate of leftovers. Not only do we have to make gobs of stock, I have to price everything, make signs, figure out displays and make cards. Here is an easy method for cards - Just print info on address labels and put them on cut up pieces of scrapbook paper.

Let the games begin! This is how serious I am about staying focused. I made three new playlists. One is reggae for "groove" crafting when I'm making my art purses and need to feel the flow. The second is fun stuff like Sergeant Garcia, Rilo Kiley, The Pinkertones, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings to keep me up late and perky at night. I also loaded up some Spanish podcasts so I can practice those tricky verbs, and some crafty podcasts too.

Next, I stacked up a healthy selection of TV shows on my DVR. I bought a huge case of bottled water, and made trail mix and sorted it into little baggies for random hunger pains. All so I can stay in the studio and work.

Yesterday morning, Patrick and I went to the groceries and bought enough food so we won't have to leave the house. I don't plan on answering emails or phone calls this week. This is red alert time! If you happen to drive by my house, you might want to check on us to make sure we are still alive!

So far we are doing good. Last night I polished off 99 glass ornaments and am half way through 150 magnets. That's just the little stuff!

1 box Granola cereal
1/2 bag of dark M&Ms
1 bag of tropical dried fruit
1 small bag of sliced almonds

Mira! Adorn!

The white knuckle excitement of last week continues! I just picked up copies of two magazines that came out last week that feature mi arte.

First up is Adorn Magazine.

I *heart* this glossy because it stays true to "general crafters" (people who dabble in a variety of craft genres) like me - a little bit of sewing, a little bit painting, a little bit of jewelry making... Last year I was told that general craft style books and magazines were on the decline and I sniffled. How could that be? Everyone I know cross-crafts like crazy. We merge the genres just for the sake of flavor, and the yearning to be daring and different. So, yes. It's nice to have a variety of projects within one magazine like Adorn. Kudos to Craft as well, they follow the same concept. And cheers to any others too!

When Adorn editor Christina Batch called me last summer to pitch this idea, she was like "It's the Vegas issue and I immediately thought of you, Kathy!" Needless to say, I was flattered. And dang, looking at the issue, I'm also flattered to be among all the other talented designers.

My assigned mission? Deck out a vintage train case, Vegas stylee. The topis covered in vintage travel stickers, crystals, trim and the bottom is covered in glitter. Did you know you can use aerosol hairspray (I use Aquanet) to set your glitter without dulling the gleam? But hey, don't over "do" it, a little works just fine. Sorry, could not resist the pun!

Anyhoo, I kissed the box before I sent out this project because I enjoyed making it so much. And seeing how it is photographed with that gorgeous model makes me love it all the more. For complete directions, buy a copy of the Winter 2007 issue, or better yet - become an Adorn subscriber!

(This is a picture from the magazine's table of contents.)

Oh! In the same issue, I recieved a bonus plug from my dear friend Susan Beal, she wrote about my upcoming crafty cruise. Thank you, Ms. Susan Stars!

Think that's swell? Hold on to your tijeras, because more isa comin'. The other publication I made it into last week is none other than Mira Magazine. It's the "Who is Gay and Who is Not" issue!

Um, clarification: My craft project is a different story altogether. Recipe page.

What? Never heard of Mira? Hello? It's only the most widely read Spanish-language celebrity tabloid on the market! Kinda like OK or Star. Special thanks to Maria Castello from Mira and Alyson Udell from Duncan for helping it all come together so nice!

And if you want to know quien es gay y quien es no - sorry, you'll have to buy a copy of the magazine to see for yourself. It's juicy-juicy scoop!

Triple thanks!

Mi amor.

Wow, we made it through October! What a month. So much went down and we are still standing. Here are just a few of the things we juggled last month: The Target orders (yes, we are still making more bracelets and necklaces! I don't want to share the link anymore!), Day of the Dead orders, sales presentation meetings, my craft column, local appearances, my sewing book, Spanish classes, birthday parties, vending at festivals, coordinating the chica lit blog tour, writing a ghost story, traveling, my full-time DAY JOB!

Dang, peeps, this mommy is dizzy!

Would you think I'm weird if I said I'm savoring all of it? I'm a project-oriented person, and everyday I write a new to-do list. I can't go to sleep at night until at least 3/4's of the items are crossed off. I type it up the night before, and use fun fonts and graphics, so when I look at it, I'll be in good spirits and ready to rock.

Patrick reminded me that I've been clocking in 16 hours at least 3-4 days each week. Oh yah, he should talk. He played the first of four gigs starting last night and then on through the weekend. He has been pulling 10 hours days between making art and practicing his music. We are career junkies!

We seriously could use a mini-staff to answer phones and emails, deliver orders, basecoat flower pots, get me mochas! But alas, we do not have a mini-staff, so there is three weeks worth of laundry piled up, we have more varnish than milk in the house at the moment - but at least the kids are off to school on time and are fed and loved.

Thursday night Patrick MADE me go to bed right after Ugly Betty (that night's episode ROCKED, no?). It felt so deliciously wonderful to konk out before the nightly news and wake up bright and cheery at 6. I needed that break. Now that it is Saturday, I can look back and say that this has been the most surreal week EVER.

