PROJECT: Cupcake Candles!

Cupcakes without calories

Kathy Cano-Murillo
Special for The Arizona Republic
Sept. 29, 2007 12:00 AM

I'd like to introduce you to my new best friend: the silicone mold.

I've been collecting these everywhere. I found them in the dollar bins at Target, Torrid clothing shop and, of course, the craft store in the baking aisle. NOTE: Wouldn't it be so cute to use these pumpkin molds for Halloween?

I've used these life-changing flexible molds for ice cubes, resin key chains, edible baked treats, melt and pour soaps, and my favorite - candles.

I'm watching my waistline so I decided to burn a cupcake instead of eating one. Candle supplies can be found at the craft store.

Cupcake Candles

Supplies:

1 Dutch oven
1 package of candle wax (white)
Oven mitts
1 metal candle-pouring pitcher
Chopstick
1 candle-wax thermometer
Candle colors
Candle scents
1 silicone mold for cupcakes
1 package of tall candle wicks
1 rubber spatula
1 hole puncher

Directions: Fill the Dutch oven half way with water and heat until boiling.

Wearing the oven mitts, place cut up chunks of wax (2 cups' worth) into the pouring pitcher and set inside the boiling water. Reduce heat to medium.

Stir with chopstick until wax is liquefied. Insert thermometer, and when the temperature reaches 180 degrees, you are ready to add desired drops of color and scent, according to package directions.

Stir to mix. Lift pitcher out of water and pour a thin layer of wax in the mold, insert wick. Finish filling the mold. Let cool completely. Remove from mold.

Repeat candle melting process again, but this time, put in a different color for the frosting. Remove from heat once liquefied, let cool until you stir the wax so it looks like frosting. Again, wearing the oven mitts, dip the spatula in the wax and "frost" the cupcake. Let cool.

For sprinkles: Heat a bit of wax and add a different color and pour thin layers into the mold. Let cool, pop out, and use hole puncher to create decorations.

Warning: Always use extreme caution when working with candle wax. Do not use around small children. Burn candle in a safe place, and never leave unattended.

Phoenix Fridas win award!

Woo-hoo!!! The craft group I founded a couple of years ago here in AZ - The Phoenix Fridas - won "Best Latina Art Collective" in today New times Best of Phoenix 2007"

"BEST LATINA ART COLLECTIVE (2007)
Phoenix Fridas
www.myspace.com/phoenixfridas
Frida Kahlo remains an important Latina cultural and feminist icon for many artists (even after that awful movie they made about her a few years ago), so it makes sense that she's the namesake for this local women's artist collective. The Phoenix Fridas, as you might guess, focus their work around Mexican folk-art traditions, though they go about it in very different ways. The group works with diverse mediums — some women paint, others are jewelers or clothing designers, another works mostly on crafts like scrapbooks and knick-knacks — but they all love Frida and they identify themselves as feminists... whatever that word means these days.

These chicks love Frida to the point that they've even given each other nicknames: Smoker Frida, Tia Frida, Dead Frida, Crafty Frida, Beader Frida, Paper Frida, Frida Bill and, well, you get the point. Like a Latin-flavored sewing circle, the women share ideas, support each other and promote their art. They show occasionally at Paper Heart and their works can also be purchased through their MySpace page. In spite of the slightly misleading title, you don't have to be a Latina to join. You just have to love art and, of course, all things Frida.
"

Leave us a comment here!

Also, i want to give props to Frida member, Leticia, for picking up this award, as well as the newly formed Phoenix Craft Mafia! Way to go crafty people!!

PROJECT: Clay Stamped Boxes

This is a project from "Crafty Chica Collection" book - what you do is paint small paper mache boxes and then line them with air dry clay. You then use rubber stamps and press on the clay. Let them harden and then use your finger to rub paint over the embossed areas. I used pretty metallics. For some areas, you'll have to remove the clay after it hardens and then glue it down. I then covered them with a high gloss varnish. It's all about the shine, baby!

"This is my life as a crafty girl!"

