Oscar Night Candy Bites

With the Academy Awards airing Sunday, I thought I'd share a movie-inspired project with you. Break out the gold glitter and invite some friends over to watch the event and craft. If not, celebrate on your own. Either way, you'll need munchies. Here is a nifty way to make custom chocolate-bar labels for all the Oscar nominees. Each one has a bite of trivia to make the night even sweeter. (By the way, good luck Jennifer Hudson!

HERE ARE THE printable directions.

This week's shout outs

OK, so here are some new cyber scores I found this week. Hope you like them too!

1. Fieltromaina blog.
This is a spanish-language web site deciated to all things made with FELT!! And I'm talking super swell goodies like books, buttons, pins, all kinds of chic cosas. And it's A-OK if you don't speak Spanish because they also have some stuff in English. LINK

2. We Love Crafts Magazine.
This is like the sister site to the above-mentioned blog. It is also Spanish-friendly. What I love most about this concept is that it is geared at the hip Latina artist/crafter. It features artistas from all over the world, and thier fabulous work too. Plus, it's a great way to brush up on your Spanish. At least for me it is. Major props to these chicas for their hard work. Go send them some love! LINK

3. Crafty Gear
Have you heard of this store yet? It has all kinds of tricked out shirts for hardcore crafty junkies like me. LINK

4. Latin Art Forum
This a nice online community for Latino artists. I haven't had time to join, but I plan to very soon. LINK
http://www2.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gif

5. Patterns From the Past
Do you ever feel like you should be wearing a specific dress from 1955, but don't have the means to find it? Here is a way to make it yourself, dah-lings! This web site has all kinds of vintage patterns from yesteryear that are just waiting to be put to good use. They even have plus-size flapper dress patterns! LINK

6. Ugly Betty "Design a Dress" contest winner
Did any of you see the Ugly Betty episode last week where the contest winner's design was used? My adorable crafty amiga, Alyson of Duncan Crafts' Fashion Girl Blog, put the link up! The champion was Ricardo Rodriguez (above photo). And here is where you can see other entries. LINK

Before I close out this post, I can't mention Duncan without sharing my new ad!! This is like winning the multi-million dollar lottery (in crafty terms). Duncan asked me to endorse Aleene's Tacky Glue for somem agazine ads, and for the CHA show. That's like Starbucks asking me to endorse their mochas!! I was like..."um, YES!!" The first ad runs in Get Creative Magazine (new issue!) and here is a sneak peek of it. I've never modeled for an ad before, this is new territory for me.

And of course, all the projects you see on my site are/were/will (be) made with Aleene's glues. And that was before I signed on with them! Remember I told you about the Craft & Hobby show last month? Well Duncan has put together a video of their booth and all their new products! LINK Check it out by clicking where it says "take a tour". While you're at it, stop by Alyson's blog and say hi!

7. Reggaeton scrapbook papers, embellishments & stamps!
Ay, mamita! Can you imagine? Latin Oh! is a muy trendy scrapbook manufacturer that has a new line called "Ritm- Oh!".

8. Sugar skull chipboard cut outs
I just got an email today from scrapbook designer Susan Rodriguez about her new line of chipboard treasures. This is just one of them, visit the link to see the others! Awesome, Susan! LINK

So there are my shout outs!

My goofy attempt at illustration

I've always, always, always wanted to be a painter or illustrator. I ended up marrying one instead. Over the years, I've clumsily tried to sketch out my own little corner in the universe, but my drawings always end up looking like drag queens. Well, last night after finishing the latest batch of orders, - oh - I'd say around midnight - I got the itch to try to draw again. I barely stopped a few minutes ago. Here is what the last 24 hours has produced. I think I got it all out of my system for the next 2 years!!

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
OK, this was the first one I did. I didn't mean for her to look like Dolly Parton's lost Latina cousin, but that's how she came out.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
This one I call Bohemian Chica". She has a strong Earth mama feel to her and it was so late, I could not stop doodling on her dress. Yah, that's a poncho she has on.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
This one is kinda tranny looking. I made her shoulders too broad and there is something funky with her eyes and lips. And she looks like she is hiding an illegal glue gun behind her back. Like the Jay Leno chin? Ah well, practice makes perfect.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
This is my favorite. She has that Holly Golightly spirit. I had so much trouble with the hands and feet. I finally said "the heck with it!" and just finished the darn thing!