Sunday I wrote my contribution to the Chica Lit Ghost Story Blog Tour and it felt so good to step away from the art table and do something like write about a haunted dresser. I am so proud to have been in that project with the chica lit authors! The ghost story blog tour went over so well that we are going to do something for the holidays. Tuesday this blog had the second highest amount of hits in Crafty Chica history - 116,000! The biggest was back in January after the NPR story ran, that day I had 280,000 hits! If you missed any of the ghost stories, just scroll down.

Speaking of writing - I want to send a high five to all of your who are particpating in National Novel Writing Month! I joined in 2004 and wrote the first draft to my book, Love Shine, that sold in a two book deal this summer. Marcela even wrote about it in her newsletter! If you are part of NaNoWriMo this year, you should not even be reading this - you should be writing! Go on, scoot! go increase your word count right now!

More book stuff: This week I also had a meeting with my agent and book editors about my upcoming sewing book. I learned I'm not as far along as I could be, but I was assured that that is not a bad thing. Quality comes first. Do you know all that goes into putting a craft book together? This is just the skin and bones of it.

1. You get an idea and put together a 30 page proposal, complete with a detailed outline, photos and a sample intro and chapter.
2. You pitch it to ditors and hope one bites.
3. If so, you rework the projects so you and your editor are clinking champagne glasses in excited agreement.
4. You buy all the supplies, make all the projects.
5. You hire a pro-photographer to shoot all the projects in the most glamorous light ever.
6. You write step-by-step instructions, write the entire manuscript, hire a copy editor to check your grammar and typos, and hire an illustrator.

All the while, you send snapshots of everything to your editor so the two of you will still want to clink champagne glasses in excited agreement. I hope that gives you new respect when you go to a book store and pick up a craft title. Us crafty authors put a lot of love into our work!

BTW: My friend Susan Beal has a new beading book coming out that I contributed a project to - it is called "Bead Simple". I made the project this time last year, and I scoured all of Manhattan to find the perfect charms and beads. you'll have to wait until the book comes out to see it! Oh!!! I'm also a guest designer in an upcoming Chronicle title too, but that's waaay down the road, but still very cool, and you know I'll keep you posted!

Anyhoo, let me steer back from that detour. My sewing book. Potter Craft has a team of crafty superheroes who are guiding me through the process with intense TLC. It's more work than I've ever done for any book before, kinda like late night crafty boot camp, but it's good for me, I'm learning a lot because the bar has been raised. 1/3 of the projects are clothing items, and I've never designed fashion type items before. I was freaked and 100% intimidated, but at a recent photo shoot, tears welled up in my eyes seeing the model twirl around in a dress I designed - and then begged me to let her keep it. I just remember thinking, "I can't believe I made that!" I'm building creative and critical thinking muscles I didn't know I had. The projects are amazing, super clever stuff that I guarantee you have not seen before. All the while, my sweet and powerful Janome 11000 is serving me well (yes, I'm keeping my fingers out of the way of the needle!). Sewing is fun, people! Give it a try!!!

For Duncan, I've been working on prototypes of Crafty Chica kits for next year. This is a really wild, exciting process because you make multiple versions and mock them up like they will look on store shelves. From scratch! Extreme visualization! Again, I'm telling you - these are supa cool things you have not seen in a craft store before!

The down side of all this is that Patrick and I have not been able to get our art orders out in our usual timely fashion. I had to close the store last week just so we could catch up. I felt bad turning customers away. Two frantic people offered to pay double just so we could Fed Ex their order, but it isn't about money, it is about time. Some people didn't get their merchandise by this week, but were very sweet and understanding about it, and I appreciate that so much. I put free magnets in everyone's boxes to make up for the delay!

Last week we had our Desert Botanical Garden muertos event and even at 95 degrees, we loved every second. The place was crawling with happy people in all kinds of skeleton attire. Here is our booth. Scarce, but at least we had a few things for sale! And then my friends Nancy and Carmen, aren't they cute? Carmen kept trying to get me to dance with her!

It's also been a week of growing pains. Patrick and I have operated as a tag team for so long and are always amazed at what we have accomplished. Granted, now everything is at a waaay higher level. We realized today everything as we know it is changing. There are a lot more people involved with what we are doing, so much at stake. We are getting directions from all different angles. On our art, his music, my books. We have to come through with shining colors, no matter what! Patrick likened it to being pregnant for the first time. Everyone and their uncle tells you what you should do and how to do it, all with good intention. There is the fear of the unknown. The internal reminders to keep the faith. Keep your integrity. Swollen feet (serisouly!). At the end, there is a shiny happy addition to your life that you cannot live without, and you laugh at how much time you spent worrying for no reason.

Well, the baby has not come out yet. I cracked this week and cried a couple times. Not sniffles, I'm talking hardcore Boo-hoo!-Not-Even-Godiva-Will-Help! cries.