(Me, if I were skinny and had blonde hair)

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

I saw Jaslene's "My Life As A Cover Girl" commercials tonight and was inspired. I'm so happy that America's Next Top Model is on again. And at 10 is The Fashionista Diaries, another guilty pleasure. Next month Project Runway is back on the airwaves, which means Wednesdays will be my favorite day of the week again. I've been slaving away in the art room and my DVR is stacked with: A Haunting, Heroes, Ugly Betty, Oprah, Tyra, Rock of Love (Ack, I can't believe I just admitted that!), and of course all the crafty shows throughout the day. There are more, but I can't think of them all right now.

Just yesterday I finished up a big jewelry order for Target's Red Tot Shop. This time next week, there will be a limited supply of exclusive Crafty Chica jewelry up for grabs. The coolest thing? I didn't only make jewelry for the store, but also for some Target VIPs, which I'm totally stoked about!!

Right down the street from my house is a Target, it may as well be the sixth member of the family, I love it so much. HOWEVER, my beloved store closed in January because it had to be leveled and recreated into a brand spankin' new design. It's done being remodeled! All the lights are on, the merch is in there, the carts are out front, but there is a fence around the opening doors with two guards on duty. The doors will be unlocked October 14th. *Jumps up and down* My sister and I giggle that we want to tailgate at midnight and be the first customers.

Ha! Silly joke between us.

Um. OK, we are serious. We really want to do that. Life is hard without a Target down the street!

I haven't had much time to blog because my daytime hours have been dedicated to coming up with Halloween craft products for 2008. It sounds easy, but it is really hard. I had a list of killer concepts and then, alas, when I went to Target (one that is still open) last Friday night, they had my ideas executed and for sale!

I feel so honored because of that "great minds think alike" line. Not that I think my mind is all that great, but at least I know I'm on the right track, right? I just have to think of things sooner! The other ideas I had, I already Googled them back and forth, and traveled across the globe (well, Phoenix and its surrounding metropolitan areas...) and haven't seen anything like them. Today I sent over my fleshed out list, and my boss was very happy! That makes me happy! Next, Patrick and I have to nail down the sketches.

By night I'm working away on my sewing book. Before I started constructing the projects, I had to submit sketches for each one to my book editor and wait for them to get approved. I've never done that before, I've always kinda designed as I went along. For most of the projects, the sketches REALLY came in handy. They make me feel so professional. It is kinda like writing a novel and following an outline of the plot as you type. However, there is one project that I got a totally fabulous new idea for that is very different from the sketch I submitted.

When I'm not sewing, I'm immersed in my Spanish lessons. Mis gustas mis clases! Aprendo dos noches esta semana. Yo quiero mas. As you can see, I'm a little bumpy right now, but I'm trying super hard, and Patrick is a big help. So many verbs! so little time!

Even though I'm rough with la lingua, I still managed to share a few stories with my class tonight - and they understood!! That's a good sign, right? Please pardon my lack of knowledge with typing this out, feel free to write it the correct way in the comments, I'm just going to wing it!

1. La otra dia en la manana, yo dice a mi esposo: "Aye! Que hermosa dia, no? (What a beautiful day!)" Mi esposo dice: "Que, mi amor? A quesadilla???"

Ha ha, Patricio!

2. Un tiempo, mi suegra (mom-in-law) dice: "Queides comida, Kathy?(Do you want food?)" Yo dice: "Oh, no gracias! No yo tengo hombre! (Oh, no thanks! I don't have a man!)" I meant to say "hambre", as in "hunger".

Another time I was asked to give an active sentence about a man and his hand. I told my teacher (and the entire class) in Spanish: "The man has his hand in his pants."

OK - those examples were from when I FIRST started my classes last April. I'm much better now. I still make errors, but the only way to become fluent is to keep trying. I just ignore Patrick when his face turns bright red at my questions, or when he cracks up and kisses my forehead before correcting me.

I can't express enough how much I love learning Spanish. I've wanted to learn my whole life, but was so insecure. I h ad every excuse in el libro as to why I couldn't and wouldn't do it. Now I'm enrolled at Interlingua, and love every second. I highly recommend it for anyone in the Phoenix area. And I wouldn't be doing if it were not for Duncan. As part of my new job, the goal is for me to be fully bi-lingual and I want to prove to them (and me!) that I can tackle this with flying colores and make them proud.