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
This one is a tribute to curly redheads! I need to fill in her haircolor at the back of her neck!

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
This one didn't quite fit on my scanner, but it is of an angel. Flowy hair is hard to tackle.

I won't be quitting my day job. But I did have a blast doing something different and exercising different creative muscles. I give so much credit to painters and illustrators because you really have to clear your mind and focus on the task at hand. One slip and your work is screwed. And the whole proportion thing? It makes learning Chinese look easy

MUST SEE movie trailers!

Movies and crafts are two of my favorite passions. I watch movies a lot while I work in my studio - and I often get inspired to make things after seeing certain films. I swear, after Nacho Libre, I could hardly wait to get home and make a Lucha Libre cape with pompom fringe!! And then there are times when craftiness doesn't come to mind at all.

Regardless, here are two movies that I'm looking forward to seeing. I've been waiting for the traliers to be released and I just found them!

Oh - Just wait until next week when I spill a gnarly project for Oscar night!

The first is Bordertown.
It stars Jennifer Lopez and is directed by one of my all-time favorite camera dudes, Gregory Nava (El Norte, Selena, Mi Familila). I swear, if my novel ever makes it to a movie, I want Mr. N to direct it! OK, so this film is about the mysterious murders of hundreds of women on the border of Juarez and El Paso. By the way, this trailer is in German. Sorry. It's all that was available.

Next is Across the Universe.
Think Moulin Rouge-meets-The Beatles-meets the 1960s. AND is directed by Julie Taymor (Frida!). I have a feeling there will be gobs of crafty ideas in this one. The opening song along gives me happy goosebumps. At first I thought it was Ewan McGregor singing and almost kissed my computer screen.

Edited to add: OK, I just watched this trailer again. I changed my mind. If my book is every made into a movie, I want Julie Taymor to direct it...

Sexy Knitting Books

I get stacks of craft books across my desk at work to review. After a while, unfortunately, they all kinda start to look the same. But when a book piques my interest, I set it off to the side of my desk. Recently I noticed a pattern with my stack. They all had a saucy theme to them!

I'm a clumsy knitter, but thanks to these books, I think I will polish up my skills a.s.a.p....

Here is the link to my story, Who needs sweaters? Turn up heat with knitted lingerie.

Here are the books I mentioned in the story:

Naughty Needles: Sexy, Saucy Knits for the Bedroom and Beyond, by Nikol Lohr

Domiknitrix: Whip Your Knitting Into Shape, by Jennifer Stafford

Sexy Little Knits: Chic Designs to Knit and Crochet, by Ashley Paige

Not Tonight Darling, I'm Knitting, by Betty Hosegood

Recent articles

Here are some of my recent stories from the newspaper. We are all changing jobs next month and I'm not sure how much longer I'll be covering flicks on a regular basis (big sniffle!!) anymore.

Bridge to Terabithia.
I didn't read the book and was therefore SHOCKED at the events in the story. I sobbed so hard on the way home, Patrick wanted me to pull over to the side of the road. A bit later, I went to get my hair cut and my stylist, Lorene, asked me to please stop crying. I wept all night thinking about this dang movie. So I was happy when the time finally came to interview the two kids who starred in the film and to see they were alright (and alive). The best moment came at the end of the interview when AnnaSophia Robb asked me where I got my purse and I told I made it. She was like "No way, that is the coolest purse I've ever seen in my LIFE!" OK, she won me over as a lifelong card carrying fan. Here is my interview.

Star Jones.
No, I didn't ask about The View, and Rosie, etc...Star was in town doing work for Fresh Start Women's Foundation, a place where I've volunteered. Star is doing a lot of awesome work for the organization and that's cool by me! Here is the interview.

American Idol.
I write a weekly commentary column with a co-worker.
And a blog, which we update every other day or so.

Crafty Cinema: Frida Pillowcase

We had sooooo much FUN on Uncommon Threads last week.