Everything is happening at the same time: the books, the filming of the webisodes, the product line. I want it all to be perfect. I'm working with experts and soaking up all the knowledge I can. It's a blessing to have that. The challenge for me is not to throw away everything I've learned on my own. My first instinct is to say "I surrender everything to you, you know best!!" It's good to do that the same way it is good for American Idol wannabees to take Simon's advice and work with it. He knows his stuff. But sometimes though, a little voice inside me says "Kathy, value your own expertise, that's what got you this far!"

My goal with EVERYTHING is to always break new ground, go the non-traditonal route. If I had followed the traditional route, I would not be typing this right now, I would be working for a 9-5 traffic court job for the City of Phoenix!

There are so many workshops and lectures on how to reach your goals and dreams. There should be one on how to handle things when it all happens. How to be polished and professional without losing who you are or your convictions. Paging Nancy Marmolejo!

All that stressing, and then I get an email like this that reminds me of the bottom line, and why I do what I do - to inspire people far and wide by any means neccessary!

"I've been a huge fan of yours forever (which is a long time in internet lightyears :) ) and just wanted to drop you a note about how much I'm enjoying your podcasts! I know that with your busy schedule you haven't been able to do any more for a while so I've downloaded all the past ones and am slowly savoring them, trying to make them last like the last few pieces left in a box of precious chocolates. :) I just listened to your story about the office cake and was alternately laughing and then saying "pobrecita". Were you to ask me to relate a similar story I'd be stumped - I think that I must have had selective amnesia and blocked it out but it's funny how I can still totally feel my face burning and a sinking cringing feeling in my stomach. Ah, good times, good times. :) Anyway, it's always a delight to switch on the TV and catch you demoing a craft or to open a magazine and read about your most recent endeavors. I heard you speak last year at the CHA expo in Anaheim and thoroughly enjoyed your talk about Hispanic trends in crafting. You are so inspiring and a real champion for creativity. You go girl! :) I wish you much continued success and lots of crafty goodness this holiday season!!!"

*Wipes tears*

For that, I say triple thanks!! Not just for that email, but for all the others like it. Even though I may not have time to answer each and every one, my daughter reads them to me while I'm working in the art room and we both shakes our heads in amazement. Thank you for coming here, for reading this, for being so nice, for liking crafts! And a big thanks to all the fabulous companies that have put their faith in me and the Crafty Chica concept, I will not let you down!

Well, I'm off to make art and then find time to have fun. Next weekend is our biggest event of the year, Spanish Market.

Until then, make this new Mary J. Blige track your theme song!! Everything is gonna be just fine!!! Man, no one throws it down like Mary J!!

Dia de los Muertos Shrines

It's officially Dia de los Muertos 2007!

The first night of the two-day event begins at midnight, and it's the spirits of the babies and children who come to visit their former homes or gravesites. By this time tomorrow, they will have returned to the afterworld, and the adults will arrive.

Dia de los Muertos isn't just about cute skeletons, gallery-worthy altars or fun crafts. It's about respecting our ancestors and loved ones who have crossed over. It's welcoming their spirits back with open hearts and arms. That's why we create ofrendas at home or at gravesites with all the things that will make their senses tingle. Things that will make them feel alive on Earth again. If your Aunt Mary used to love bottled Coca Cola, imagine how big she will smile when she gets to taste it again! Make Dia de los Muertos be a personal experience for you, especially if you have recently lost someone you care deeply for.

Don't cry for them today or tomorrow. Do not let yourself feel regret or sorrow. They are here, tell them what you need to tell them, because they are listening. They hear you. Close your eyes and feel them beside you, enjoying the treats you set out for them. They are happy because you care enough to remember the joyful times, the smiles, the love and warmth they brought to your life, and you to theirs. That's what they want you to think of! This is a time to party with them again!

Remember Dia de los Muertos is about celebrating life - not mourning death. We celebrate the cycle of life. Not only the deceased, but our own lives - right now. Let these days remind you to count your blessings. To try new things. Take chances. Meet new people. Let yourself experience goosebumps galore! That is truly living. Give your children, grandchildren and great grandchildren something to remember you for!

Whew. That was intense, I get like that around this time of the year. But as with so many things these days, it's easy to forget the true meaning. There are calaca clothes, shoes, jogging suits, barrettes, candy, posters, you name it! That's all cool, because it hopefully will motivate people to learn more about what Dia de los Muertos is all about. But just in case, I wanted to send out my little reminder :-)

OK, let me share some altars and shrines I've made so you can get ideas to make your own!

This mint tin shrine I made for Patrick's Grandpa Greg. He was such a cute man, so dapper and downright lovable. He was in his mid-80s and he would still flirt with the young girls and faithfully watch Sabado Gigante every weekend. He always had Jolly Ranchers in his pockets and passed them out to everyone from his grandkids to the pharmicist at the drug store. There are other little personal objects in this shrine that he would enjoy.

When it comes to making your ofrenda, it can be as simple as a photo and a marigold flower, or an ornate display. Even if you haven't lost anyone, make a shrine for victims of violence or disasters, your favorite movie star, pet or someone who really inspired you.