I'm a little stressed because in addition to all of this, I got another big, exciting national project to work on (Thank you, Jackie!!!), plus two big wholesale orders of Day of the Dead merchandise for local boutiques. At least Patrick can tackle the latter, thank goodness!

Well, this is my life as a crafty girl, as Jaslene would sorta say! Enough about me. I'm going to post a project for you before I go to bed.

Adios amigas!

PROJECT: Sew-n-Sew Necklace

A necklace to inspire sew-and-sew

Kathy Cano-Murillo
Special for The Arizona Republic
Sept. 22, 2007 12:00 AM

September is National Sewing Month, which means now is a good time to dust off your machine and give it a whirl.

Before you dismiss the idea, assuming you have to make a dress from scratch, think again. There are all kinds of easy projects that take minutes to complete.

Example: I love to stitch two decorative place mats together, and then add Fiberfill for an instant toss pillow. I'm also addicted to microsize designs.

Recently, while sorting through my fabric scraps, I became inspired to make little pillow jewelry pieces. These make adorable earrings and pendants, or you can sew them all together for a cool wrist cuff. I settled for this fabric necklace. You also can make these as appliques to sew onto clothing, quilt or fabric collage projects.

Even if you've never picked up a needle and thread, there is no reason to skip out on trying - especially with a place such as Sewin' Asylum (www.sewinasylum.com) at 8805 W. Union Hills Drive, Peoria.

Owner Erica Doyle provides a workshop environment where people can come in to finish, start or get help with a project. It's a great plan for those who are interested but who don't have access to a machine.

For other sewing ideas and inspirations, check out your local bookstore or cable-TV networks for books and shows.

For more information about National Sewing Month, visit www.sewing.org.

Supplies
Pinking shears
1 fabric image and background fabric for it (3 inches max)
4 pieces of fabric circles (1 1/2 inches round)
Fiberfill stuffing
Chopstick or pencil
Small hole puncher
6 small jump rings
Necklace chain
Needle-nose pliers
Necklace clasp

Directions
Using the pinking shears, line up the front and back fabric and cut out around the shape that you want as the main pendant.

Do the same for the circles. Sew each one around the edges, but leave an opening.

Pinch off a gumball-size piece of Fiberfill and roll it into a ball, use the chopstick or pencil to push it through the hole of the pendant and the circles.

Sew up the ends. Use the hole puncher to create holes on each side of the pieces, and insert jump rings. Connect to the necklace chain. Use the needle-nose pliers to shorten the chain as desired. Add the clasp.

Variations: Connect more pieces together to make a matching bracelet, or make single pieces for earrings. Instead of using necklace chain, sew the pieces together.

Important note about Vickie Howell's new book...

Ok, today is my official Crafty Shout Out Day! And it is also Talk Like a Pirate Day - but we'll just stick with the original plan, mmm kay?

Vickie Howell has some blog posts that I thought I'd share. It's about pattern errors (not her fault!) in her recent book Knitty Gritty Knits.

As artists, designers, and hardcore crafters, we put all our heart and soul into our work. It sucks when there is an error, in any capacity big or small. I could tell this message was very important to Vickie, so I'm reposting it here. She has done so much for the new generation of knitters, we are all so proud of her accomplishments!

Anyway, here ya go...

"It has come to my attention that DIY’s Knitty Gritty Knits (KGK), is filled with pattern errors. While it is common for knitting publications to have occasional errors, the number in the current printing of KGK is unacceptable. This is especially problematic since I am very aware that people rely on me, DIY and the publisher to deliver helpful and accurate information.

I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to anyone who has been inconvenienced due to these oversights, and to assure you that we’re working to fix all of the book’s problems. There will be a complete errata posted on both the Vickie Howell and the Sterling/Lark Publishing websites, as soon as they are produced by a technical editor. Updates will also be posted on my blog (http://vickiehowell.blogspot.com/).

I would also like to respond to specific questions that I have received regarding my involvement in creating Knitty Gritty Knits. I was simply hired to write the introduction, answer general questions during manuscript development, and provide feedback on laser pages. This truly was my first and last time lending my name to a project I didn’t have a large part in creating.

I appreciate your understanding and support in this matter.

Sincerely,
Vickie Howell
Vickie Howell, Inc."