When I say "we", I mean my craft group, The Phoenix Fridas. One of the projects was inspired by the movie, Frida. Well, no. Scratch that. It was inspired by FRIDA, herself. She used to make the ornate cross-stitch pillows for her bed, and in the film, director Julie Taymor made sure to include them in the set design.

I loooove to make craft projects inspired by movies. I even tried to sell the idea as a book to publishers last year but the "crafts + movies" concept didn't fly. So it must just be something only I'm into. Oh well. At least the DIY Network liked the idea and let me share this project. And I do plan to share Crafty Cinema here with all the projects from my proposal ;-)

I'm not a swift cross-stitcher, but I can embroider. For directions, click here.

While you are there, check out the projects my friend Carmen made!! Just go to...

Right now

Haven't blogged in a while. It feels weird. I used to blog every night and let that habit slip away. Every other day I get an email from someone who asks "Where are you, why aren't you blogging?" I didn't realize anyone really paid attention!

So I'm going to try and get back into the routine of it. I think blogging is an excellent way of memory keeping when you don't have time or resources for scrap booking or even snapping photos. I love to click back on my old posts and read goofy stories about my kids or my crafty catastrophes. There is no way I could remember so much detail now. Jeez, the craft convention was less than a month ago, and I'm already forgetting some of the awesome moments.

So before I start my kamikaze blogging session, I'll bring you up to date on what is happening right now. The kids are both out with friends, we have a new puppy in the house (more on that in a later), I just finished a batch of orders (our rings are selling like Coach purses fresh out of the factory) and was attempting to get into the spirit of The Friday Night Knitting Club.

I don't know what my problem is with this book. I've been anxiously waiting for it when I saw the sale announced on Publisher's Lunch a couple years back. I bought it a couple weeks ago and have been struggling to get into it. I know it will be a fabulous read, it's just a little heavy at the front and a bit more serious than what I've been into lately. But I'm not giving up. It's beautifully written and I plan to like it, no matter what!

OK, now about the puppy. It's Theresa's (my sister). I think in her former life she was a dog whisperer because pooches are the only thing in this world that seem to make her 100% happy. She has a beagle named Lola, but hasn't had the time or resources to own another pet.

Until yesterday.

Let me set the scene how this came to be. At work, we are all under a lot of stress. I work in the newsroom and Theresa works in the online department. The news organization we work for is...let's just say "mixing things up a bit" and combining both departments. Overall, it's a smart move because the company has to keep up with these ever-changing times and all, but the bummer is we all have reapply for our gigs. And some of our jobs aren't there anymore. However, there are new jobs to try for. In theory, it's an exciting time because we can all apply for whatever dream job we want, but it's scary because not every one will get their dream title.

While I'm more of a "think positive, have faith, work hard" kind of person, my sis falls on the "HOLY CRAP!!!!" sideline. She's been frowning ever since the announcements were made. Not even a truckload of puppies could cheer her up these days. So, yesterday as we were leaving the building to head home, what do we see in front of the building?

A truckload of puppies! They did indeed, cheer her up, right at the first sight of them. We both practically leapt over to the scene, as if Godiva were passing out free samples. I had barely picked up one of the puppies when Theresa shoved me out of the way and grabbed a tri-colored male. I stepped back and released a satisfying sigh of relief. It felt good to see her happy, giggly and cudding these little furry snowballs of joy. Shih Tzus!

Theresa held one up to her face, shut her eyes and nuzzled her nose in its neck.
"How much?", she cooed.
"$375" the lady replied.
"I want one." Theresa said.

I just about choked on my gum. My mind started putting all the hints together that these folks were, um, shady. They were filthy dirty, missing teeth, kinda looked like they were strung out, the truck had out-of-state plates (Arkansas!) and it reaked of gasoline. Even worse, they had THREE litters - all males. No papers. I tried to talk Theresa into thinking on it overnight, but she marched right over to the ATM, got the cash and handed it over to the woman, who then scribbled out a reciept on a piece of notebook paper.

It's the day after, and Theresa has no regrets. She says she is happy to have rescued the pup from those scary hillbillies who looked like they had just stepped out of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre set.