And here is her follow up post:

"Knitty Gritty Knits Errata!

I finally received the errata for Knitty Gritty Knits yesterday. It's really extensive. Really.
Special thanks to Traci Bunkers for her mad technical editing skills and to Jenny Medford for getting it up on my site so quickly. It's unclear whether or not the corrections will be posted anywhere else but my site so if you all could spread the word, I'd really appreciate it. Also, should you need it, here's the link to my initial post about the problems with the book.

Thanks again, for your patience and understanding.

xo,
Vickie"

See PattieWack on LifetimeTV.com today!

My "Crafting With the Chica" segments launch at the end of the month, but in the meantime, go to the site to see two of Pattie Donham's!

Yuppers, they bought crafty webisode series from each of us, which I love because it shows that Lifetime TV sees how big and sparkly the craft community is. Not only will there be more and more DIY videos added, but there are other well-known crafty folks leading the march - such as actress Jane Seymour, and another dear friend of mine, Jean Railla, founder of GetCrafty.com.

When I was first asked by the Arizona Republic to write a weekly craft column, I was like, "Only if I can do hip crafts. Let me poke around online and see if there are others like me..."" Lo and behold, the first site I found was GetCrafty, and that is where I met my good friends Jennifer Perkins, Susan Beal, Vickie Howell and Jenny Hart. Even the editors from our favorite craft magazines, like Adorn, used to be members back in the day. So this Lifetime TV thing really shows how crafting has come full circle and mainstream.

So toss up some glitter and celebrate with all of us, check out the site today!

PROJECT: Decorative Memory Bottles

Recycled bottles get arty touch

Kathy Cano-Murillo
Special for the Republic
Sept. 15, 2007 12:00 AM

Some may think my love of recycling objects into art has gone too far.

But I'm not alone in my discovery of the beauty of glass jars as a means to display artifacts and mementos.

There are many other creative people out there who have been using glass bottles in their crafts. Have you ever polished off a Frappuccino and thought, "Wow, this is a cool bottle!" Well, I have!

I've done the same with mini ketchup and tequila bottles. The trick is to find a bottle that has character and a big enough opening to drop in the goodies. Once you have the inside filled, you can embellish the outside.

Think of it as an untraditional picture frame, or a reverse shadow box. Either way, you'll have an amusing piece of art for your home. This idea would be cute for party favors, gifts or invitations, too.

Decorative Memory Bottles

Supplies
1 chunky glass bottle with lid
Glass paint
Colored sand or pebbles
Color copy of a photo or written poem or verse
Small silk (or dried) flower
Small objects that will slip easily in the bottle
Ribbon
Handmade label

Directions
Thoroughly wash and dry the bottle, removing the label and glue residue.

Apply the glass paint at the top of the bottle around the inside rim so it dribbles down the sides. Pick up the jar and move it around so the paint is equally distributed. Let dry completely. Pour in the colored sand or pebbles at the bottom. Slip in the picture and other objects.

Add the lid and decorate the outside of the jar with the ribbon and label.

The unveiling

So you've read about what it has taken to start and design a product line. We sketched, designed, tested, and made hundreds of mock ups. Next is the scary/exciting part - we had to go present the entire line to the first round of buyers. They look at it as you explain each and every little detail.

This is like submitting a manuscript to an editor and watching her read it right in front of you. You get to see the looks on their faces as it happens. I remember at the newspaper, I would never dare look when I knew an editor was about to read one of my stories for the first time. I worried I would catch a glimpse of them rolling their eyes at my lede and I'd be crushed. And that was for stories about art festivals or celebrity interviews. So imagine the emotions bubbling inside me for this!

I couldn't fall asleep the night before our big meeting because I was so nervous. We were to set up the display at 8 a.m., so I woke up at 5:30 a.m. My original plan was to wear pretty false eyelashes so I could bat my lids at the buyers, but I put them on, and by breakfast, my eyes stung so bad from lack of sleep that my lashes melted off, ala Tammy Faye.

Once we got to our location, we had two hours to set everything up just as it would look on store shelves. I'm telling you, seeing the finished spread, man, it took my breath away. It is nothing like you have ever seen at a craft store. Bright, bold colors, really wild, funky art kits! The packaging is stunning, it looks like you could buy this stuff at Sephora, it is so beautiful. I'm not taking credit for that, the props go to the designers at Duncan. They totally captured my spirit and the vibe I was going for and then sharpened and refined it.

Even though it is early in game, seeing the whole display made me think of something very passionate that I want to share. Call me paranoid, but I know this line will raise eyebrows. There has never been a mainstream craft product line like this. Yes, the initial Crafty Chica roll out has a strong Latino vibe to it, because it is about the arts and crafts I've personally created, sold and taught throughout the past 17 years. I've always sprinkled my work with imagery of my Mexican-American heritage, because I'm proud of it, and adore all the imagery.

When they brought me on board, the folks are Duncan did not say "Kathy, design a line for Hispanics!", they said "Kathy, design a line around Crafty Chica - everything you love and have been doing!".

So even though parts of the line are Latinocentric - it is not only for Latinos. I do not claim to be the poster child for the Latino crafter. Lordy, we all know that there is no "one" type of product line that can cover that because we are all individuals who have different tastes and styles. That's like saying "Design a line for Italian people, or Greek people." It is silly.

When I started making Latino-themed art with my husband in 1990, it was because we wanted to have cool cultural things for our home, but we couldn't find anything at the stores. So we made our own. Other people noticed too, and that's how our art made it into 300 shops and galleries all over the world. Now this craft product line is my way of empowering others to make their own art and accessories that is affordable, doable and fits their personality. And is made with love, of course!

The Crafty Chica product line is for anyone like me - who loves bright colors, lots of glitter, topped with high gloss varnish. People just like this. And it happens that many of those people happen to be Latinas like me! But also other ethnicities too. Chicas from all kinds of backgrounds who proudly wave the anti-pastel flag above their heads. So I just happen to use the triple threat method (color, glitter and gloss) to celebrate my culture! I want the line to inspire everyone to discover and embrace their heritage.

But, there is more to me than my culture. I love self-empowerment, writing, Bollywood films and the glitzy costumes and jewelry. I love vintage and retro imagery. I love rock 'n roll, reggae/tropical stuff, and urban flair too. So as the line expands, you'll see all of that as well.

OK, now back to the meeting...

We covered the display with a big curtain until it was time for the big reveal to the buyers. I would have chewed all my nails off but managed to contain myself. It was a smashing success. So smashing, I held back tears of joy.

My boss reminded me on this trip that it has been exactly six months since she came to Phoenix and offered me this unbelievable job. Six months since my life changed. It feels so good to work so hard doing what you love - only because you love it - and have someone notice it, appreciate it and even compensate you for it!

As soon as we left the building I felt like I just wanted to collapse on a couch and watch a Gregory Nava movie marathon. I was so exhausted from the inside out. Once I got home Thursday night, there were no movies. I crashed out as if I had drank two too many martinis. That's what jet lag from a two-day trip will do to you. Friday I had to gather research from my site, and this weekend and every night until November 1st, I'm working on my sewing book, full throttle.

Although... last night we went out to dinner, and I came up with the most outrageous, kick butt plot for a young adult novel. Oooooo, it's good!!! I can already feel that it is going to be big! I couldn't sleep all night because I was outlining it in my brain. This morning, first thing - I jotted down the outline so I wouldn't forget.

However, I can't start typing one word until my sewing book is 100% polished and perfected. That's my nighttime gig. Next week at Duncan, we start brainstorming and sketching products for Crafty Chica Halloween 2008.

Time to go fire up the espresso machine!

Claudine on Martha! Handmade Nation!

Tomorrow morning I leave for Ohio for the first of our exciting sales meetings! I've decorated and crafted so much with all my Crafty Chicas products that two of my fingers are stuck together with glitter glue. I still haven't washed my hair or packed, so I have to turn in early and then get up at 6 am to do all that, and then get ready for the airport.

I did have another detour. Remember when we were getting ready for the Lifetime crew and hd two days to paint everything and I decided to stucco the fireplace? Well, tonight as I was getting everything ready for Ohio, I - on a whim - decided to trick out a new jeans jacket I bought. I hand sewed more than a hundred buttons, ironed on appliques, and glued on gobs of crystals. not to mention paint and trim. I'll post a picture next time. No, it does not look like Cher would wear it, it is in good taste, I swear. Well, crafty chica good taste that is...