Today we babysat the doggy until she got home from work and, yup, I can see why my hermanita fell in love with him. He doesn't have a name yet, I think she is going to call him Rocco.

Love Note Candy Pouches

A person can never say, "I love you," too much. In fact, I think we should come up with different romantic phrases, and deliver the message in any and all creative ways possible.

Skywriting, the JumboTron and singing telegrams are sweet, but kind of cliche. Think small and secretive.

Make a list of your favorite "love" phrases, quotes or fortunes, type them up and print them out on paper. Cut them to the size of small slips (fortune-cookie size).

If you don't want to go the predictable "Roses are red, violets are blue" route, use specific memories. Pick all the best moments from your relationship and summarize each one in a sentence or two.

Insert them into these cute little pouches made from heart-shaped doilies. Fill them with small Valentine-themed candy and then hide the pouches randomly around the house where your object of affection will find them.

If you want to make a game out of it, put a love-themed clue or riddle inside each one and make the person give you the correct answer so they can receive their prize!

I used paper doilies for this project, but you can use anything: fabric, card stock, scrapbook paper, vellum paper, even lightweight wire mesh.

If you are using solid color paper or doilies, make the most of the white space by embellishing with stickers, fibers, rubber stamps and embossing powder.

Doilies and paints can be found at the craft store. Romantic images seen in my sample project are from www.ArtChixStudio.com.

Crafting a Healthy Heart

Last year my dad went through a triple bypass. Part of the process the patients go through is having to cough to clear out their system. It hurts, considering that their chest has just been ripped apart and put back together. I remember seeing my dad's eyes water everytime he had to cough and that made my eyes water too!

The process entails them clutching a large pillow to their chest. My dad had his surgery at Thunderbird Banner Heath (nice place!) and they had many heart-shaped pillows that had been donated by local sewers.

Of course, being crafty little me, I couldn't dare let my precious padre use one of the donated pillows, although they were quite lovely. The night before his surgery I furiously cranked out a picture pillow in the shape of a heart for him to use. I took photos of my mom, me, my brother, sister and my kids and copied them to fabric and used them for the fabric.

I'm such a cry baby. The entire time, I cried and prayed, prayed and cried while putting together all the pieces. Especially while cutting up all these beautiful photos of my dad at all different ages. I even smeared some of the ink on the transfer fabric because of water streaming down my cheeks, off my chin and on to my work table. Even so, the sewing of the pillow helped calm my nerves and it gave me hope that my crafty skills would literally help heal my pop. The thought of my one and only dad going through such a big operation was mind blowing and quite traumatic for the entire familia. Thank God, he came out as good as new!! Even telling jokes to the surgeon! And best of all, he is still doing great today, and in fact, he will celebrate his 70th birthday this week. Rock on, Daddy!!

So anyway, about the pillows. I was poking around Fiskars web site (they had lots of new fantastic products at the CHA show!) and I came across this wonderful contest that choked me up.

Fiskars is teaming up with the American Heart Association for a pillow crafting contest!! Here is the text from the site:

Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of American women. The good news is that heart disease can largely be prevented through diet, exercise and risk factor reduction. While recovering from surgery, some patients find that holding a pillow tight to their chest helps ease the pain of coughing.

Join Fiskars in supporting the American Heart Association by entering our pillow crafting contest.

When complete, upload your finished project to our gallery. On March 10th winners will be chosen to receive the limited edition American Heart Association products from Fiskars. Give your pillow to a friend recovering from heart surgery, or donate it to your local American Heart Association.

Click here to find out more about the limited edition American Heart Association products. http://www.fiskarscrafts.com/articles/t_support-the-american-heart-associa.aspx

Here are directions from Fiskars for making a heart pillow. Check back soon because I will post a picture of the pillow I made for my dad (ie: I'm running to my parent's house right now to snap a picture!)

Aside from the contest, if you have free time and are looking for a craft to donate, the heart pillows are an awesome avenue. Call your local heart care center and ask if they take them. One thing I remember while spending so much time at the hospital is seeing all of the bypass patients hug those love cushions with all their might against their chests.

Hello??? How much closer can you get to sending some love, than to make a heart pillow that will heal a person on the inside AND out???

Men Who Knit: Ryan Gosling!

I'll admit it right here. I LOVE The Notebook. I watch it at least once a month and go through half a box of tissues each time. Ryan Gosling is the ultimate strong and silent type, know what I mean? So now we have another reason to admire him even more. This is an except from USA Today interview:

Q: You've played a crackhead and a Jewish neo-Nazi. What are you up to next?
A: I'm going to do this film that I wrote and that I'm going to direct in Africa, called The Lord's Resistance, about the Lord's Resistance army of child soldiers in Uganda.

Q: Wow, intense. How do you relax?
A: I knit. Yeah. I really do. I knit scarves. I bake.

You what is so sad? I could swear I've interviewed him before for my Hollywood Q&A column, but I can't remember! I'll have to search the Save archives at work tomorrow. Here is the link to the USA Today article.

My trip to Anaheim, part 1

My sister-in-law (a professional interior designer) came with me, and much to my delight - she took all of my advice and 100% prepared for CHA. In the Cano family, she is known and the high preistess of centerpieces and gift wrap. Seriously. This girl makes towering giftscapes made of graduated boxes trimmed in beads, tulle, papers and all kinds of other embellishments. She took pictures of her work, color copied them and assembled them in a thin white 8-1/2 x 11" envelope. She set up a web site, had business cards printed and made a fact sheet about her crafty work that had been published. Perfect. Believe me, they came in handy later in the week!

After checking into our room on Saturday morning, we headed over to the convention center to check in. The show hadn't even begun (it started Sunday) and chaos was already in place. The kind of chaos that makes your eyes twinkle and your foot tap non-stop. Imagine thousands of crazed, excited crafters under one roof. Lots of funky dyed hair, wildly decorated name badges, picture purses, embroidered jackets and everyone saying the same thing: "Yes! I made this!"

Because I was reporting for the paper and also because I had two seminars I was speaking at, I went to the press room to pick up media kits that the vendors set out. Even though I [planned to walk the entire show, there is always something I miss, and perusing the press kits helps. BTW: I plan to do an upcoming story on assembling a good press kit. But for now, all I can say, compact, concise info and colorful photos are the best way to go. Michelle and I managed to leave the grounds and head back to our hotel, The Annabella Anaheim, which I highly reccommend! It was right across the street from Disney's California Adventure and we could hear the screams coming from the victims of the California Screamin' roller coaster (me no like that rollercoaster!)

Later in the day, way-too-kind and totally cool Nancy Marmolejo from Comadre Coaching picked us up and drove across the city to Ventura Blvd to visit HandMade Galleries. (Handmade Galleries, Inc. 14556 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks, CA)

This store is soooo hot. It's like a punk rock version of (the now defunct) Coomers, with a dash of Spencer's thrown in. And come to find out, Andie, the owner is a frequent visitor to my web site. so naturally, I signed up for a space for Patrick and I to peddle our wares. As of March 1st, we'll have a full-on Chicano Pop Art space there! Afterwards we met up with Andie, and Nancy's sister Katie, who happens to work at Disney. We ate at The Amazon Bar & Grill where we swapped gobs of celebrity encounters while eating fried plantains.

The next morning I had to get up at 5:30 am. My demo at Duncan Crafts began at 9 and I wanted to get there super early to set up. What I loved most about the day was getting to chat with the staff from Duncan. Did you know there are happy shiny people in dream jobs that pertain every aspect of craft supplies? I know because I met all of them. The people who actually invent, design and promote all these products!! Aside from asking them zillion questions, I spent the day showing CHA attendees how to make a Mexican Cowgirl Matchbox Shrines. Next to me, Patti Wack did a demo showing how to make altered clipboards, that were a big hit.

Oh, I forgot to mention that Duncan had these massive Shrek-sized cutouts of each of us deisgners. THat is Pattie's up there. Are you ready to see mine?

I even met the poor guy who had to cut this out using an Exacto knife. Imagine how long it took him! This cut out is on it's way home to me so I can freak out the kids with it!

After I finished eight hours of my demo, I spent some time prepping for my presentations that were the next morning. A bit later we went to the Martha Stewart keynote speech. I have to go now because Lily Allen is coming out on SNL in a few minutes and I don't want to miss her. I'll finish this up manana...