Boy, I'm telling you this summer has been one adventurous rollercoaster ride after another. Between my novel being sold, the Lifetime TV deal, and spending all my days working on the Crafty Chica products, I'm on happy overload! Mucho exhausted too. I have to conserve my energy for the fall season. We are already behind on everything and it is only September 11th!

Before I sign off, I have some BIG news to share about a friend of mine that I bet you know and love too - Claudine Hellmuth.

She is going to be a guest on Martha Stewart on Wednesday, September 12th!!!

Read Claudine's blog because she is detailing every aspect. I'm chewing my nails in excitement for her! I love this because it shows that there are so many crafty opportunities out there if you work hard, stay true to who you are, practice good karma, and not only develop a signature style - but own it too. Claudine embodies all of that and that is why she has so much success and such a strong fan base. Watch and learn people! Way to go, C!

If you need more inspiration to get off your bootay and do something creative, check out the latest and greatest update trailer of the Handmade Nation movie!

Love and miracles.

These are 50 milagros I bought from my friend Robert of Milagro Mercado last weekend. I bought them so I could pass them out today to random people I come across while on my normal local travels. "Milagro" means "miracle" in Spanish, and coupled with the heart design, I think it is a nice message to send out into the universe today.

We all need to be reminded of the power of love and miracles.

Peace and blessings to all of you and your loved ones!

PROJECT: Good Intention Candle

If you've ever felt like no one understands your love for solder wire, yarn, fabric and paper, maybe you need to find a new circle of friends. Crafty friends.

Organized craft collectives have been popping up all over the country, most recently right here in town: the Phoenix Church of Craft, the Phoenix Craft Mafia and the Arizona Crafty Burrito Collective and my group, The Phoenix Fridas to name a few.

These groups are made up of artists who meet once a month and plan events not only to sell their work but to inspire others to pick up a craft.

I recently chatted with Meghan Oleson, the "reverend" of the Phoenix chapter of the Church of Craft. Glory to glitter, she had some great answers to my questions, as well as a happy candle project.

WANTED: Funny sewing anecdotes and more!

Image copyright Stephanie Asher

As of right NOW I'm in production of my next book, tentatively titled Crafty Chica's Guide to Artful Stitching. Want to be in it? Here is the deal:

It's a fun, artful, bouncy, kamikaze style sewing book for Potter Craft. My story: I haphazardly learned to work my sewing machine on sheer will and determination. I'm pretty dang proud of my progress and the art that has come out of my pedal to the metal stitching tactics. I never had a class before I started sewing seven years ago. Well, 7th grade Home Ec, but I forgot most of it. I had access to my mom's machine, but I was intimidated.

After after my Nana Cano, an excellent seamstress, passed away, Patrick bought me a machine and encouraged me to give it a spin. I summoned her energy and happy spirit and I haven't stopped yet.

It got me thinking of how many others there must be like me. Maybe they have machines but are frightened to use them. So this book is about overcoming that nonsense, and just having fun. To use sewing as a way to add flair and texture to your craft projects, clothing, home decorations and more.

I've decided to sprinkle my book with anecdotes from my fellow crafters. Mistakes happen, but we overcome them!

I'm currently accepting submissions for three topics:

1. One paragraph about your ultimate funny sewing memory. Did you ever have a Mission Impossible thread challenge? Home Ec disaster? Send it in!

2. Your most treasured tip when it comes to sewing.

3. High res photo of extremely creative/over-the-top sewing art or fashion item to be featured in a "gallery" spread at the back of the book.

Please include your name, age, city you live in, occupation AND email address and/or website.

Send it to me HERE

DEADLINE: September 30th, 2007

Please pass this along!

Manu Chao's new disc is out!

Manu Chao is one of my all-time favorite musical artists. So much that sometimes Patrick even gets jealous because of all my raving. Especially when I asked if we could drive to Cali to see Manu Chao perform. on Patrick's birthday. Didn't go over too well. JK, Patrick wants to see him in concert too (he better!). Someday, I hope. In the meantime, it's earbud city for me.