What is CHA anyway?

Photo from CHA Winter Show: Artist Traci Bautista in the Duncan Crafts booth teaching a Fabric Fusion headband "make it, take it" project to DIY Network TV hosts Jennifer Perkins and Vickie Howell, and TV producer Lisa Sicci. Thanks to Jen for use of the photo!

So..I just got back from the Craft & Hobby World's Fair, a huge trade show produced by the Craft and Hobby Association.

Every time I mention the event to everyday crafters, they don't quite understand what it entails. Before I begin power posting about all my adventures there (and boy were they ever memorable!), I'll shed some light on what CHA is all about. Please keep in mind that I'm just sharing this info off the top of my noggin. If you want all the knitty gritty details, put on your specs and check out the CHA web site from top to bottom.

CHA is an organization that caters to the professional craft industry. That's a pretty wide umbrella. It basically includes:

Manufacturers. These are the big and small companies that come with all those cool products we see on store shelves. Their mission is to set trends and come up with brand spankin' new goodies for us to use.

Buyers. These are the merchandise buyers for large and small stores.

Designers. These are professional artists and crafters who come up with "out of the box" ideas for using those products to relay to the consumer. Many designers are also book authors and TV personalities.

Everyone is on the same page when it comes to the mission: to keep the crafts industry thriving! The actual trade show is held twice a year. The larger one is the winter show. It consists of 3,500 booths, 20,000 attendees and 46 nations!

This past winter show was held at the Anaheim Convention Center where rows and rows of exhibitor booths and vendors eagerly waited for buyers to come by, drool over their offerings and place mega orders. I'm talking scrapbook companies, plus paint, fabric, yarn and on and on. Many of the booths have demo tables where artists show clever ways to use the products. Also in the mix are publishing houses displaying their new titles. Many of the vendors have cocktail parties, author signings, contests, etc. Throughout the week, there are oodles of seminars, workshops and recpetions. There is just so much to soak up, it's total madness. I wish I could have split myself into four people in order to cover it all.

Walking the exhibit floor are buyers, as well as book and/or magazine editors looking for new authors/designers. Plus artists hoping to get their work seen/published/picked up and media people in search of trends and perky personalities to profile. Many companies and TV shows film videos at the show that they will air later on in the year. Everything shown at the event will eventually be seen at retail level.

If you craft for a hobby and have always wanted to do it professionally - you totally can. You can join CHA and attend the show (they even have a designer showcase at the front of the show!), or you can start right now by picking up your favorite crafting and art magazines. Somewhere in there you'll find a "call for submissions", which lists the upcoming themes for future issues. Follow the directions and submit your work. The same works for books. Visit your favorite publishers web site to see how they take submissions. Now, if that sounds like too much work, you can always go grassroots stylee and start up a blog and post your projects there.

Ok, there's the Crafty Chica 411 on CHA! Hope the info is useful!

New Craft TV Show also - internships!

I was cruising the crafty industry sites earlier and came across this at Craftrends.com:

Coats & Clark announced the creation of Knit & Crochet Today, a 30-minute program the company plans to air on PBS television stations. Hosting the show is Kassie DePaiva, who plays Blair Manning on the daytime soap opera One Life to Live. For the past few years she has been crocheting hats that are sold to benefit her favorite charity, the League for the Hard of Hearing.

The show is produced by Candice Jensen Productions and is described as a how-to show in an entertainment format. It will feature projects and techniques from top designers and experts, as well as field pieces on the industry and human interest stories.

Coats & Clark plans to support the show with print advertising in craft magazines, online links to web sites and blogs, on-pack advertising with the new Kassie DePaiva “Happy Hat” Knit Kits, and potential point-of-sale and cross-promotional opportunities via TV tie-in partners.

Love Song Pillowcase

(lyrics from Cameo's song, Sparkle)

Don't you want to be the last thing on your significant other's mind before he/she falls asleep? Diamonds and roses are nice, but they won't do the trick. But a Love Song Pillowcase will. Choose your favorite tune - maybe one from your wedding or first date - write the lyrics on a pillowcase, then dye it whatever shade you want. Imagine your sweetie snuggling up to your sentimental, romantic verses long after Valentine's Day has gone.

This concoction uses fabric-friendly supplies to ensure the pillowcase will be soft and irresistibly huggable. Just like you!

This is also a fun project for kids to try. Let them draw on the pillowcase or scribble a love note. Resist medium and fabric spray paint can be found in the clothing aisles at the craft store.

I used Tulip Fabric Spray in bright red, and then covered with a coat of gold glitter fabric spray.

For the fabric resist, a couple people emailed me today that they could not find Batik EZ at the craft store. Lo and behold, I found that Tulip makes it too! You want to look for a label that says "fabric resist."

Sassy Valentine Charms

(Sassy Valentine Charms, by Margot Potter)

With 2007 rolling along nicely, I've come to really appreciate my seventh year writing my craft column for The Arizona Republic and Gannett News Service. Can you believe this column runs in 50 papers every week around the country? I look at it like I have a serious job to do. To educate and entertain all of you about all the crafty personalities and offerings out there.

Every month, sometimes more than once a month, I'm going to feature Q and A's with creative people of all types. I just came from the Craft and Hobby Show and met many of them. One of my missions for this year is to inspire as many people as I can about crafting, hip Hispanic crafts, crafty careers, writing, book deals, manufacturing, promoting yourself and so forth. Granted, I won't be able to do it for you or hand out short cuts, but I will offer tips and tricks to get you rolling! I've found the most successful people are the ones who truly break a sweat (and smile the whole time) when it comes to getting their business off the ground.

What better way than to kick off this feature than with Mistress of the Bead(TM), Margot Potter? I know you've read about her here lots of times before, but seriously, girlfriend juggles several crafty gigs at once. I'm flippin' amazed. The picture above are some Sassy Valentine Charms from her recent book, The Impatient Beader Gets Inspired.

CLICK HERE TO READ THE STORY. THe directions only appeared in the print version of the article, but they are in her new book!

Tempting Tea Lights

The first goal of the year should be to take care of your mind, body and spirit. A big part of that is eating healthfully, exercising and practicing good karma.

Don't forget to take a break to relax and clear your brain. Because we're cleaning out our houses anyway, moving around furniture and such, this is a logical time to find a soothing corner in your living space and make it your own.

Take a day to paint and decorate an end table and comfy chair in your favorite fabric or paint color, crack open a new journal, a juicy ink pen and let your mind wander - even if it is for just 15 minutes a day. Part of that process should involve candles.

The flickering flames of tea lights do wonders to set the mood, especially if you choose your favorite scent and dress up the tin containers with strips of decorative paper. Set the candles on a mirror and reflections will quadruple.

Always use caution around candles; extinguish them when you leave the area.

Valentine's Granny Bag

Sometimes decoupage is too sticky to be fun, and stickers look less than classy. Thankfully, there is a happy medium - Lazertran transfer sheets. It's a clean way to apply an image to any object without using glue.

Here's how it works: Photocopy a picture onto one of the sheets; soak it in water to see it turn into a thin, clear decal that can be applied to any surface. I have a soft spot for granny handbags that are readily available at the thrift store, so for this project I combined that with an old-fashioned valentine theme.

Valentine Granny Handbag

Supplies

1 vintage handbag with smooth side panels
1 sheet of Lazertran transfer paper for InkJet printers
1 picture
1 small bowl of water
1 package of Austrian crystals, 4 millimeter
Ribbon
Extra strength glue
Toothpick or chopstick

Directions: Photocopying the image onto the sheet transfer paper. Cut out the picture and decide where you want it on the handbag. Place the picture in the bowl of water and let it sit for a few minutes. The top layer of the paper will separate from the bottom.

Carefully pick up the top layer (it will have the picture on it) and place it where you want it on the handbag. Let the picture dry on the handbag for 24 hours. Decorate the edge of the picture with red ribbon and let dry. Dip the toothpick or chopstick in the glue and apply it to the back of the crystals and then press them randomly all around the picture. Let dry.

Tips and variations: When applying the picture, remove any air bubbles by running your fingers over them. If desired, add a coat of varnish to seal the picture.