Manu's new album La Radiolina just came out Tuesday. I'm eagerly waiting for my copy to arrive. Normally I nab my discs off of iTunes, but not this one. Nuh-uh. I want the actual CD, just to see the artwork, read the liner notes and kiss the cover. Don't tell Patrick!

Here is one of three videos for the track, Rainin' in Paradise. It is my favorite because of all the visual elements. Manu Chao is great music to create art too. His lyrics and melodies will jump start your spirit and make your mind trip out (in a good way!).

PROJECT: Cafe Bustelo Clock

I'm a coffee fanatic, and I love me some Cafe Bustelo. I can't bear to toss out the cans after I'm done downing the java. I use these cans all over my workspace to hold my paintbrushes, pens, markers, etc.

This particular can I used to make an adorable clock for my kitchen. I loved it so much that I even included it in one of my books. Making it is as easy as dropping a sugar cube in a cup!

Supplies:

1 Cafe Bustelo can (or any other interesting looking can)
1 handheld rotary tool (Dremel!)
1 clock mechanism with arms (found at the craft store in the wood aisle)
4 round wood balls painted red
Hot glue

Directions: Simply drill a hole in the center of the can where you want the clock to go. Attach the clock. Glue the balls on the bottom. Put the plastic lif on the top of the can. Remove it when you need to change the battery.

PROJECT: Indian Paper Covered Plant Stand

While I was shopping at IKEA recently, I came across these delicious rolls of handmade wrapping paper from India. You know - the thick, textured kind that have been stamped with metallic inks?

Kinda like this but in brighter colors. I can't find them on the IKEA site. Hold on a sec, speaking of paper for decoration purposes - you MUST check out PaperMojo.com. (*fans face with hand*) It has exotic paper beyond your wildest dreams...

Back to the point - I bought a couple rolls, and when I got home I found a wood storage box I had hanging around the workshop (that's my new term for our art room, by the way). I decided to cover the box with the paper so I could have a nice plant stand for the corner of the family room.

STEP ONE: Admire the supplies for this cool idea!

STEP TWO: Lay a sheet of the paper face down and rest the box on top. Trace with pencil. Repeat for the three other sides. Cut out pieces. Repeat for the top of the box.

STEP THREE: Use Aleene's Crystal Clear Tacky Spray to coat the side of the box. Lay the paper flat and smooth out any bubbles. Repeat for remaing sides. Add paper to the top. Add trim as desired.

STEP FOUR: Step back and admire this cool project!

Back in the (glittered) saddle

Pardon the delay in posting - my modem konked out this weekend and I wasn't able to get a new one until this morning. It felt good to take a little break, even if I did sneak and check my Gmail on my cell phone every so often.

So. We finished up the webisodes! 12 of those little babies. My blood, sweat, and tears went into each and every one. Literally! But I also put in lots of happiness, thought, quality, and of course - glitter!

Tuesday was crazy because we had worked from the previous Friday night until 5 p.m. Tuesday on prepping the house for the crew. We painted over our purple walls, stuccoed the fireplace (I did it on a whim early Saturday morning: "There is so much to do, how will we ever finish? Oooo, I think I'll stucco the fireplace!"). It's OK, I think we became so high on paint fumes that all of us went off on a tangent. At one point on Monday, I looked up from painting the trim to find Patrick applying a faux stained glass effect to the family room door that leads to the patio. ??????

It felt like one of those beat the clock home makeover shows because at 4:45 Tuesday, me, Patrick, DeAngelo and Maya were running around bumping into eachother finishing up. We didn't complete everything we wanted, but it was a good start. At 5:05 p.m., Lisa, Quanda, and Erin from Bungalow 3 entered our happy latex-scented home and began the inspection. I waited with baited breath as I led them from corner to corner.

They loved it! They said they loved it because it represented what "Crafty Chica" is all about - lots of bright colors, lots of art and upbeat energy! The whole concept of "Crafting With the Chica" is me bringing YOU into my world, the place where I concoct all these ideas and make them happen. That's why it has a homey, cozy feel to it, every project is very personal!

Also on Tuesday evening, Quanda had me model my 12 outfits, and a few of them didn't make the cut, but I promised her I would come up with fitting solutions (which I did on the last day of shooting!).

It was cute because she looked at my toes. "And...did you get a pedicure, Kathy?"

I cleared my throat and launched into my soapbox speech about why I didn't want to sit on the floor and craft. Finally, she gave in! I love you Quanda, thank you!!

The team then left to go shopping for accessories the sets, and I went to work on making my projects. Around 8 p.m., I felt a cold coming on. Maya and I went to Walgreens and picked up some Airborne. OMG, it worked!! I took it every three hours and I had no trace of a cold until today. I'm on it again right now. Anyway, last Tuesday night, I got to bed at 3:45 a.m. and woke up at 5 a.m.

My friend and professional make up queen, Erica Konz, came by at 7 a.m. Wednesday morning to tranform me into a fashionista couture-looking crafter, false eyelashes and all. I am so hooked on falsies now, it's not even funny.

During that time, Lisa went to work staging the kitchen with the accessories she bought the night before, as well as artwork she pulled from around our house. She even included my lucky Chihuahua that my friend Carrie gave me!

By the time she finished, I didn't even recognize the room, it was so beautiful. I mean, it was still my kitchen, but she just added some little touches here and there that packed a punch. Within one hour we were ready to begin the first of the 12 eps. I had my outfit, my project, a gorgeous set, and perfect hair that I had just had cut the day before. We began the shoot, but within minutes, Brian, the sound guy yelled "CUT! I can hear the air conditioner, we have to kill it!"

The crew took turns putting on his headphones and agreed. In my mind, I'm thinking that it is supposed to be 113 degrees outside, and surely they can't mean to TURN OFF the air conditioner. Ha! That would be unheard of, right? Phoenix? August? Film shoot? No air?

Yup. That's what they meant. We went on to film for the remaining 8 hours with no air. Normally I'm a rock solid trooper, but because of my lack of sleep, I began to droop around 2 p.m. - when I say droop I mean my face, my eyelids - and my glue gun.

I started whining. Eee gads, just like my kids! How embarrassing!

"Do we really have to film any more today? I...I...I... have a stomach ache. I'm hot. My eyelashes are wilting...my hair is poofing like Rosanne Rosanna Danna."

"Sorry chica, they chimed in unison. "We have to finish at least three. We know you can do it! You're the crafty chica!!! Come on, show us that glittery energy you are known for!!"

I gulped and centered myself. I reminded myself that I was in the middle of an amazing opportunity. Lifetime TV!!!! My goosebumps returned. I noted that this wonderful, talented crew was just as sticky and uncomfortable as me. They were all counting on me!! I looked at my finished project that I was to demo and summoned the crafty gods to zap me with a shot of andrenaline. It worked! We finished, and everything came out perfect. I thanked the team for pushing me when I didn't think I had it in me to continue. Even my false eyelashes were still intact!

After they left, Maya rubbed my feet and I slept until 3:30 a.m., and then the next day started all over. Except this time, the crew rented a 5-ton air conditioner, which was placed in our laundry room. It had two huge blowers that were fed into the kitchen. We flipped that sucker on in between segments and it made the house icy cold.

We wrapped Friday night. On the previous Monday I remember thinking how long of a week it was going to be. By Wednesday, it seemed like we were just starting. Next thing you know, we were done. Not only was it a memorable experience as far as crafting, it was mostly memorable for bring able to work with Lisa, Quanda, Erin, Brian and Jeff. I can't believe it's all over :-(

The first epsiode is supposed to go up next week on LifetimeTV.com. I'm thrilled because this was the first time I've ever done anything like this. I have so much respect for people who host TV shows for a living. So much goes into it. And trying to ad lib, without sounding reptitive is more difficult than it sounds. However, I channeled my inner Samantha Brown because the crew kept telling me: "More! Give us more! Be super, super, SUPER perky!" So, you'll notice that I'm SUPER perky. And the set is SUPER perky, and so are the projects.

I love it all! It was so much fun - every second. Our house has a sweet little makeover, and there are still traces of glitter around the house. Everytime I see one it makes me smile. Also, Quanda laid out all my jewelry on a table so she could dress me before each segment. It never dawned on me how many cool necklaces, bracelets and rings I have! This weekend I devoted a whole wall to them! Just like art work!

OK, here are some pictures!
